Ahh...Final Fantasy. XIII really left a bad taste in my mouth for sure. I still enjoyed it though, for the most part. It was like Square-enix tacked FF to the name to a vaguely familiar product hoping it would sell. It didn't work with The Soirits Within movie but it still sold anyway. At least I still have Dragon Quest. The series that refuses to change and has my undying love because of it.
yes i'm aware, having played console rpgs since dragon quest 1 on the nes when i was like 6 ;)
I played 8 hours, I was. ..almost interested in the story, but after I quit playing the one day I played, I could never bring myself to play it again, not once, your complaints being the major reasons.
I disliked FF XII because it was pretentious, annoying, and ditched my beloved comabt system entirely. . .but it wasn't a bad game in-of-itself, I even finished it.
But XIII. . . was the death of Final Fantasy. Awell, it had a good run as a series, and I still have all my old games.
BTW: You do realise there's been more like 30 FF games though right? :P. And XIII was the only one I see no reason for -anyone- to like.
Hehe, everything you said is so true. I know it's been, what, 4 months since this post was made, but I'd still like to say I agree (if it means anything). As you said, the game was waaaaaaay too linear. I remember games such as Persona 3 and Nocturne that gave off that feeling of being big and free, that you could go around and find stuff in every nook and cranny, and even if Persona 3 took place in one town, I still had fun exploring. This generation of consoles has been lacking on the JRPG side, I have to say.
On another note, if you end up reading this, are you a PS3 player by any chance?
If so, "Atelier Rorona" is coming out sometime around September/November of 2010, in case you haven't heard. Here's the trailer, if ever you're interested:
(Sorry I can't find the english trailer, but the Japanese one should still show off what the game is about.)
The first half was a bit repetitive though.
