Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen

on

Aregevollen starts out pretty hectic then takes turns at going a slow pace and a fast pace but ends on a snooze note.  The attempts at foreshadowing would have lead any competent viewer to anticipate a much more rewarding and dramatic ending that never came.  I suppose we are lead to believe one of the main villains dies in the end but this is never exaclty affirmed and the way his end came was closer to an Ed Wood movie ending or maybe one of the more boring lifetime movie endings.  Most the characters never wear anything different not that that is uncommon but when even civillian characters... Hidan no Aria AA

on

THIS IS NOT A SEQUEL. And that would be part of the problem. The title and even some of the characters make it appear as a sequel. After all, if it's the same title and just double one of the letters at the end (AA) then normally it would be safe to assume it's number 2. Instead, it's a different story. Forget everything you saw in Hidan no Aria A. This anime shares some similar character names and looks and a few aspects of the setting, but that's it. The characters that reappear in this anime don't have the same personalities as in the other one. There is a lot of yuri. There is less action. Characters... See full review

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

on

Ah, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai...what can I write about this series that has not already been written? Most certainly nothing. How much of what I feel about this series can I actually express properly? Probably just a tiny bit. But I still feel the need to write something about this anime that captivated me so much... So, let's give it a try! Even though I think this is gonna be too long for anyone to read and yet too weak to satisfy me.  STORY & CHARACTERS Despite what some people say about Kai being worse than its prequel, I'll have to agree with the rest that Kai does an excellent... Un-Go episode:0 Inga-ron

on

I've said pretty much everything in my review of Un-Go. It is rare to find an addition to a series that is not only a prequal but also brings down the entire series. This episode manages it amazingly well. Other than that it is pretty good as it answers some questions about Yuuki and Inga. I just wish that they hadn't used Bettenou for it.

Well, I was really not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I mean, have you read the synopsis? (If you haven't, I highly reccomend you do. It's usually the sensible thing to do before reading any reviews) It hardly seems like it would be good. And yet here I am giving it a 9/10. Obviously it did something right. Story-wise, I'm sure you already know the basic plot (If not, I refer back to my previous suggestion) To be honest, other than that, there is not a huge amount plot wise. There's certainly bits here and there but the main focus is on the characters and their relationships. All of... See full review

Shelter

on

It took me a while to get around to watching Shelter, but in the end i'm glad that I did. The animation is of a standard quality for this period of shows, but the story behind it is much deeper than I would have thought possible for such a short animation. Though it does hit recurring themes in anime stories, I enjoyed the way teh story played to the beat, or vice versa. This is overall a very interesting story, and one I think can be enjoyed many times by the viewer, though that orginal feeling will not always show its face.

Valkyrie Drive -Mermaid-

on

"In a world where five artificial islands exists, Mamori is a "mermaid" transferred to one of those islands. When Mamori is attacked, a newly transferred girl named Mirei saves her. The enemy doesn't stop, however, and the two are soon cornered. Just when they think all hope is lost, Mirei kisses Mamori, and Mamori turns into a sword. Mirei then wields the sword and launches a counterattack against their enemies." This is basically the plot. What do you think? Is it interesting? Well, yeah, it is imho, or at least it was. Un-Go

Right, it's confession time for me. If you have been reading my reviews than you may have noticed that I tend to rip the anime a new one. There is a reason for this though and it has to do with the fact that I can't turn my brain off when watching anime. I can't ignore the stupid shown in the anime and this is a problem as most anime are very stupid indeed. In this case I'm not talking about a 90 pound girl catching a multi-ton cruise missile and throwing it back. Yes, it is stupid but it is a stupid that I'll allow. It's anime. Things like this are normal here and I'm pretty much fine with it. It annoys... See full review

Initial D Final Stage

on

As the final stage commenses, and the curtain fall i feel complete. I've watched alot of animes, and there ain't many who does the endings well, some leave you hanging and questioning. But this.. this is splendid. After watching everything from season 1 to this, you won't be dissapointed that's for sure. Action, a little drama, moments putting you on the edge of your seat. Man. This is what the "D" really is. You will understand.. I know you will.

Mekaku City Actors

on

Mekakucity Actors is the real deal. The complete package: good writing, excellent art that fits it well, and a complete and satisfying arc. It doesn't insult the intelligence of the viewer, isn't reliant on tropes that make the inner otaku squeel with joy (though they do exist), and doesn't go down the beaten path. In case it wasn't clear, I really like this show. Don't get me wrong, it has cliches I don't like. There's the overuse of singing as a way to move the plot, the characters aren't written nearly as tightly as they should be, once again we're dealing with a bunch of teens with the main character... Ergo Proxy Review. Note: This review contains spoilers. For this series, though, I would consider the pluses and minuses of reading spoiler-containing reviews regardless because this series could end up being a waste of time if you go into it with the wrong expectations. Having gone into this series expecting it to be a philosophical mess- I can happily inform readers that I left this series pleasantly surprised and satisfied. Alderamin on the Sky

on

A lot of shows are just promotions for manga and light novels. But most people who watch anime couldn't care less about those, we just want our entertainment. The list of shows that are so blatantly incomplete that it ruins all their potential is painfully long, and it hurts a lot more when there is some great art and a lot of effort put into a show that is disposable by design. Alderamin on the Sky is yet another show that has one season that doesn't stand on its own. There is no gentle way to put this, but the structure of the show is all sorts of wrong. From the endless talking about the far future and... See full review

Bananya

on

This is a series best suited for the very young, or those who just genuinely like children's entertainment. The narrator tells us what's happening as tiny cat bananas have their daily adventures, such as Bananya Befriends a Mouse and Bananya Gets Lost at the Grocery Store. It's in the vein of See Spot Run.  The animation is beautiful. The lines are thick and colours strong, like watching stickers come to life. The sound is clear and the song inoffensive. All the bananyas say is "Nya" but some of them (sexy long-haired bananya-kun) are still pretty funny. Characters are one-note... See full review

Planetarian

I'll risk being unpopular with this one, but I don't think this is good. The animation is really well done, the visuals and character designs are nice as well as the sound - so excellent production values and a good presentation. The setting, in fact, is rendered quite well: a world on the brink of extinction under a relentless downpour that robs everything of colour. But that's just about all the positive I'm willing to say about it. The story is just way too cheesy for my taste. It's purposely aimed at emotionally influencing and manipulating the viewers. Nothing wrong with that - and to be honest I... See full review

Story Little orphan Mimiko is left alone when her grandma has to leave, but instead of being sad, is cheerful and quite capable of taking care of herself. A baby panda and his panda papa wander into Mimiko's yard and she ends up adopting them as family. It's a cute little tale of constructing your own extraordinary found family and keeping it. Kind of wish-fulfillment for the kindergarten set. Animation The animation is so charmingly old-fashioned I was smiling right from the dancing pandas in the beginning credits. It's simple and not overly detailed, but works well as a children's... See full review

This show was a hearthrob and was just made for entertainment purposes. You get nothing out of it other than girlish fantasies. Story: I rated it a 6 because yes there was a plot and everything but it was basically just made for girlish fantasies. Each episode faced it's own little problem that was blown out of proportions and over dramatized. Animation: I gave it a 9 becuase it basically used all the same colours (pink, blue, green, yellow are the main ones). But over all it did good. Sound: No complaints. Characters: I found that the characters were very similar to the ones in Fullmetal Alchemist (the... See full review

I was sad that this anime was not completed because I would have liked for it to continue. Story: The story outline was great and having so much strategy involved that it keeps you in suspense but enough action to also keep you engaged with a healthy ammount of comedy thrown in. Animation: The amount of detail put into it was great. Definately not a let down. Sound: They used hte same sound track but in different tones. It was enjoyable but I wanted a bit more variety out of it. Characters: Love the characters. Good character developement and interesting twists in the story using the characters.

La Storia Della Arcana Famiglia

on

The story is very well made. There was some point where I got confused but it clears everything up later, like most anime does. The animation is one of the best I've seen, there was a part in episode 6 where the bodies disappeared in the background though. The sound may of been because Anime-Planet doesn't have the best volume, however it is kind of low. The characters are very well made and have great backstories. The backstories is what I like best. That is what I think of the anime.

Fun Fact: The title means "Arcana Family History."

Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa

on

SPOILERS! I didn't enjoy this movie as much as I enjoyed Sacred Star of Milos but it was good other than that. I have few complaints and I really enjoyed how it showed Edward's life on the other side of the portal. Story: I knocked two points off because while it did show Ed's life on the other side and Al in his body, it took place after the ending of Fullmetal Alchemist and I liked the Brotherhood ending much better. Also, it was a somewhat cliche story line (good guy gets tangled up in mess that he wasn't supposed to and has to face bad guys to save two worlds). Animation: The animatiion was great and... Ace Attorney

Ace Attorney was a weird one. I watched the first part of the season as it aired, took a break and then came back to it to binge watch the second half. As an actual anime it was pretty bad, but at the same time it was so enjoyable I couldn't stop watching. The story isn't so much a continual thing as it it semi-episodic. I say semi as it's not broken down into single episode chunks but instead across the 24 episodes we see 7 trials and 1 filler episode. The first trial is episode one, and after that there are multiple episodes that make up one case. There is very little overarching story, and the... See full review

Welcome to the NHK!

on

It starts out crazy, but after sticking with it you begin to understand the style. If you do stick with the show, 'Welcome to the NHK!' has a solid plotline with an interesting perspective into the life of man struggling to live while being terrified of the outside world. Add to that the solid characters and you have a 5 star anime... less 1.5 for being hard to follow at times (due to the insanity).

Monster Strike

on

So we take pinball throw in a little pokemon and the tiny toy figure creature craze of the 80s and we have Monster Strike.  The show is quite fun to watch but falters along traditional storytelling composition writing rules that you would expect from any quality show worth a look.  It comes close in several respects to appearing to follow many of those rules but never quite lines up.  When you have key characters that literally appear to come out of nowhere, it throws the story out of tempo and appears like bad movie making guffaws like when House on Haunted Hill remake killed off Owen Wilson... 5 Centimeters per Second

on

Oiikayy. So I'm going to base this review off of my fresh and pure observations and feelings coming straight out of watching this movie: I am not satisfied. This anime, to me, was almost 50% scenery and visuals. These aspects of the film, I admit full heartedly, are pretty outstanding. The only critique I would have against them is the whole dark-and-light feel to a majority of the instances of the scenery(why was the sky so dark AND light when the rocket took off?). Aside from that, the artistry is very brilliant and articulate. The next best thing this movie has to offer is its well PLOTTED story. I... See full review

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-

The Story: The first few minutes sucked because of the sheer ovesimplicity of the plot: "protagonist gets to a different world and we don't need to explain a shit." Well, that's just wrong. From there on, though, it was getting better and better and it'd drawn me really into the story. Then middle eps came (around 15) and it kinda got frustrating to watch. It was the horror part, really. I still can't say it was shitty, it was just frustrating. Than, surprisingly, all got a bit better and continued in the manner of the first eps, just with a bit more cool and matured protagonist. Chars: I'm not... See full review

For a show that treads almost no new ground, changes its premise a couple of times, and ends just as the character-driven story drama really kicks off, Psychoelectric Girl is remarkably endearing. You see, the show wraps itself in the fluffy warmth of a dozen high-school-anime clichés, but at (or very near) its core is a meditation on what it means to care—about people, about things, about oneself—and how to balance that against the pressures of the world around you. Which, in and of itself, I know, borders on cliché, because so much high school anime is... See full review

Gangsta.

What I Liked: Having a disabled protagonist who was well-realised (and well-acted). The soundtrack, which was a great assortment of beat-filled jazz that added a nice cool factor to the series. The fact that the Opening and Ending themes were animated in the same selective colour style. The whole super-soldiers / drugs causing birth defects aspect was unique and interesting, if not a little confusing at times. The Opening Theme, despite the awful Engrish. What I Didn't: The animation quality dips around episode 8, as does the writing and pacing. Alex felt poorly characterised with most characters reducing... See full review

What I Liked: Nice use of a cyclic format to convey a sense of futility and despair. The strong cast of secondary characters. Ozu's characterisation. The simplistic but fluid free-form animation. Each episode is fast-paced but enjoyably easy to watch. TL;DR - Well that was disappointing Okay, if I had to give this anime a metaphor, I'd compare it to a really good athlete that just didn't prepare properly before the big race. So he/she starts off the race strong, but then the lack of preparedness comes back to bite them in the ass and they end up face-planting into a pile of shit. And so runs the True Tears anime. When it first started, I honestly kind of liked it. Although it was somewhat rather cliche (utilizing the never-would-happen-in-real-life scenario where the girl of MC's dreams is living with him in the same house. Why? Because plot... Saiunkoku Monogatari. Absolutely beautiful. I've never felt this hyped since Fushigi Yuugi. The story is amazing. The synopsis doesn't really touch the bigger picture of this series. It mostly involves politics with a side of romance. So it's not too sappy. It hits pretty pretty close to reality. I don't want to spoil you. I strongly suggest you watching this. The animation gives me the same feel as Fushigi Yuugi (my all time favorite) which is probably exactly why I got so hooked up on this. The characters are amazing. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Therefor, as I saw the trailer for this one movie I felt an enormous urge to see it. I had a picture of how it would be and was hoping for a movie that I would enjoy, however that, by the ending of the film, to be an miscalculation on my part. And why?  The story: The story, on paper, does seem interesting at first glance. Using something that seem to be rare in the world of animated movies. A mix of a biography and supernatural story. We get to see the evolution of... See full review
