I intend this to be the first in the series of posts reflecting on recommendations (how unpredictable...) for various anime I've seen. Probably focusing only on failure, but I haven't decided yet. The next one will be on Death Note. I actually wrote two separate posts on that but scrapped both because I was displeased with them.
I am still displeased, this post included, but I'm starting to think it's inherent to mySelf, for some of the stuff I've seen published here was...well...if monkeys were given typewriters...after being drugged...and agitated...maybe by beating them with a stick while denying them bananas which are dangled in front of them...did I mention they were slightly retarded monkeys...and crossed with squirrels...also retarded...aaaaaand cut.
Despite the fact that 21,027 people watched Gurren Lagann, the top recommendation is only 13 people (in lack of a more suitable measurement unit). Which is good because the ones that are there are all wrong.
Furi Kuri is probably the most overrated anime I've seen so far. It's not funny, I don't find the animation amazing (and even if I did, I wouldn't care...), there's no real action to speak of, the same goes for the story, and all of the characters are annoying. It bears no resemblance to TTGL (or the other way around, since it's older). This was the beginning of a pattern - there are robots and it's by Gainax, so it's recommended. But I didn't really know that until later, obviously.
Code Geass, on the other hand, is great. As good as TTGL or better. But. It's nothing like it. There are robots in both. That's it.
I watched three episodes of SE before dropping it for being a mildly amusing, somewhat annoying, too cutesy and too clean shounen. That last bit is the only similarity. Both are shounen. Not even robots in this one.
Gunbuster follows that pattern mentioned before - there are giant robots and it's by Gainax. Supposedly - and by that I mean judging from the recommendations - these two should have been very similar to TTGL. They aren't. There is some scenes that would sound epic enough if you read about them, but not if you saw them. The first one is missing all the punch, though there is some emotional content. The second one is very similar in the animation department (and visually, Kamina is clearly a male Nono), but much like its predecessor (though why they even marketed this as a sequel has more to do with marketing than plot or setting), very little punch, but no emotion at all. It's pretty, but stupid and annoying. The first one had a really simple story, but it still had one, while the second one has none to speak of (hey, just like FLCL, I guess this is an impromptu recommendation) and it just goes on and on (and it's just six episodes) without ever becoming interesting. I usually drop the stuff I dislike very quickly, but I guess this one goes under I Regret Wasting Time On This column.
This is usually recommended for the gar, the hot-bloodedness of the characters. On that front it is a decent recommendation, but it's nowhere near as epic (though it does try) and there's very little emotion in it all. Still, Kamina would be good friends with Date Masamune.
Trigun is great. TTGL is great. That doesn't make recommending one to the fans of the other great. There's nothing that really connects these two.
Ouran High School Host Club
This is as far as I go. Three people recs. Obviously, these two aren't related in any way, the characters aren't even a little similar, and so on and so on. However, I am grateful to one of the people who suggested this, for it was his suggestion that made me finally watch TTGL. The argument was very appealing to me - watch this if you dislike the genre. This of course worked out much better with TTGL than Ouran (I blogged on Ouran before, if you care to know what I think of it), but still, it's a passable recommendation.
Avoid FLCL and Diebuster (Gunbuster 2). They fail on both fronts, ie they're bad and aren't similar to TTGL.
Avoid Soul Eater. It's not as bad as those two, but it's not similar AND it's just so damn average it doesn't make sense to waste time on it. Surely you can find better shounen to satisfy your shounen needs. What a pervert you are.
Watch CG and Trigun. That's it. You have to. It's mandatory. Never mind how dissimilar.
The closest to succeeding on both fronts are Gunbuster and Sengoku Basara.
If you enjoyed how TTGL played with its genre, then you might want to try giving Ouran a chance. Or not.
