A series posessing multiple aspects of diffrent genres. Maybe the most important degree in giving a score to this series is in the genre it is put. For me it's placed in the Sci-fi category, with a touch of fantasy mixed in it. The story of this series is well placed, but that doesn't make it perfect. There are many flaws in this series. Are they enough to make you stop watching? Yes, I'm afraid is the answer I have to give. However, if you endure it and watch till the end, you may be glad that you did; Or like me, you could be disappointed a bit. The series uses diffrent takes on stuff (like most... read more

First off, you can say I'm blinded by this series, considering the scores I gave to it. Well.... I just have to say that if you'd seen it with my perspectives, you'd have been blinded by it too. This is a series that posesses all that a good series needs to. There are down sides to it, but that's just becouse of individual preferences. The most important aspect of a series is the story, which is something that this series is superior to all it's kind. After the story, the cast of charactors and their backstory comes to mind, and I can with absolute certainty declare that everyone has been placed in... read more

Kill Me Baby

NIAIK's avatar By on Aug 1, 2012

This is one of those series that any comedy fan must watch. It's one that'll be much appreciated and loved. Altough it posesses no overall story plot, it manages to keep up a good face. watching through this series, there was not a moment of it that I didn't enjoy and I found myself laughing to the very end. The only downside is, I couldn't bring myself to watch them one after each other, since.... well... on one side I was really worried about laughing too much, and on the other hand, the lack of a plot could easily be felt. Considering all these things, your time won't be wasted if you even have a small... read more

Special A

itachirockstar's avatar By on Aug 1, 2012

Once I watched this anime online, I immediately had to download it. It really is that good. It is very rare to come across a storyline that satisfies you in every way. I can't count the number of times I've watched an anime and was left wondering if the characters ever did confess their love to one another and what happened between them. Special A answers those questions for you. I love the storyline; it's funny, romantic, and downright silly. I love the characters, every single person plays a part and is developed well. The animation is awesome, perfectly illustrating what the author of the manga... read more

Mahou Sensei Negima!

roriconfan's avatar By on Jul 31, 2012

- Animated by studio Xebec, notorious for being unable to produce a single above average show besides Love Hina.
- Directed by Habara Nobuyoshi, who also did DNAngel, Fafner, and Broken Blade. This guy is really good at taking interesting premises and making very little out of them.
- Based on the manga of Akamatsu Ken, who prior to this had done a sci-fi romcom called A.I. Love You, which was not bad but surely felt standard, as well as the smash hit Love Hina. This was his next project which was hardly as good.

ef - a tale of melodies

FullmetalCowboy24's avatar By on Jul 31, 2012

Critic's Log - Earthdate: July 31, 2012. Review #16: Ef - A Tale of Melodies The Past can be hard to leave behind, because remembering it might be pleasant, but remembering it can also be painful. But the best way to leave it behind is to keep moving forward to the future, do you have memories that you do not want to forget? Anyway, here is Ef - A Tale of Melodies! Ef - A Tale of Melodies tells two stories (like "Memories" did) one takes place in the past where Himura Yuu meets a girl named Amamiya Yuuko who seems to know him, but he doesn't know her. Magic Knight Rayearth

The debut anime of CLAMP. Brings back fond memories but gets easily over after you see it for what it really is.

ART SECTION: 5/10 [CLAMP your hands if you believe this series is dated.]

Take your average Mahou Shojo. Toss in some mecka and a fairy tale land and you got it! Bright colors, corny JRPG uniforms, character figures without much detail, lots of SD moments. These elements are not bad by themselves but the dated technology along with low production values and numerous clichés really ruin what good there was in it. Too many stills. Shounen Sarutobi Sasuke

roriconfan's avatar By on Jul 31, 2012

Historically-wise, Shonen Sarutobi Sasuke is the first exported Japanese animated film and you immediately see how the west rushed to make changes in order to hide some oriental features. They changed the hero’s profession from a ninja to a samurai, because back then a ninja in the west was just a ruthless assassin and not fit for a children’s movie protagonist. Then they changed the title of the movie to just Magic Boy, because kids back then wouldn’t have a clue what ninjutsu is or who this Sarutobi Sasuke was. This was the pre-Naruto era, remember?

Speaking of Naruto, the title... read more

Where is the #$%@()&^ story!
That is what I yelled when I finished this series. I got trolled from the opening video to expect some sort of comedy going psycho along the way. It was back in the day when the community in my country had no idea of what a series would be about and Elfen Lied was on its peak. So yeah, watching the intro made me think it would be something similar.

So this is a series about four princesses from some magic kingdom coming to the human realm. Why? Just for the heck of it. They are also based on famous monsters. Why? Just for the heck of it. They also appear in the... read more

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Notice: Consider this a review of all four seasons.

PROPER MINDSET

Nanoha is a mahou shojo that messed with the archetypical formula in an attempt to not bore the viewers with another Sailor Moon rehash. Although that partially did the trick, in the longrun it fell victim of its inability to evolve properly or make good use of its duration.

This series is actually a remake of a hentai. It has more story and no sex, turning the genre into ecchi.

ART SECTION: 6/10

There wasn’t much detail given to character figures, especially the faces. But as far as body types go, they were minimalistic but nicely made. Minus one point for that.

The transformation sequences and the special attacks were very well made but the repeating footage of them is a common trait (and problem) in all mainstream mahou shojo. Minus one point for that too.

Macademi Wasshoi!

roriconfan's avatar By on Jul 31, 2012

Animated by Studio Zexcs, which hasn’t made a single good anime outside of Love Hina. Directing is done by Kanasaki Takaomi who made a season of Shool Rumble and Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka ? In a similar to those style, Macademi Wasshoi (MW) is a school comedy and parody of various genres and clichés. A newcomer would have a hard time understanding the jokes while the veterans will most likely find that the overall anime lacks depth or that has nothing serious to care about it in the longrun.

Animated by J.C. Staff, which translates to retarded fan service. The director is also nobody special. Maburaho is yet another ecchi comedy with mostly random humour and events that occasionally tries to offer a bit more in terms of characterization. It ultimately fails but at least it tries; something most of its kind doesn’t even bothers with.

So what gives this time? The world in the series finds everyone with the ability to cast magic for a few thousand times during their lives before it runs out. The lead male is your typical harem dork with the unusual ability to use powerful magic a... read more

Lucky Star (LS) is a very successful moneytrap. It has simplistic animation, tells us straight in the face that it’s shallow entertainment and a monument to product placement, and yet sells a billion bucks. It takes great talent to convince the audience you are exploiting their weaknesses and this is a fine example.

Vampires have gotten a bad rap lately. First and foremost, we've got that "Twishite Saga" crap trying to pass off as good writing. And then we've got the movies, which are even worse. (Though I must say, props to Kristen Stewart for managing to portray only one facial expression for the whole series.) There are those "Vampire Diaries" books which started out okay, but which are now just "Twishite" with a less funny name. Even anime! Level E

roriconfan's avatar By on Jul 30, 2012

Level E is basically a troll comedy around the farces of an alien prince. As long as you dig his obnoxious personality then the comedy factor will work on you. I must say myself that the first arc was highly entertaining since I had no idea what is going on with the setting; it felt very mysterious, scary and humorous at the same time in a way that reminded me of Men In Black. Yet as soon as it was over I was more prepared to see something similar in later arcs and thus the rest did not feel as amazingly funny as the initial episodes. ...*Sigh*...  This is one of the strangest and most hard to watch anime's I have ever encountered. Where do I start? The plot is stale and sometimes non-exsistant and I mean they actually tried to cover the fact that they threw in useless filler into a Four Episode anime. The characters also are either stale or just plain evil, the brother is a fine example of this (no spoilers). The animation is ok for the time I guess but it's not always about how it look's. Osamu Tezuka strikes yet again with yet another interesting experimental short movie. Legend of the Forest is interesting for its concept and not for its story or characters. What you practically get here is an excuse of a story used purely to show the evolution of animation. Each segment of the movie is done in a style that is reflecting a different decade, and as the story progresses you see the animation methods as they evolved over the decades. Starting from static pictures, to granny black & white, to color, to the use of computers in order to make objects look more real. It is all quite... read more

There are times, however, when even with that mindset the formula gets so stale that even the writers themselves seem to have stopped giving a crap, resulting in something that could have been subtitled The Contractually Obligatory Movie. Before I started to watch anime, I was scared of anything and everything. So then, I picked up my first volume of manga--one of the earlier volumes of "Bleach." I was so terrified, I couldn't even look at "Bleach" for a few years. So I decided to overcome my fears and watch a horror anime (horror manga would come later). I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep, but I didn't want to be such a wimp. Therefore, I started to watch the only horror anime of which I'd heard. I missed the first episode, so I watched the second. It was so not-scary; I was laughing the whole time. How was this... read more

This is a slow-paced, character-driven anime centered around a game of skill, karuta.  I think it is superbly well done on a number of levels.  So why do I love this anime so much? 1. Characters.  Characters are of course THE reason to watch an anime like this, and these do not disappoint.  First and foremost, they ring very true to me.  Chihaya is feather-brained but extremely devoted and genuine.  Taichi is cool-headed and everything comes easy to him.  "Tsukue-kun" devotes himself but always falls short of Taichi.  And so on.  They just work, on a... read more

If you want to watch this because you enjoyed Steins;Gate, let me stop you right now. This is not like Steins;Gate. The two animes are ridiculously different.  I initially watched this thinking, hey, the tag says it's a psychological thriller, I'll give it a go. Well, there was some psychology to it, I'll admit, but the first thing I noticed that the tags failed to mention was that it was a HAREM. And his sister was part of it. That's just messed up. After that major disappointment, I'm pretty sure I just searched for flaws in the anime out of spite.  By the 8th episode, I wanted to finish the... read more

Rinne no Lagrange

This is a mecha show planned by Studio I.G. which is very good at sci-fi shows, but is otherwise animated by Xebec, a studio notorious for its bad anime. It is directed by Satou Tatsuo, who has made lots of mecha shows, most of which are unorthodox but otherwise slow and usually anti-climactic (Martian Successor Nadesico, Gekiganger 3, Shingu, Stellvia). He also has Suzuki Toshimasa as an assistant, who in the past directed Heroic Age and the second season of Polyphonica. So ok, he isn’t much of a talent. Thus we have a project based on antithesis, decent director and planner but also... read more

Being an early Masamune Shirow work, I expected the usual “ sci-fi with gorgeous women and cool guns” package. But all I got was an empty box.

Very mediocre and unimaginative graphics and music themes to the point of stop paying attention half the time. There are of course beautiful females and detail in machinery but they feel nothing, compared with Shirow’s later works. The only thing I can say that I will clearly remember for life is the bad-guys’ weird-looking airship shape.

A megalomaniac villain is looking for a way to obtain magical-eyed people, who inherit these... read more

Lamune

Lamune is a simple slice of life light romance executed… simply. In fact, the word that defines the whole anime is “simple” . But let me make it clear that this is not always a bad thing as the execution of an idea is usually more important that the actual idea itself.

Let’s start with the story and the question if there is one at all. Most of the plot is nothing but the “simple” everyday lives of a group of teenagers, with the focus given on the main duo, Kenji and Nanami. I wouldn’t call it linear as we are constantly shown flashbacks from their... read more

Ladies Versus Butlers!

roriconfan's avatar By on Jul 26, 2012

Animated by Xebec, a studio that never made a worthy show in its whole existence. Directed by Ootsuki Atsushi, the same guy who did over the top erotic comedies such as Kanokon and Motto to Love-Ru. Yeah, you know right away in what you are getting yourself into.

Ladies versus Butlers is amongst the most honest anime in existence. At no point is it pretending to be anything other than brain-dead ecchi comedy. It doesn’t try to tell a story, it doesn’t try to have characters you should like, it doesn’t even try to be anything other than the tired, repetitive softporn humour... read more

I continue to violently hate the ecchi genre, yet violently love it at the same time. And it’s in no way because it’s always going to give you something new and exciting to watch. The ecchi harem genre especially, for me at least, is always the kind of place I go when I have no idea what to watch next and want something semi-decent that I know I’ll like in some regard. The anime in this genre are so dependably generic and so…well, they’re just always the same. And while the degree of comedy changes from one anime to the next, the plot devices, the characters, the settings... read more

At first, I really liked this anime. The atmosphere was great, the music was fitting and exciting, and overall it was fairly enjoyable.. for a while. But very quickly, they introduced Raki. In the english dub, he is the most annoying, whiny, pathetic excuse of a man that I have ever seen. His voice was as obnoxiously grating as it was childish. It did fit him perfectly, but as a character he completely changed the focus of the show, and not for the better. But, if you like a show where you can smell the fetid feminism from a mile away as the courageous, empowered and unstoppable heroine repeatedly rescues... read more

Vampire Princess Miyu TV

STORY SECTION: 3/10

Demon-like creatures seduce and corrupt humans in order to feed on their vanity and misery. A vampire-like heroine is hunting them and sends them back to the darkness… That is pretty much the story.

95% of the episodes were stand alones, playing along the usual monster-of-the-week formula. The few scenario developments left me completely uninterested as I found them cliché and predictable. And nope; no conclusion either.

Some could say that the story is good, as each episode has a very tragic story around human feelings and desires and it leaves no... read more
