The drop list keeps growing. Combined with Watched, it would make around 20% of the list, so that means I drop one out of five. I can't tell whether that's a good track record or not. Anyway, I've decided to write about the dropees as well. Yay.
This is not terrible. I managed three episodes, though I probably should have dropped it at the second one, since it was rather annoying. Basically, it doesn't have any pull. I didn't find myself caring for the kids and their dream of playing karuta together forever. I think I can see how it unwraps post episode 3, and I don't find anything appealing about it. Karuta is about as exciting as competitive wall watching. I suppose I'm biased when it comes to card games - I find them horribly boring - but I honestly don't think anyone would find this particular game very interesting. It's based on memorization and manual speed / reflexes. Id est, no tactics in sight, no strategy needed. Who knows, perhaps it develops into something interesting, but I seriously doubt it, and as far I'm concerned, three episodes is fair enough of a chance.
Not to mention it's two episodes more than Gosick ever got. Tch, I barely restrained myself from dropping this in the first ten minutes or so. I love mystery. Due to that, I've sat through shows that aren't otherwise deserving of time and attention - below average stuff like Psychic Detective Yakumo, even downright crap like Spiral. This, however, was just too fucking annoying. Imagine Eyeshield 21's Sena Kobayakawa as lead male character (ie, spineless, perpetually confused, unable to stand up to overbearing females (to clarify, this would be the Sena from the beginning of the show)) and Haruhi Suzumiya (overbearing, annoying, whiny, selfish tsundere, essentially the crystallization of the archetype) as the lead female character. I'd continue, but that has sent you screaming and running for cover, so I'd be typing in vain.
(Side-note: Shot through the keyhole - for some reason, I instantly knew that was the case, but I can't remember where I have seen / read that before.)
