Medaka Box is in a way Studio GAINAX trying to get a piece of the pie out of the Suzumiya Haruhi fandom that Kyoto Animation created 6 years ago. It is based on a manga by the all-famous Nishio Ishin (maker of high sellers, such as the Bakemonogatari franchise, xxxHolic, and Katanagatari) and directed by… Ok, his name is not important; he only makes mediocre ecchi anime.
The premise is about a school president messing with issues the students may have in their lives in an attempt to make everything more exciting. Yeah, it is the Haruhi premise all right… only difference it has far more ecchi instead of moe and the production values are hardly as great. Not to mention how the characters feel like nothing but pale imitations of those in Bakemonogatari. But it’s not like we can blame the author for losing his touch; truth is that Medaka box was made BEFORE Bakemonogatari and looks more like a rough blueprint for it. Furthermore the source material is a manga and not a novel, so it does not allow the same space for complicating dialogues and mostly focuses on images with small dialogue balloons. So guess what someone like Nishio filled the images with. That’s right; goofy humor and fan service.
So anyways, the plot is about this slutty-looking schoolgirl managing to become the school president by … looking all slutty, and decides to help the students in any possible problem they may have. For that reason she forces her boy toy tsundere-target practice childhood friend to be next to her. What for? Just to troll him every five minutes with sex jokes, as she breezes through the school’s problems by acting so hot and sexy, people simply do her biding… Or she gets super violent if they are not. And the teachers as usually don’t mind.
… Wait, do they even exist in this show? …
Anyways, she acts like she can accomplish anything she feels like it right away (and does so far since she has God-level powers) so there isn’t much of a conflict to care about and she thus becomes way too obnoxious and shamelessly sperm-bucket-like fast enough to lose all respect about her. And seriously, her boy-toy co-protagonist is completely useless to the plot since he can’t do anything right, while she can do anything.
Plus, the production values are as I said hardly good for their time. GAINAX used to be top brass but the last years it’s wasting its resources on complete trash shows. They only used their traditional bouncing boobs gimmick and left everything else to look like a run-of-the-mill ecchi comedy. Nothing remotely close to the era they were making highly fluent and controversial anime like FCLC and not even artistic as what SHAFT did with Bakemonogatari. I guess the economic crisis forced even them to go for cheap shows and easy money while pouring everything on the Evangelion movies.
In all, this anime attempted to have an over-the-top perfect lead heroine, a tsundere Mary Sue who can get away with anything and solve any sort of problem before doing sexy stuff for the sake of making them. It didn’t work because the humor is not that good, there is not much of a plot or a conflict, and the bold ecchi lost its appeal years ago. So no, it’s a complete flop of a show and something I do not recommend to anyone.
And now for some excused scorings.
