Many moons ago, I had to take a "break" from watching anime. It's quoted because I think of a break as something you do not out of necessity. At that time, I had been watching six shows, but following only one - Blue Exorcist. I emphasize "following", for that was a somewhat new experience to me. Watching an anime show as it unfolds. (Not entirely new or unique, though - I had been waiting for new episodes of Hellsing OVA, and simultaneously watching No. 6, but neither as fervently as Blue Exorcist.) It was interesting enough that I started writing a post about it, but I never finished it. At the time, it seemed pointless. Well, more pointless than usual. This is just as pointless, but I still feel like it. There's stuff to throw out there. And what is to blame for that?
Texhnolyze, that's what. A show I've been wanting to watch for a very long time. Longer than that little "break" of mine. I've tried, a few times. I once quit without finishing the first episode, and once upon finishing it. So I had to rewatch it. I'm now reluctant to use the word "suffer", but I suppose it's not entirely inappropriate - suffer through the beginning yet again. Reflecting upon it, I can see where does the show's reputation as a "mindfuck" come from. It's certainly hellishly confusing at first. Why yes, I'm implying that goes away. Perhaps not completely, but it's common knowledge that ellipsis is preferable to The Completely Stupid Explanation (and if you don't understand why, here's a hint to help you on your way: Donnie Darko).
How is any of this connected? Short answer: It's not. Slightly more helpful answer: The Author.
One is for it's good to be back. Two is for Blue Exorcist was great. Three is for Texhnolyze was better. Four is for the age-old distinction between easy and fast versus slow and difficult. Five is for being able to enjoy both. Six is for lack of rhyme. Seven is for running out of...time? nah, just things to enumerate.
I was affected for half an hour when BE finished. I'm still depressed about Texhnolyze and it's been half a day. Not even a manga anywhere to ease the withdrawal symptoms. But, Steins;Gate is by the same director...
