Attack on Titan

emmandemm94's avatar By on Sep 9, 2016

I watched Attack on Titan all in one go over a Thanksgiving Break where I was completely alone in the dorms, so my response may be skewed by that fact that I lived on almonds for a few days while watching an anime about humanoids eating humans... Story -  The premise of this anime is where the originality begins and ends. The story was the same stereotypical "special boy" arc that is so popular in action animes. Animation -  The animation 100% carries this anime. The action scenes are awesome, the titans grotesque. If all you're looking for is pretty action sequences you will be... See full review

Itsudatte My Santa!

Thrawn's avatar By on Sep 9, 2016

Story: First off, who names their kid Santa? If you're born on St. Paddies day, are you named Patrick? Or on New Years Eve, are you named Eve? No! That's because that kind of shit would get your ass kicked daily. And your parents hate you, which is why this poor bastard is named Santa. But Santa, he's a loser. Loser things happen to him and then in a span of 30 seconds from the end of his monologue, give or take a few seconds, he meets Santa Santa. You know, the Santa chick. So Santa and Santa get into all kinds of hijinks that have no sense of timing, pacing or any real connection/cohesion that would make... See full review

Berserk (2016)

emmandemm94's avatar By on Sep 9, 2016

Dropped after ep. 3 Story -  I never read the manga, but based on the anime (including the Golden Age Arc movies) I would say that the only satisfying way to consume this story is through the manga. The world is too complex to be sufficiently covered by the time/money budgeted for it. There are gaping plot holes, jumps in dialogue and storylines, and if you didn't watch the movies or know the premise then you would be too confused to keep up at all (I had to look up Apostles because that's how crappy the jumps and backstory are). Animation - The only reason I wouldn't rate the animation 1/10 is for... See full review

Kimi no Na wa.

Hinaswan's avatar By on Sep 9, 2016

I really loved this movie. At first I was just like 'oh it's in the top fifty. Why not?'... Best random decision this past month. It had beautiful animation, the theme songs were wonderful and it mixed up many moments - it was comical, touching, intriguing and at some moments made you cry, and it was worth every second. Watch it; you won't regret the decision.

Toradora!

sunnysuraj's avatar By on Sep 9, 2016

MY VERDICT IS: WORTH THE WATCH Something about Toradora felt good to me, despite the fact that I can't really pick out any parts of it that are unique. It has a bunch of common tropes -- the oblivious main character, the energetic one, the silly mother, the otherwise-nondescript "best friend," the mean but somehow mature one, and of course the tsundere. So, a lot of really common characters. But somehow, it felt like they tried to take those characters and expand on them beyond their tropes. There were moments where characters broke from their predictable behavior and fleshed out their... See full review

This movie reminds one heavily of a few other films with very similar themes such as "Lake House" (2006), "Sliding Doors" (1998), "Somewhere in Time" (1980), "Frequency" (2000), "Time After Time" (1979), "Retroactive" (1997) and well quite a few more, but those are just a few I can name right off the bat.  All these movies involve very similar stories and themes, aka time travel, communication to past events, and preventing some sort of disaster.  So the theme is not all that new for this anime movie nor per say is the story generically... Will contain some spoilers. Story The story revolves around two characters who suddenly start switching bodies with each other, and have to live each others lifes. Even though I have previously watched movies about people switching bodies, this one felt different. It starts like your typical film, but then it turns for the better. I would have liked if they would have explanined why exactly the whole 'switching bodies' was happening, and why it was those two characters who were having these experiences. Was it simply because they were meant to be together, or maybe because they had to save the... See full review

Another "DVD Special" that is really just a normal episode, but there might be some method to their madness of why. Story - 7/10 So the reason I think this episode, along with the Shipboard Shoot's Conclusion, are DVD only episodes is due to their subject matter. So far throughout the series the episode have been more on the lighter side, with most episodes being about the gang stopping another spy organization or just a little fun filler episode. On the other hand this episode, and the Episode Zero Prologue, both deal with  human trafficking operations in China, a subject they might... See full review

GreatCrippler's avatar By on Sep 8, 2016

This has become a new one I reccomend to people who like the SAO, and Log Horizon type animes. It's not overly deep, and frankly it's a silly little story. That said, I was hooked from beginning to end, and it felt like a complete arc which is rarer than I'd like in a lot of anime. If I get another season, great. If not, it stands well on its own. I enjoy a good love story, and this mostly qualifies.

This offering is a big improvement over the first of a trio of Project Itoh adaptations to be released. Unlike Empire of Corpses (during which I fell asleep on three separate occasions), this movie only made me kind of drowsy. It has all the characteristic philosophcal musing against a dystopian sci-fi backdrop that you would expect given the source material, but the conflicts and character motives driving the plot here are much easier to wrap your head around. The biggest hurdle is the animation.  The jerky, CG style art and animation are a constant distraction, which make it hard to focus on the... See full review

I don't recall Frieza getting training from a God. I don't recall grunts being stronger than super saiyans. Last time I checked Piccolo is stronger than a base super saiyan and he got beat. I didn't think anything could be worse than the Nozoki Ana anime adaptation. It turns out, I was right. This spin-off story succeeds precisely to the extent that it never tries to take seriously its source material.  The characters are deliberately shallow, the story is transported into the familiar (cliched) world of clumsy, sexually naive high school students, and the blackmail/exhibition that are the central feature of the manga are glimpsed at the start of each episode but then basically disappear. That's not to say this is a good anime. It's not.  But it is digestible at only three episodes... See full review

So I watched this series in its entirety in the last couple of days both in Japanese and English (an experiment I'm doing to get a true understanding of what the anime was supposed to be and what it turned into once translations were added).  Voice Acting: The voice acting was really good on both ends! I actually preferred the english adaptation to the Japanese, although Karama's voice was questionable. I wish they had at least hired somebody for the singing parts because the dude who voiced Karama was pretty subpar for a character whose supposed to be a pop star. Karama is the only one I have an... Sakura Trick

interregnum's avatar By on Sep 7, 2016

Sakura Trick is built around two high school girls kissing each other. Like, almost exclusively. It, um…it would not have been my first choice. Narratively. But that’s what they went with. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, the kissing is what really works about this show. Every kiss looks and feels…real: the anticipation, the rush of adrenaline, the warmth, the thrill, the little despair at stopping—and, yes, even the pressing together of lips. And it’s hard not to get caught up in those moments, to fall just a little bit in love with each stolen kiss. But kissing... See full review

Some Spoilers Ensue: I adore sad anime. Most that are considered sad, however, don't really make me sad. They are just depressing and usually boring. This one though, this was sad. Extremely sad. I wouldn't dare put it in the same league as Clannad, but I cried on and off for most of the second half of the anime. You know what's coming pretty much the entirety of the show, yet, somehow, it still hurt so much when it happened. Anime like this one make me question people. I genuinely dont understand why this anime is so widely beloved among most common viewers. Have people never seen at least one shoujo anime before? Ok for starters, lets talk about the story. Its fucking boring. Nothing really happens in this show, its really just a circlejerk about saving edgy teen bishounen number 10,872 from his imminent suicide. Seiyuu's Life!

Valdius's avatar By on Sep 6, 2016

An exceptionally strong anime overall. The story follows a trio of Japanese voice actresses attempting to break into the industry, and shows a utterly fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse of how that industry works. Strong characters that you can relate to and feel for, high quality animation, and suitably brilliant voice work leave this as a seriously compelling story. In truth, my only complaint is that there isn't more of it...much much more.

You get the idea. The characters, voice acting, animation and world are excellent. This lends a solid start to the series. But, by the time you make it halfway through you're confused where it is going. By the time you reach 2/3rds you are desperately hoping that somehow it will all make sense if you finish it. The poster for this OVA made me think I was getting another beach episode. What I instead got was a stupid idol episode involving fan favorite character Kokoro. With her friends support she becomes super popular, only to find that she would rather be battling Arsene and not singing generic J-pop to horny fanboys. Milky Holmes looks like an anime from the early to mid '00s, feels like an anime of the period, and kinda falls into that weird category Magical Pokan did where it's a seemingly kid friendly anime from the outside with a strange sense of humor and sexuality that makes it hard to gauge exactly who the anime is for. Is it for kids who love erect nipples or older teens who love erect penises? There isn't much to this movie. There is no strong theme or conflict. It's the embodiment of the genre, a litteral random slice out of someones life.  The main character is a 13 year old high school student and ice skater. Most of the scenes and issues are about ice skating or her mother who passed away years ago.  I never felt like I got a good sense of most of the characters or felt like there was any point to this story. It wasn't exactly boring, but I spent most of it waiting for something to happen or for the point of the story to be realized. Before I knew it, there were only four minutes... See full review

After a burning wreck of a first season, Battle in Egypt (tentatively shortened BE) follows the same pitfalls and mistakes until, that is, around episode 40. But I'll come back to that. BE continues where the last season of Stardust Crusaders ended and in traditional Stardust fashion, has a heap of monster-of-the-month type enemies awaiting Jotaro and companions. From the fluidity of Battle Tendency, this method of throwing random enemies into the show served only as filler to the final confrontation with Dio. It got a fairly high rating so I wanted to watch it.  it immediate grabs your attention with how unique it is, in that they say and do outrageous and sexual things.  The story seems goofy due to this, but there is actually a very serious underlying tone of "we are fighting a war against a utopian and oppressive society".

Death Note is not the kind of anime that you will find every day.  It gives itself time to fully develop the characters of the series (Most of which, let's be honest, cause some serious fangirling).  The plot is well thought out, intriguing, and over all, intelligent. It can be easily said that Death Note is one of the greatest animes of all time (And my own personal favorite).   The only down side to the series is the killing off of a major charcter (my favorite, as a matter of fact).  Be warned if you're the serious fangirl/fanboy type--This scene will bring on the tears.

So I went into this 1 hour film blind, without having read any reviews and just briefly skimming the synopsis. Just as a warning to anyone wanting to watch this before I start: this anime is really hard to review without any spoilers! I am not usually a huge fan of android romance themes but I thought I would give it a shot. So without further ado - here are my thoughts: First thing that deserves a mention is that this anime is simply beautiful. The animation is superb and the soundtrack is spot on for the plot. I really can not fault either aspect of the anime. It's seriously gorgeous.  ... See full review

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

Boring overall. The theme of a different style of zombies and some steampunk seemed promising at first. There was a good amount of action but something was missing. In this case it was the characters and the lack of any of them standing out or being memorable. This has to be one of the most boring set of cast members I have seen in an anime. They were bland, there was no connection with them, just puppets to the storyline. This fact could have been forgivable because the action was great, but then halfway through everything shifts heavily away from the zombies concept to a far less interesting one. This is... Food Wars!, or Shokugeki no Soma is a Japanese shounen manga series, which was written by Yuuto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. Due to big success, the manga received an anime adaptation by J.C.Staff, which aired between April 3, 2015 and September 25, 2015 and a second season, which began airing on July 2, 2016. The anime tells the story of a boy named Souma Yukihira, who has a dream to become an owner of his father's restaurant and to surpass his father as a chef. Under the Dog

jypsyjulia's avatar By on Sep 4, 2016

What is there to say about this anime - a story that was meshed into one thirty-minute OVA... It left a lot of questions unanswered.   The entire plot was slightly confusing.  There was very little explanation for why these assassin groups were doing what they were doing... and yet... I liked it.  I liked it a lot, actually.  I can't explain why.  I don't even know if I could sum up the plotline for you in a cohesive way, but I'm going to try: Basically, Under the Dog follows the tale (and I'm using follow here loosely because there actually was an issue with the narration) of... My boyfriend has a genre that he idenitfies as "cute girls doing cute things." If that really is a thing other than in our liitle world, then this show could be best described as cute girls doing cute things poorly. I'll admit that it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I really loved it. The OP and ED are good, the characters are likeable, the animation is okay. The plot could do with some work, but if you're looking for a feel-good show to watch when you're in a slump, this is it.

A Letter to Momo

As someone that grew up on Ghibli, I can be slightly judgemental about animated films. However, I browsed about, saw a description of Momo, and thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed. There are very few things that I go out of my way to buy on DVD and this is one of them. I love the animation style, I love the little quirks of the characters, and I love the story behind this. It strikes a great balance between drama and comedy, in a way similar to Wolf Children, and I think it deserves credit for that. One of my favorites.

Chitose Get You!!

NicoCake's avatar By on Sep 4, 2016

Chitose Get You is an OVA anime with 26 episodes running 3 minutes each. In all the entire anime is 78 minutes ( 1 hour and 18 minutes ). I am sure it will be worth your time. Without further ado let's get started!!  ~ Story ~   The story was...okay. It wasn't anything special, but it wasn't terribly bad. The main storyline in a nutshell is " A little girl has a crush on an older man, and it causes lots of hilarious conflict between the little girl and her homeroom teacher ". So I think the story deserves a 5, since it was pretty creative. 5/10 ~ Animation ~  The... See full review

Brynhildr in the Darkness

andreichekov's avatar By on Sep 4, 2016

Don't watch this, watch Elfen Lied. I started this show with high hopes. I love the premise of it, and it looks cool. The producers and director and stuff have a history of making good things, but they really failed with this one. Brynhildr is just Elfen Lied 2.0, but it misses so many of the things that made me enjoy Elfen Lied. They both have the girls that are horribly totorued in a lab, but there is no background for why we should care about any of them. The characters are not believable, they are all so simple that I honestly can't think of a single character trait of any of them. There is a bad... See full review

Bokura ga Ita

For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Link on my profile page. This is a review of both the anime and the manga of Bokura ga Ita. You might have noticed that this is going to be a bit off a special review since after I’m done reviewing the anime, I’m also going to give you my thoughts about the manga of BgI. Now why I “break” my rule of being an anime only reviewer will come at the end of the review. Positive *So the first thing that I liked about this anime was the fact that we get multiple love characters. I always find it to be a positive thing when romance... See full review
