Queen's Blade: The Exiled Virgin

Apr 1, 2010

Story
Boobs, jiggles and endless groping? Not for me, thanks. It's no secret that ecchi anime aren't my cup of tea – at least, they weren't until I stumbled upon Queen's Blade, a gem of a series that shows all women out there, especially the young and impressionable girls of the next generation, that any lady worth her pound of flesh had better be showing a lot of it. Sure, there are more innuendos and over-the-top naked breasts than you can shake a 'stick' at, but with such strong imagery and admirable moral lessons, I cannot in good conscience overlook this empowering series that will delight... Funny Pets

May 5, 2006

Story
It always irritates me when I watch something that has a misleading title. For example, if "Scary Blood Fest of Evil" ends up being a light school kid comedy about love and relationships, I’ll be a little annoyed. Equally as offensive is something called "Funny Pets" which didn’t up being funny at all. Watching ants crawl all over my foot and bite me a million times would be funnier. Making a delicious ham sandwich, only to have it stolen by rabid boar and devoured would be funnier. Watching rats eat themselves would be funnier. Vomiting all over my pants on a... See full review

Death Note

Nov 23, 2009

Story When it comes to Death Note, the masses have spoken: it's a groundbreaking, gripping tale of deceit and intrigue that will keep you at the edge of your seat from start to end. With one of the highest average ratings on Anime-Planet and a level of hype that treads dangerously close to that of Naruto, Death Note has been deemed a "must-see", a "triumph", and "a series that no anime fan should be without". Except that it’s not. I’m not sure if my perception of reality is fatally flawed or if Death Note’s prominent... See full review

Crystal Triangle

Jan 20, 2005

Story
I've seen bad anime. Baoh and Psychic Wars come to mind as one shot viewings that were so incredibly bad, but were so hilarious at the same time. Think of it like MST3K, but funnier. Ahh, I have fond memories of those two. On the other hand, there are piles of steaming shit such as Wild Cardz and Angelique. Deformed and mutated bastard children such as these have a permanent place on my worst-anime-ever list, and rarely does a new one grace that list's presence. From the depths of hell and good taste, I bring you Crystal Triangle, an anime that proves that even anime creators can be as... See full review

Angelique: Shiroi Tsubasa no Memoire

Nov 6, 2004

Story
What do the following things have in common: eating my leg off with teeth that have been ground down to stumps, shoving ham sandwiches in my nose and mouth until I die of suffocation, and slowly peeling my toenails off with toothpicks? Answer: things I'd rather do than come near Angelique again. From the depths of hell comes Angelique, an OVA that reminds us that there truly is not a god for making us watch something this terrible. I feel ill just writing this review, but I feel it's my civic duty to let you all know what a steaming pile of shit this OVA is, so you can avoid it like the... See full review

Angel's Feather

Jul 9, 2007

Story
Oh lord.In my endless quest to add as many things to the AniRec, I picked up Angel's Feather. Not only is it a short OVA, but it's also shounen-ai - a genre which usually means no one will add it unless I do it myself. I guess there's one silver lining on the cloud: at least it was only two episodes.See, the title "Angel's Feather" is actually incorrect. I have good authority to say that the real title is actually "BOS Feather" (bag of shit feather), as nothing that is good and pure would have such a putrid stench to it. Folks, this is about as generic as it... See full review

Alice

Jan 23, 2008

Story
Some people envision Hell as a torturous place full of fire and brimstone; others envision it as a room filled with nothing but mother-in-laws. Others, like me, think of Hell as an endless span of time when the only activity available is to either stab yourself in the eyes repeatedly, or watch Go Nagai brainstorm "awesome" ideas for new excessively ugly and ecchi anime. After watching Alice I can successfully say "welcome to Hell."Now don't get excited - Alice is not a Go Nagai title; even Go Nagai's artwork is more attractive than this... BARELY. Wild Cardz

Jan 2, 2005

Story
Story? What story? Wild Cardz literally doesn't have one. Not only is there no background as to who the girls are, but even the idea of the current plot is extremely, if not impossibly hard to grasp. By the end of the OVA I wondered "wtf just happened?". Characters are introduced randomly and you still have no idea who they are at the end, the entire "point" of the OVA wasn't explained well and in general the story was just complete garbage. I have literally nothing good to say about the "story", hence an unprecedented score of 0.

Saishuu Shiken Kujira

Apr 14, 2008

Story
Watching Saishuu Shiken Kujira is pretty much like giving yourself the ultimate facepalm - except that your hand is covered in knives which are covered in hydrochloric acid. Following in the footsteps of such gems as Alice and Wild Cardz, SSK easily manages to capture a coveted BOS (bag of... excrement) title and take its place on the wall of suck.Picture, if you will, a whale in the sky. Now picture it with bulging breasts and exposed panties....well ok, maybe the two aren't combined, but those two items pretty much sum up the entirety of SSK. This wacky and clever plot device is... Sword for Truth

Sep 28, 2006

Story
The front cover of Manga Entertainment's Sword for Truth DVD boasts "the best sword fighting action since Ninja Scroll!". Manga execs, I just have two questions for you: what were you smoking, and where can I get some? It's hard to describe the plot of Sword for Truth, since the plot boils down to a trainwreck full of ninjas. I'll try to sum it up in a nutshell: guy who is so-convincingly-badass goes around killing people (why, BECAUSE HE CAN AND HE'S A SAMURAI, duh). Guy then ends up being hired to save a princess. Along the way, guy encounters 57 different groups of ninjas, most of... See full review

Panzer Dragoon

Oct 26, 2004

Story
Oh lord... where to begin. Well, I suppose my task is easy, given the fact that there was essentially NO STORY. I could dictate the history of how this piece of bread ended up on my computer desk longer than I could describe the story of Panzer Dragoon. *Clutches head in pain.* No, seriously folks, this OVA was bad, just bad. The OVA itself is based off of the Sega games, I guess. I haven't played the games so I couldn't tell you which one it's based off of (if any), or if it's just a loose interpretation. In general, we have Kyle and his blind girlfriend Alita who are flying around on a dragon... See full review

Psychic Wars

Nov 23, 2004

Story
*Dies laughing*. Oh dear lord... where to begin. Psychic Wars is easily one of the worst things I've ever seen, and only Baoh rivals it. When I say bad, I don't mean terrible Angelique or Wild Cardz unwatchable bad, I mean hilarious YOU MUST SEE THIS bad, like something you'd see on MST3K, but way funnier.

The "plot" revolves around Ukyo, who somehow gets imbued with some sort of psychic power (that just gives him an outer or inner glow of sorts and lets him punch hard) that's to be used to destroy some demons in the past. Who gives him these powers? Five or six old women who are... See full review

Azumanga Daioh

Nov 21, 2004

Story
Azumanga Daioh is a show about nothing, literally. Think of it like Seinfeld, but with high school girls and more hilarity, and you've got all the bases covered. The episodes revolve around six girls and their daily life at a high school, which always ends up being random in some way.

The comic formula is hilarious, and is almost flawless. Many scenes will make you scratch your head and wonder "eh?" while simultaneously laughing, while other scenes make you laugh by repeating the same thing over and over and over and over, far past the point where you think it should have just... Yumeria

Jul 21, 2006

Story
When I started watching Yumeria, I really had no idea what I was in for. I had heard rumors it was a sci fi series, and others that it was of the ecchi variety. Nevertheless, I decided to just pop it in and see what happened. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed.

Don’t get me wrong, the first few episodes aren’t that bad at all. The series opens with Tomokazu narrating the fact that it’s his birthday. He falls asleep and wakes up in a dream world where pointy robotic creatures of sorts are flying around causing mayhem. Enter Mone, an absolutely obnoxious little girl... See full review

Battle Royal High School

Apr 23, 2009

Story
What do space detectives, burly men in jaguar masks, demons from another world, man-eating fairies and tentacles have to do with each other? That's right - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It should come as no surprise, then, that the farce known as Battle Royal High School is as ridiculous as ridiculous can get, comprised of a mishmash of genres and styles so varied that its creators were clearly playing a game of drunken Mad Libs while in the drawing board phase. The first 10ish or so minutes, I kid you not, play out something like this: 1. Guy in jaguar mask fights other guys not in jaguar masks. 2... See full review

Ergo Proxy

Story
Ahh, Ergo Proxy. You stole my heart like a thief in the night and promised such visions of grandeur that I could hardly wait to see what came next. Why, oh why, must you have disappointed me so? There are so many things wrong with Ergo Proxy that it's hard to begin. First, the parallels between it and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence are eerily uncanny; both have an empty and vacuous excuse of a story, combined with stunning visuals to distract you from the blatant stench. The problem is that while GITS2 was terrible from the get-go, Ergo Proxy begins with a drool-inducing bang that ends up being... See full review

Story
NOTE: though I was careful to avoid spoilers in the synopsis and screenshots, this anime is just too hilarious to not put specifics into the review.  I don't necessarily think the things I'll discuss are spoilers compared to what every other site says about the anime (not to mention you find these things out in the first 10 minutes), but be forewarned if you are particularly sensitive. Picture, if you will, a morose scene set in 1580 where an invincible and powerful warrior lunges at limber ninja and samurai, striking them down when they stand. Six Angels

Jan 8, 2005

Story
After sitting through approximately 90 minutes of episodes (6 in total), I can tell you that I still have no idea what the hell just happened. At first, it woos you with pretty CG images and a decent intro talking about how the world has abolished capital punishment, is basically going down the toilet as far as nuclear waste and threats of war, and how there is a rumor of a fallen angel. Sounds interesting, right? Unfortunately, past that point, the story takes a nosedive and goes down faster than a chihuahua in a cage match with an elephant.

Since nothing is spelled out very well... See full review

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Oct 4, 2004

Story
Story? What story? Although there is a thinly veiled plot that admittedly does have a bit of a twist, Innocence is essentially devoid of ANY sort of plot at all. Let’s face it folks, this movie wasn’t made to challenge your mind or open your horizons to anything. It wasn’t supposed to make you ooh and aah at the character development, or get involved in the storyline; it was made for the visuals, signed, sealed, and delivered. Period. To be honest, I was fairly disappointed with how completely lacking the plot was. In the beginning, you have a faint glimmer of hope that a plot exists... See full review

Elfen Lied

Oct 25, 2004

Story
Violence and nudity lovers unite -- Elfen Lied has been created just for you! Really though, although there is somewhat of a plot to speak of, the main focus of Elfen Lied is the shock value, plain and simple. The somewhat thin plot revolves around the fact that a certain type of people exist that have horns (dubbed Diclonius). These creatures become terribly violent and homocidal, causing those who sit in power to worry. Lucy is one of these creatures who escapes from a maximum security facility (leaving much carnage in her path), and washes up (naked and bloody, no less) on a beach where the... See full review

Megami Paradise

Story
I just need to say that I wish there was some form of mental enema I could take before writing this review. I also wish that I had a small time machine that would allow me to go back in time one hour, and allow me to relive that part of my life, free of Megami Paradise’s cruel torture. That, or the notion that I could perhaps force its creators to eat vomit, since that’s about how bad this excuse for an anime was.
*cough* That being said, I’ll attempt to explain why the "plot" of Megami Paradise was as ridiculous as it was. First of all, there are several words that I think... See full review

Ichigo 100%: Koi ga Hajimaru?! Satsuei Gasshuku - Yureru Kokoro ga Higashi e Nishi e

Apr 9, 2005

Story
Sometimes, I think the creators of certain anime series must be fourteen year old boys with raging hormones. Other times, I think they must be 35 year old virgins. Whatever the case, this theory of mine is seemingly proven with something like Ichigo 100%, which easily falls to new levels of crappiness in the realm of anime.

The story revolves around Junpei, and how many women can possibly not only want him, but show him their panties. Err, wait... that’s not really the story, but it sure as hell seems like the point! The loose "story" is related to Junpei and his gang filming... See full review

Full Metal Alchemist takes place in a world that seems similar to our own, but not as technologically advanced. Trains and steam powered engines are used a great deal, and the science of alchemy is far more prevalent than machines of our time. Kanon

Aug 7, 2005

Story
Kanon is quite possibly the most generic dribble ever to come out of a dating-sim series, as far as the romance goes. It is filled with the most stereotypical characters: an annoying, whiny, yet needy girl, a clutz that sounds like a 5 year old, who also acts like one, the outcast, the girl who is inevitably dying, etc. In addition to the textbook romance type story, the series can't decide what kind of show it is. It ranges from generic romance, to weird supernatural/horrorish (which ends up being LAME and unrealistic), and also a depressing tragedy of sorts related to death. Quite a bit of... See full review

HELLO, FUSHIGI YUUGI RIPOFF! Seriously, if you've seen FY, you'd recognize the similarity just based on the description above. Think of FY without the sappy romance, without whiny Miaka, and in 2 episodes, and you've got Harukanaru. Even though I hated FY, I still think it was better than this. Let's start with the fact that there are gaping plot holes a mile wide, and a story which jumps all over the place. It begins with Asuza and her two friends falling into the well, and then the opening music/scene plays. After, without any explanation, Azusa is wandering around with her companions (who... I'd really like to start out this review with a quirky statement about Hanoka, but I can't; instead, I'll sum up the series in one word: boooooooooring!Hanoka is a twelve-episode series that spans approximately forty minutes in length, with about six total minutes of recap included. The entirety of the story revolves around the rather tired concept of galactic beings who want to destroy the pestilence that is humanity. But wait! Shadow Star Narutaru

Dec 31, 2004

Story
It should be said that regardless of the description, Narutaru has two very distinct sections to it (that aren't really integrated at all, for that matter). The first 7-8 episodes revolve around Shiina and Akira with their dragonets, and the web of destruction and death they are drawn into because of them. Sound dark? IT IS. What's funny is that the first episode makes you think something totally different. I watched episode 1 and remember coming away from it thinking this would be a light series, perhaps slice of life. In the episode, Shiina finds Hoshimaru on the beach, and that's about it... See full review
