While Tylor and Patlabor are vastly different in terms of setting, they are similar in that they're both about "Misfits/ Losers who Save the Day". Both shows have a lighthearted approach to storytelling, though Tylor is more outright comedic compared to Patlabor.

Full Metal Panic!

FMP and FMA, while completely different in terms of story and setting, are both excellent "paired" shows as they are both, for lack of a better term, "balanced" shows. They are both a well-paced blend of comedy, action and drama. Both shows also manage to have well-developed characters-not only the protagonists, but also the "side" characters.

LotGH and the CotS series are both Science Fiction anime of the Space Epic variant. You have your sprawling intergalactic empires, massive space fleets, equally massive space battles and a storytelling scope that is truly, well, *epic* in both these shows.

Planetes

Patlabor and Planetes both fall into similar categories. They're both "mundane" SF shows (the tech development is realistic-no aliens/outright breaking the laws of physics here). Both shows are more concerned with the characters, and how those characters react to potential technological developments than with the tech developments themselves. They both deal with realistic poilitical/ social issues (terrorism, inequality) in a serious manner. They're both clearly intended for fans of serious SF.
