I’ll admit it: shoujo normally isn’t my thing. I’m not a big fan of girlish delights and sappy friendships and romances. Give me sci fi or horror any day! Nevertheless, the Candy Candy movie wasn’t in the database yet and it was short, so I decided to watch it anyways. As it turns out, I ended up being fairly surprised at how much I enjoyed it, and how little I disliked it.

Like Stellvia, Candidate for Goddess is a lighthearted look at kids in space, training to fight a deadly disaster. In Stellvia, it was the upcoming shockwave that would destroy Earth. In Candidate for Goddess, it's invading aliens. Nevertheless, this is my favorite type of series by far, and thus, I was definitely disappointed when the end of Candidate for Goddess rolled around.

Candidate for Goddess OVA is essentially a brief recap of the TV series, along with some additional scenes from Ernest and the other Goddess pilots' pasts. Plenty of introspective thought can be found (similar to Evangelion TV 25/26), and in general the entire thing is seen through the eyes of Ernest.

First of all, if you haven't seen the TV series, you have no reason to be watching this. Even if you have seen the TV series, I think you'll find that watching the OVA isn't very fulfilling either. I've seen bad anime. Baoh and Psychic Wars come to mind as one shot viewings that were so incredibly bad, but were so hilarious at the same time. Think of it like MST3K, but funnier. Ahh, I have fond memories of those two. On the other hand, there are piles of steaming shit such as Wild Cardz and Angelique. Sound a bit generic? Perhaps it is. But although the "boy transported to another world of fantasy" idea might be overdone, it doesn't stop from being an enjoyable watch. There are so many series that came to mind while watching this, including Escaflowne, El Hazard Alternative World, and more. But the main thing I thought of was Final Fantasy 3, or the plot of ANY Final Fantasy. Definitely had a video game type feel, even if it didn't mean to. Or perhaps the combination of fantasy and technology just sparked that idea in my head, who knows?

Cat Soup is a bizarre and abstract look at the lives of two young kittens, as they peruse the land of the dead. Then again, knowing that information is hard to discern from watching it once, and odds are, had you not read any review or description, you may have not picked up that fact at all. There is no dialogue in Cat Soup, except random noises used for the characters talking with occasional subtitles (in Japanese characters). First, it should be known that this OVA is 30 minutes for the first two parts, and 50 minutes for the last part.

Cleopatra DC follows the pattern of other short OVAs of this type, where each episode deals with the same characters, but a different storyline, sort of like watching any syndicated TV show.
