Mei and the Baby Cat Bus

Jun 27, 2011

For all of you reading this wondering how you can watch it as well, I have some bad news - this movie is a short film shown only at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan. When you visit the museum, they give you a pass to see whatever short film is playing on that day, and the films rotate every few months. I happened to see this movie not once, but twice, the two times I visited the museum (YEARS apart). I wish I had seen another film the second time I visited, but that being said, it's a truly fantastic movie. In the fantastical tale, Mei meets up with a baby Catbus that she can actually fit in, and the... See full review

Muramasa

May 11, 2008

Story
Osamu Tezuka's short film Muramasa seems like nothing special at first glance. The animation is overly simplistic and grainy, the audio is a bit underwhelming, and the premise seems ordinary; however, the outstanding twist that follows makes Muramasa an absolute must-see.At only nine minutes in length, it's nearly impossible to go into details when discussing Muramasa's story. Let's just say it involves a samurai, a sword, lots of straw men, and a kickass conclusion. Once you finally have an idea of what's going on, you can't help but grin - and that's an... Murder

Apr 20, 2008

Story
An entertaining parody at heart, Murder shows us a murder scene which is solved in a variety of different ways by a variety of different people. The only recurring sequence is the beginning of each scene, in which a woman opens a door, sees a dead body, and screams. What happens afterwards is anyone's game! Though short in length, Murder is a treat to watch. Each segment is cute on its own but as a whole, they form a whole that is amusing at the very least. From vampires to James Bond, plot elements help paint a unique picture that will appeal to a variety of fans. There isn't much else... See full review

Mahoujin Guru Guru Movie

Jan 24, 2008

Story
Hello, my name is sothis, and I'm a console RPGaholic - my addiction began with Dragon Warrior 1 at the age of eight, and it went downhill from there. Fellow addicts, rejoice! The 8-bit parody franchise Mahoujin Guru Guru is here to provide you a fix.Mahoujin Guru Guru, in general, follows two young heroes as they embark on a quest to thwart the ultimate evil; and much like an old 8-bit classic, the story isn't terribly important or complex. Instead, the franchise aims at poking fun at all elements of old RPGs, including black box information screens, hit point displays, midi-style... See full review

Moonlight Mile

Dec 31, 2007

Story
Moonlight Mile, at first glance, appears to be a ripoff of the realistic slice-of-life space drama Planetes; but at its core, it's much more. At first, Moonlight Mile is reminiscent of Twin Spica - two men have a lofty aspiration of becoming astronauts, in an era when mankind is finally looking to extend its reach into space. As the series goes on, we follow both Goro and Lostman as they become astronauts and hone their skills. However, about one third of the way through the twelve episodes, the tone changes - instead of being akin to Twin Spica, Moonlight Mile's tone is closer to Wings... See full review

Minky Momo in Tabidachi no Eki

Sep 3, 2007

Story
Minky Momo in Tabidachi no Eki opens in an almost cinematic fashion, showing us a speeding train on a rain-soaked evening traveling towards its usual destinations. Aboard the train is the pink-haired and kind-hearted Momo, who has a brief conversation with an old man who is trying to reunite with someone after fifty long years. At the station, Momo discovers that the man has left his passport on the train and thus embarks to find him. Along the way she runs across her parallel self and a young and troubled girl who is tied to the station, and needs help of each Momo. The tone of the OVA is... See full review

Mahou Gakuen Lunar! Aoi Ryuu no Himitsu

Jul 23, 2006

Story
Clocking in at around eight minutes, Magic School Lunar definitely isn’t the easiest thing to write a full review about. The "story", if that’s what you want to call it, involves two villains who have kidnapped the students of Magic School. They want the power of the Blue Dragon in exchange for their lives, but there’s a catch: the dean of the school has absolutely no idea what the Blue Dragon is! Like any good headmaster, he then rounds up three stragglers and sends them off to save the day, much to their dismay. Though they do head towards the castle and ultimately battle the bad guys... Mask Of Zeguy

Aug 8, 2005

Story
Now, before those of you who have seen this already scoff at what might be a high score for the story section, hear me out. Although poorly executed, Mask of Zeguy has one of the more unique plots I’ve seen in a series, and definitely is an odd mix of technologies and times.

In Mask of Zeguy, a legendary mask (guess what it’s named??) which supposedly gives its wielder great power (and can open a huge gate that controls nature or something like that) has been kept safe through history due to people called the Time Warriors. They travel through time, keeping it safe from... See full review

Mirage of Blaze

Aug 7, 2005

Story
I have mixed feelings about the plot of Mirage of Blaze. As far as originality, two thumbs up. I have never seen a series or movie that deals with reincarnated souls who exorcise warlords of the past, who still battle in the present for territory. In addition, the whole thing is done under a very dark mood and atmosphere.

However, the plot isn't consistent. At first you think the plot is based around one warlord that wants power... and several episodes are based on the person. Then suddenly, the focus changes to a whole different plotline, which doesn't work well for a series of... See full review

My Beautiful Girl Mari

Aug 6, 2005

Story
Rather than starting out this review telling details of the plot, I feel it would be more appropriate to discuss the type of anime this is. First of all, My Beautiful Girl Mari is Korean, not Japanese. This influences both the animation style and the music, though the story itself could have been something you’d see in a Japanese anime. The most important thing to understand about the story is that it’s a mix of two things: slow slice of life, and mystical fantasy-based wonder. Think of it like Totoro, but more moody and silent and less aimed at children.

As far as plot... See full review

My-Hime

Apr 15, 2005

Story
I’ve been putting off this review for a few days now, because I haven’t been able to think of a good place to start. Normally I’d start out the story section with a longer version of the synopsis listed above, but it’s hard to do so without spoiling the twists and turns of Mai HiME. Thus, I’ll have to go about things a little differently this time... Mai HiME starts out feeling like a typical (though darker) magical girl type series. We are introduced to a variety of characters who all attend (or will start to attend) the same prestigious academy. Some of these... See full review

Miyuki-chan in Wonderland

Apr 2, 2005

Story
Think you’ve seen Alice in Wonderland? Guess again. From the mind of Clamp comes this very ecchi and very... interesting look at the classic tale – but it’s definitely not like you’ll remember it. In this world, pretty much every object or creature has been replaced by a buxom and enticing female, each of whom desires Miyuki -- our protagonist -- in some way. The Cheshire Cat is a sultry cat girl who wants to do naughty things to Miyuki, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum are two dark haired beauties who want to fight her, the tea drinking party of femmes want to molest her, and the Queen... Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Mar 20, 2005

Story
When I first turned on Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, I was expecting a boring and generic magical girl type series that might just put me to sleep. Luckily for me, I was very wrong. Our tale begins with Nanoha, a young girl who attends school and lives with her family (who include characters from Triangle Heart: Miyuki and Kyoya). One day near the woods, she runs across a ferret that is injured, but much to her dismay, this is no ordinary ferret! His name is Yuuno and he hails from another world, and he needs Nanoha’s help. Powerful stones called Jewel Seeds are loose within the planet, and... See full review

Mighty Space Miners

Dec 31, 2004

Story
The tale of Mighty Space Miners revolves around exactly what you'd think it would: space miners. In the future, these folks live up in space on an asteroid, divert comets and meteors and then mine them for precious metals and such. They then send the spoils to Earth, and continue to work. In addition, scientists are studying the effects being born in space can have on children. Our protagonist, Ushiwaka Nanbu, is the only surviving child in space, still. He's 12 years old.

The crew are getting ready to capture Halley's comet, when a military nuclear missile threatens the base, and... See full review

Magic Knight Rayearth OVA

Nov 25, 2004

Story
Hikaru, Fu, and Umi are three young women (and best friends) who are about to part ways now that school is ending. They live in Tokyo, a place where sinister things are soon to happen -- at least, if the long-dead kingdom of Cephiro and the villainous Eagle have anything to say about it. Invading their world with a fortress and powerful spirit beasts, these trespassers want nothing more than to destroy the Earth, all to satisfy one spirit, Emerald's one wish. And thus, the trio find themselves endowed with the Ovum, strange jewels that allow them to call upon guardian spirits, and even... See full review

Moekan

Nov 6, 2004

Story
When I decided to watch Moekan, I really had no idea what it was about, except that it was another H/Dating-sim game transition to anime. I skipped through one of the episodes quickly, and noticed that it contained (OH JOY) many maids, and I immediately was apprehensive. Once I watched the first episode, though, I had hopes that perhaps this would be more unusual than I thought. Well, I was right about that, but it didn't really end up being a good thing.

The overall problem is that the storyline is extremely convoluted, and you never really know what the focus is on. The narrator... See full review

Marco

Oct 3, 2004

Story
The tale of a young man named Marco began when his mother left for Argentina from Italy . This is never really explained in the movie, but after reading other websites and reviews for the related "3,000 Leagues in Search of Mother", I came to understand that Italy went through a depression and its inhabitants often immigrated to other countries to support their families. That being said, Marco’s mother did this as well, leaving a very sad little boy behind. After he fails to receive a usual letter from her, he decides to set off on his own to find her, and that’s a very long distance... See full review

Marriage

Sep 25, 2004

Story
Remember after school specials? Yeah, you know the ones... where Becky huffed gasoline and had to go to the hospital, or James smoked pot and ended up behind bars. The message? Don’t do drugs! These public service announcements full of government propaganda were on TV all the time, feeding the minds of youngsters. And now, folks, I am proud to announce a public service announcement from the Japanese government: GET MARRIED, NOW! Missed it on TV? That’s ok, you can always go rent "Marriage", a 2 part OVA, to hear this message loud and clear from the comfort of your own home! But wait... See full review

Megami Paradise

Sep 6, 2004

Story
I just need to say that I wish there was some form of mental enema I could take before writing this review. I also wish that I had a small time machine that would allow me to go back in time one hour, and allow me to relive that part of my life, free of Megami Paradise’s cruel torture. That, or the notion that I could perhaps force its creators to eat vomit, since that’s about how bad this excuse for an anime was.
*cough* That being said, I’ll attempt to explain why the "plot" of Megami Paradise was as ridiculous as it was. First of all, there are several words that I think... See full review
