Squid Girl

Dec 26, 2010

Plot: A squid girl shows up to invade Earth in retaliation for the environmental damage done to the ocean by humans. Unfortunately for her this is comedy so instead of squid loli domination, her invasion attempts only end in funny failures. There isn't much else to the story, aside from the unique main characte this is a by the numbers slice of life comedy.   Animation: As expected of a 2010 anime, Shinryaku's animation is very bright and colourful but like the plot its just decent but nothing special.   Sound: OP and ED were mediocre while the background music fit the scene without being... Bakemonogatari

Dec 23, 2010

Plot: Bakemonogatari is based on Koyomi Araragi (Arararagi if you tend to stutter names) a part vampire, part pedophile high school senior. Ever since he was saved by a local badass surfer priest/exorcist, he's been getting involved with more and more monsters (the shows title meaning “A Monster Story”). These encounters are split into well defined arcs headlined by a girl who may or may not love him making this show maybe or maybe not a harem-y show. Now before you think of every bad cliched shounen ecchi rom-com this isn't that type of show. Each of the arcs has a dark tone dealing with... See full review

Hayate the Combat Butler! Heaven is a Place on Earth

Dec 28, 2011

I told my I wouldn’t write any rant reviews but you know what, Fuck you Hayate Movie.

Plot

The story is about par for the course for a moderately serious arc of shounen romantic comedy. And thats the problem. Hayate TV was a pure lulz fest while this movie had a few gags and iPhone name dropping but thats it. There was no narrator, no fourth wall breaking at all (!), only Nagi and her friend seemed to be remotely remember what the original was like. Normally it’d be a medicore “you know whats going to happen the whole time” kinda story but cause it undermines the basic... See full review

Angel Beats!

Apr 25, 2012

How I watched it: As it came out subbed (720p), dubbed on Blu-ray (1080i) Story: Angel Beats is one of those series that was a blast to watch (mostly) but tried to do to much in too little time. It wants to be a comedy, action, drama, romance and even throw in some parody and music elements for good measure. It does them individually well except it doesn't have the time to develop them properly except for the comedic elements. The whole show has a rushed vibe to it and the serious moments feel out of place because of it as it brings the show to a sudden melodramatic halt, sometimes out of nowhere... See full review

Excel Saga

Apr 21, 2011

Plot: Excel Saga is a show built on near-episodic parody of a specific anime genre or trope, with crazy offbeat side continuous side stories (like the plight of Pedro or ACROSS's plan to conquer the city), loosely tying them together. While the formula sounds hit or miss, vast majority of Excel's episode are diversified in its insanity to kept you entertained throughout. Oh and I hope you don't like 4th walls, they don't exist. No literally it doesn't exist. Nabeshin is literally the director of the show (Shinichi Watanabe) and the characters often refer to past events by first stating what episode it was...
