Riki-Oh

Apr 24, 2017

Riki-Oh is one of my favorite examples of the manly-man genre of manga/anime that was prevalent in the late-80's into the 90's. Fist of the North Star and Jojo get a lot of attention, but Riki-Oh is one of the most violent manga I've ever read and the bizarre variety of kills the hero and his enemies accumulate over the course of the story are worth reading the manga for. Riki-Oh is most remembered for a live action adaptation that has garnered cult status due to the cheesy, over-the-top gore effects. Though not the topic of this review, the OVA does follow the first arc of the manga, as the film did, so... See full review

Rage of Bahamut: Genesis

Apr 13, 2017

Good fantasy anime are hard to come by thanks to the prevalence of light novel adaptations taking the focus from serious fantasy to comedic or spoof-y attempts at the genre. Rage of Bahamut: Genesis is a pretty good fantasy series with a lot of good ideas and interesting characters that unravels a little as it goes along due to episode limitations and probably budget constraints. Story Favaro is a bounty hunter, liar, and prankster who meets the dashing Amira, a young lady in need of accompaniment to the town of Helheim. Of course, she's no ordinary girl and the two wind up embroiled in a huge conspiracy... See full review

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid

Mar 22, 2017

It's been a pretty bad season for me as far as anime goes and aside from the wonderful second season of KonoSuba, Dragon Maid has been the standout star of Winter 2017. It's the one anime that I've actively looked forward to watching week after week and I'm sure will be on the top of my list of best shows of 2017. This is as close to perfect entertainment as I've seen in quite a while and it's going to require some explanation since I tend to shy away or outright hate shows like this in most circumstances. But Dragon Maid is just so darn endearing. It's the story of Miss Kobayashi, an office worker who... See full review

Gabriel Dropout

Mar 15, 2017

Gabriel Dropout is a dime-a-dozen cutesie comedy anime but one that is actually funny and entertaining. It balances the cute and "waifu" elements with some pretty solid comedy to create what I think is one of the best experiences of the season. That's not to say that Gabriel Dropout is in any way perfect, in fact, it's far from it. Gabriel is an angel who comes from Heaven to Earth to learn about humans and our way of life. She goes to a Japanese high school and quickly goes from a model angel to a Tomoko Kuroki-like NEET obsessed with online video games. She befriends a responsible and sweet... See full review

KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!! 2

Mar 15, 2017

KonoSuba season one started a bit rocky for me but once I got into it, I saw just how brilliant it was. It's a farcical, comedic take on traditional fantasy/video game/person in a strange world tropse with a sense of humor beyond that of a typical anime. Boob and butt jokes there may be, sexual overtones there always are, but it's all grounded by the main character, Kazuma. He's the straight man for this insane world, a straight man who is also not afraid to be sexually devious, conniving, and threaten women with violence because he's a total alpha. Unlike a traditional anime where the main character is a... See full review

One Piece Movie 1

Mar 3, 2017

The first One Piece movie takes place after the Syrup Village Arc and is another middling affair that gives fans a concise little story arc to enjoy, though doesn't really go above and beyond to provide anything more than a forgettable experience. The pirate Wooman spent his life collecting all the gold he had and hid it on an island. Of course, this catches the attention of the Going Merry but also the evil captain El Drago. The two crews face off and El Drago reveals he has a devil fruit power allowing him to shoot soundwave beams from his mouth. Luffy and Zoro get separated from Nami and Usopp and... See full review

One Piece: Defeat The Pirate Ganzak!

Mar 3, 2017

Before the One Piece anime started proper, we had this OVA taking place after the Orange Town arc and before Syrup Village. It's a 30 minute affair that doesn't warrant too much discussion as it's only real purpose is to show off the first few characters (Luffy, Zoro, and Nami) as well as introduce the style of the series. As such, watching Defeat the Pirate Ganzak isn't required to enjoy One Piece, but it's an interesting little piece of history and does, at the very least, have an interesting if one-dimensional villain. Luffy, Nami, and Zoro are on their way to the Grand Line when their ship is sunk and... See full review

Masamune-kun's Revenge

Mar 2, 2017

Masamune-kun's Revenge is another anime where the generic plot just works for some people, but doesn't really cut it for me. What at first seems like it may be an edgier, dark comedy about revenge, as the title implies, quickly devolves into a generic rom/com/harem with an array of girls to make waifu, a main character who acts like an alpha but is a beta in wolf's clothing, and a surprising lack of comedy or drama for a show that hinges on these facets. The story is pretty simple. Makabe was a fat kid who hung around Adagaki Aki, a local rich girl. The two had a falling out and he was called Pig's Foot... See full review

My Hero Academia

Feb 28, 2017

Lately, I've been able to review anime solely based on how fast I watch it. And by that, I don't mean binge-watching, I mean how fast I speed up the video player to get through a show. And My Hero Academia was running at a super-fast 2x speed as I spent the afternoon watching this boring, vapid, and completely run-of-the-mill shonen. How this became one of the most popular anime of 2016 is beyond me given how little it brings to the table. Obvious comparisons to One Punch Man are being made but I don't know that these are fair. I'm unfamiliar with the manga for each, but the anime came out around the same... See full review

The Dragon Dentist (2017)

Feb 28, 2017

The Dragon Dentist is a surprising film, one that introduces a weird concept that on paper sounds silly, but in execution is interesting, entertaining, and whimsical in an almost Ghibli-sense. The story is about the titular Dragon Dentists, a group of people who have died on Earth, are reborn through a dragon's teeth, and are tasked with taking care of creatures called mushi, monsters that act as a dragon's plaque. A young soldier is reborn and through his eyes we experience his coming to terms with what has taken place and learning his new job. Down below, two factions are warring, one friendly with the... Hellsing Ultimate

Dec 31, 2016

Let me get this out of the way right now: Hellsing Ultimate is not good. It has a shallow story, weak characters, I'm not a fan of the animation style in any way, and the vast majority of the show is pointless blood, gore, cursing, bad dialogue, and out of place comedy. It's the edgy fantasies of every teenaged boy sitting in the back of his history class having his OP character shred through Nazi vampires in his mind as the teacher pretends like he doesn't know that kid will grow into a serial killer. Everything about this show is wrong. "But Ratchet," you are most likely typing in the comments... See full review

Love Live! Sunshine!!

Sep 24, 2016

Love Live Sunshine is the greatest showcase of noise escaping underage girl's mouths since Boku no Pico. Not only that, but it's a fantastic plagiarization of Love Live! School Idol Project, stealing the plot, the character tropes, and even the name of the show! Oh...wait, this is a sequel or soft reboot or whatever? Then why didn't they at least try to make something different? I mean, as cute and entertaining as the first series was you can only redo the same things so many times before people get bored. Like, the only difference between this show and the first series is the fact that we're focusing on a... See full review

Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya 3rei!!

Sep 21, 2016

If there is one anime franchise that has been the recepient of more insults by me than any other, it's Fate/Kaleid. The early seasons were muddled, weird shows that combined the action of Fate with the yuri and loli exploitation of Kodomo no Jikan. As the series has progressed, though, it's gotten better and defined itself much more, introducing neat story elements while maintaining the sexual humor that has come to be the Kaleid trademark. Everyone knows this show from one GIF of Kuro kissing Illya and anytime you mention the show to anyone, that's what pops in their head. Telling them that there is a plot... See full review

New Game!

Sep 18, 2016

New Game! is the greatest piece of propaganda in the history of workplace propaganda. Not only does it make work look like a ton of fun, it makes it look like offices are just cubicles full of harems ripe for the pickin'. This has to have been funded by the Japanese Department of Labor or whatever. Not only does it focus on an brand-spanking new employee fresh out of high school and happier than ever to be working in an office, it also focuses on a bunch of other twenty-somethings who are all cute, content, and happy to be spending nearly every waking moment glued to computer screens and being yelled at for... Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-

Sep 18, 2016

Typically I avoid light novel based anime purely because of the character tropes and story ideas that plague the medium have given us a vacuum of middling adaptations with no soul or entertainment value. Re:ZERO's initial plot description gave me pause and I really wasn't considering watching it because I didn't like the video game-like dying and restarting at a checkpoint system that I'm guessing was inspired by All You Need is Kill. But a friend told me to check out the first episode and, I have to say, I was hooked. There wasn't a long-winded origin story, there weren't whole episodes dedicated to... See full review

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes: Summer Special

Sep 6, 2016

The poster for this OVA made me think I was getting another beach episode. What I instead got was a stupid idol episode involving fan favorite character Kokoro. Because I, personally, hate her, it made this episode all the less interesting. In order to help a girl's father's company Kokoro gives up being a police officer to pursue a career as an idol. With her friends support she becomes super popular, only to find that she would rather be battling Arsene and not singing generic J-pop to horny fanboys. As you can tell, my enthusiasm for this episode was as high as it could go. While it continued to show... See full review

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes

Sep 6, 2016

Milky Holmes looks like an anime from the early to mid '00s, feels like an anime of the period, and kinda falls into that weird category Magical Pokan did where it's a seemingly kid friendly anime from the outside with a strange sense of humor and sexuality that makes it hard to gauge exactly who the anime is for. Is it for kids who love erect nipples or older teens who love erect penises? The plot of the show is that a group called Milky Holmes, consisting of four girls based on famous characters, go to a school for detectives. Here they are constantly faced with their arch-rival Arsene, and her three... See full review

Tales of Zestiria: The X

Sep 3, 2016

What started as an eye-bleedingly gorgeous fantasy adventure quickly became an obvious cash grab, capitalizing on the success of the Tales of Zestiria video game as well as attempting to tie together it and the upcoming Tales of Berseria. When I learned that the anime would be thirteen episodes, I knew I wasn't going to find a point to watching it. And as I grew interested in the story, I wound up buying the game and blowing through pretty much everything the anime would cover, making it pointless to keep watching. But even then, and this holds true for the game too, there are issues with the story and... See full review

Great Teacher Onizuka

Sep 1, 2016

Great Teacher Onizuka is an anime I'm ashamed to say I have never finished in all my years watching anime. It's widely considered a classic, one of the best anime ever made, and yet I never mustered the time to watch it, dedicating time to a bunch of other garbage I would have been better off not watching. But anyway, I've sat through every episode of Great Teacher Onizuka and can safely say that its place as a classic of anime is well deserved. 22 year old Eikichi Onizuka, a former gangster, decides to become a teacher. Clannad After Story

Aug 10, 2016

Years ago I wrote a doting review of Clannad After Story, citing the exceptional characters, emotional story, and overall themes as making this one of anime's best dramas. Years later and a little wiser, Clannad After Story is still a great show that deals with relatable themes and emotions but I feel like it was more cheesy than I originally thought. The first season worked as a great Key anime, exhibiting all the elements you've come to expect of Key and creating a series of story arcs that build relatable, likeable characters while never losing sight of the romantic subplot that, while never as well... I Finally Quit
I should have quit a few episodes ago but with episode eight, I've had enough. Bad directing, piss-poor writing, and the eighth episode provides one of the most unintentionally hilarious and terrible character deaths I have seen in all my years watching anime. This show has no chance of getting better and the direction it is taking is abysmal. I've seen a few people say that the manga is no better and continues to be a god-awful mess of incomprehensible fight scenes and terrible storytelling so I believe it is time to stop. Clannad: Another World, Tomoyo Chapter

Aug 7, 2016

Tomoyo is best girl, this is an irrefutable fact. Actually, it's completely up to you, but for me Tomoyo is great and this supplemental episode, while having no bearing on the overall plot of the series, is a fantastic What-If scenario that builds her character and provides a touching romance. The main point of the episode is to showcase the divide between a student council president with a bright future and a delinquent who winds up working in recycling and going nowhere. The entire world tells the two that being together is going to hold her back and ruin her future, while Tomoyo decides that what she... See full review

Clannad

Aug 6, 2016

Five years ago I viewed Clannad and wrote my original review for it. Rewatching it all this time later, I decided that my original review wasn't going to cut it and here I am, giving you my thoughts after this second viewing of what is still my favorite drama anime of all time and the best Key has ever offered us (this of course includes the second season, but I'll have a review dedicated to that soon enough). Clannad is, from the outside looking in, a harem. But the harem ingredients are subdued and don't have a lot of impact on what is, in essence, a series of character studies dealing with family, love... See full review

Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu

Aug 6, 2016

I've reviewed every season of Monogatari on this site (with the exception of Koyomimonogatari) so if you're wondering how big of a fanboy of this series I am, then I'd point you to those reviews. This will be a quick, simple look at the first of a trilogy of movies based on a book that you could read in half the time it'd take you to watch the whole trilogy. Kizumonogatari is more of the same for fans of the series, the starting point for everything that has taken place in every series of the past that is, for some reason, the finale of the Monogatari anime run. And though the logic behind it is strange... See full review

ReLIFE

Every once in a while a high school drama comes along that manages to grip me despite my disdain for the genre. ReLIFE, given its immediate release of every episode and its silly premise made me leary, and because of going into it with few expectations I was pleasantly surprised by the emotions, characters, and humor that permeate every episode. Kaizaki Arata, due to pretty awful circumstances, has become a shut-in at age 27 and has little going for his life. Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia

Jul 5, 2016

This season has so far had its fair share of good pilot episodes. But I knew that there had to be that one borderline porno show that would sour the soup and here it is kids. Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia not only is entirely unpronouncable gibberish, it's also an insanely jaw-droppingly disgusting piece of animation that I would expect from a low-brow 90's OVA, not the 2016 summer season. We open on a pair of titties with conveniently placed lens flare keeping us from seeing anything too dirty. And we go on for a minute and a half watching some nameless character get felt up and I guess fucked in... See full review

Berserk (2016)

Jul 1, 2016

EDITED FOR EPISODE TWO: The second episode brought to light a problem I'm not sure anyone is discussing since the animation seems to be the major setback for most viewers. While I will continue to defend that the animation isn't that terrible, I've had to drop Berserk after this second episode because of its' God-awful pace. Maybe it's just me but I feel like this second episode moved way too fast, cramming way too much into one twenty-two minute package. Because of that the dialogue is so quick with no pauses and awkward transitions that would work better in speech bubbles than as actual conversation... See full review

Magical Pokan

Jun 14, 2016

Magical Pokan is seeing a resurgence of interest after a particularly well animated hentai game was released last week focusing on Liru. So, in the interest of understanding the source of this hentai, I decided to take a look at Magical Pokan, if only because Liru is pretty much the cutest animal girl I've ever seen. Magical Pokan is a confusing show that manages the humorlessness of a child's slice-of-life program with an occasionally jarring assault of perverse or borderline hentai humor. It's the tale of a werewolf, magician, vampire, and cyborg who live together in a tree and try to acclimate to human... See full review

Mobile Suit Gundam I

Apr 24, 2016

A recap movie of the original Gundam television series, Mobile Suit Gundam I succeeds as an entertaining movie that moves at a fast clip and makes sure there is emphasis on human interaction as well as the robot battles we've all come to see. Be that as it may, it suffers from some of the pitfalls of a serialized weekly television series as well as archetypes of a bygone era. In this film we see Side 7, home to Amuro and Fraw Bow, attacked by Zeon going after a Federation fighter ship and mobile suit. In the interest of watching (or attempting to watch at least) all the Lupin TV specials I find myself quitting Another Page about a third of the way in. Lupin is framed for the murder of an archaeologist and winds up joining up with the dead man's daughter in order to find Marco Polo's treasure.
