Dragon Quest Movie: Your Story

Oct 12, 2022

...what did I just watch?  A comedy, right?  They were going for a comedy, I hope?  Or a parody?  But there's no tags for that...wait, they were serious with this movie?  They legit wanted the audience to take it seriously? Alright, so preface:  I never played Dragon Quest V, which this movie is based on.  I played the very first game (called "Dragon Warrior"), as well as VIII and XI.  So, I didn't know what to expect or what sort of story would be told.  Anyone who has played Dragon Quest V will be familiar with the story as well as its twists and... Drifting Home

Oct 5, 2022

What a mess.  I'm usually very easy to move to tears, but this movie did absolutely nothing for me...probably because the protagonists (look'n at you, Natsume) spent about 90% of the movie moping.  It got very old, very fast. While the concept was good, the execution was far from it. -- Story When investigating his old house for the "ghost kid", spurred on by a friend, Kosuke bumps into childhood friend Natsume who is taking a nap in the condemned building.  After the two get into an argument which nearly leads Natsume to falling off the roof because of the world's... Den-noh Coil

Sep 5, 2022

Reviewing this is a little difficult due to how freaking confusing this anime is...and by the time you hit around episode 20, it feels like there's an info-dump every episode which, combined with its own terms, just gets far too convoluted to keep up with. It would have been great if, after episode 3 (yes, the "intro" arc takes three episodes), the anime did a better job explaining it all...but instead, it waited until almost literally the very last moment and then crushed the viewer under the weight of all the information. Something I wish I had known upon starting to watch it (aka, some much... See full review

Digimon Ghost Game

Aug 21, 2022

Important!  As of now, the anime has not completed its run and is only 38 episodes in.  I am only writing a review right now because this series seems to be more of a "monster of the week" anime.
This anime also feels more like a giant advertisement for the Digimon Vital Bracelet (which is a great product, but still just wanted to mention that).  Just note that you can't actually control your digimon's battles on the bracelet if you like the anime enough to buy one (I've never done a versus with someone else, but AI battles are heavily RNG based). --- Story In... Dr. Ramune Mysterious Disease Specialist

Apr 9, 2021

Body parts turning into random foods?  Move over, Bugsnax! - Story The episodes are broken down into "case of the day" stories.  The first couple are only an episode in length, while the latter half of the series entertains two-part stories.  The overall theme is the same: Between strange little mischevious youkai and human stress, the issue stressing the person out often turns into a very strange mutation of a body part.  Since normal doctors can't deal with it, follow the unusual Ramune (and his assistant, Kuro) as they solve and heal patients afflicted with the... Detective Conan Movie 23: The Fist of Blue Sapphire

Feb 9, 2020

If there's something just as clockwork as time and taxes, it's a yearly Detective Conan movie.  This one was the 2019 movie (as they air during Golden Week in Japan, which is April, and then typically manage to get to other countries around October of that year.  The past few movies have taken even longer to reach foreign shores). While I certainly don't regret watching it, especially as a fan of the Kaito Kid-Conan Edogawa team up, there are at least two movies which does this concept better justice (movies 10 and 14). And if you take Kaito Kid out of this movie, the story alone (and even the... See full review

Daughter of Twenty Faces

Sep 6, 2019

For the first few episodes, this anime is amazing.  It's certainly not better than Magic Kaito (Kaito Kid), but it has its own charm, wit, and approach to the entire Phantom Thief theme. Then, a "plot" was introduced...and it crashed and burned.  Imagine picking up a book and trying to read the entire novel with not just pages missing, but entire chapters.  That's what the "plot" of this felt like. Story Chizuko Mikami is an 11 year old girl living with her aunt and uncle after her parents passed away.  Despite being the heiress to her family name and fortune... See full review

Detective Conan Movie 21: The Crimson Love Letter

Oct 26, 2017

Not one of the best movies out there for this franchise.  From beginning to end, it was slightly confusing with the amount of characters I felt was dumped on the viewer at once (not to mention terms and groups).  I also felt that it was too easy to identify the culprit. Story Nothing special.  Someone we don't know who is playing karuta is murdered in his home by an unknown person while the television station broadcasting karuta receives a bomb threat while Kogoro is there to have a consultation with a client (which of course means that Ran and the kids are there, and since it's in Kyoto... Danganronpa: The Animation

May 8, 2017

I'm going to start by saying that, though I'm aware of the VN (Visual Novel game), I hadn't played it.  That said, I did play the others and went back to play the first one after watching this anime. I'm also going to point out that I saw the anime subbed (my own preference), and if you've only seen the dub, you might want to check out the subbed version because it's a real treat (there are many well known voice actors). The majority of the review will be spoiler-free, but I'm unfortunately going to have to go into spoilers at the end because some of my major issues with the anime include some big... See full review

Detective Conan Movie 20: The Darkest Nightmare

Apr 23, 2017

I'm a little late to the party with this review, but I did finally manage to find more than the first 8 minutes of the movie.  Actually, I had completely forgotten about it up until recently since it takes so long from the time of release to someone being able to sub it. Let's jump right in. Story The movie opens up with action and a chase scene, as some data has been stolen from some unknown location.  Considering that we see the Akai and Rei/Amuro chasing the criminal (merely referred to as "that woman" for the time being), it isn't hard to deduce where the data came from. The... See full review

Digimon Adventure Tri. Movie 1: Reunion

Dec 6, 2015

I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for this review, but it has to be done. A bit of background before I have other Digimon fans screaming at me:  I love Digimon; I grew up with Digimon.  Digimon Adventure was on the list of "Saturday morning cartoons" I got up to see, and even though the dub heavily edited it (not that I knew it at the time), I loved it. Zero Two has dozens of plot holes, neglected character development, and the dub included silly lines which attempted to lighten the dark mood, but I still enjoyed it the first time it aired.  Season Three/Tamers was one of my... Digimon Adventure 02

Nov 24, 2014

I'm going to do my best to keep this review as objective as possible.  Of course, I might have to get a little subjective (though I will try to keep as many personal opinons out as possible) in the Overall section to explain just why I rated it so low. All in all, I wanted to like Digimon Zero Two, and it was a fun anime to watch.  However, and I say this all the time, there are just too many plot holes as a result of bad writing.  I'm of the opinion that one could fly a 747...no...perhaps the Millenium Falcon, through the rift of plot holes. Story Zero Two picks up three years after... See full review
