The Humanoid

Feb 13, 2012

The Humanoid is stupid, pure and simple.  But really, that is what makes this OVA fun.  I am not ashamed in declaring my love for campy/bad entertainment.  This one hits all the things that make them fun to watch.  A complex, indecipherable storyline, that has no context or logical progression.  Animation that is sub-par and overly dramatic.  The sound is delightfully bad--hokey music, uninspired voice acting, and the required action sequence paired with a love song.  The characters are pretty forgettable and don't really develop at all. There was some weird love triangle... See full review

Wings of Rean

Feb 12, 2012

Wings of Rean starts off fairly promising.  It's got all the ingredients for an interesting clash of beliefs: military vs. political, peaceful vs. warmongering, etc, and the exploration of how two worlds could meet.  Unfortunately, the story is so confusing and nonsensical, that it is fairly impossible to discern what the heck is going on.  Who're the good guys, and who're the bad guys ought to be fairly straightforward, yet the OVA can't be bothered to make the distinction.  It's hard to tell what any of the characters' motivations are and why they're there. There is almost no... See full review

Grey: Digital Target

Jun 19, 2011

The story for this movie is minimal, at best.  It's pretty straightforward and not really the focus of the move.  It provides the backdrop for the real meat of the movie: fighting, and lots of it.  It's not gory, since most of the on-screen deaths we see are either explosions or androids, but there is a lot of violence.  The story doesn't even really conclude at the end!  If someone was looking for an interesting look at dystopian society and the nature of humanity, they would have to keep looking, as they won't find it here. The animation is pretty bad, even by 80s... See full review

The Dark Myth

Jun 24, 2010

This anime is just bad.  Not campy bad, just bad. You pretty much need a religious degree to comprehend any of what's going on.  The story itself feels like obtaining a religious degree--boring.  The story is superficially pretty cliche--a young man feels drawn to some ancient artifact, only to discover he is the reincarnation of something or another.  That's basically all I could really glean from watching it. The animation is passable, but nothing to particularly capture the eye, except maybe some of the backgrounds, which are nice.  Some of the ancient art is cool to look at... See full review
