I have start watching anime when I came back from the hospital and couldnt get back to work. (April 2007) I had seen some Dragonball Z and a little Gundam Wing before that. I started with Naruto and Bleach but have seen a lot since then. I kept asking a friend to give me some good titles but since I found Anime Planet I can find it on my own.
Thx to everyone thats ever written a recommendation.
These anime revolve around a group of schoolgirls. Both are slow paced and have a lot of funny...

What made AS better for me was the drama. Where Clannad is comedy first and drama second, AS is the other way around. The first 8-9(?) or so episodes in AS continiue in the style of the original Clannad, until the Nagisa arc starts. What made it better then other similar series? I don't really know, for some reason it simply affected me more. I was watching it when it was still airing, and instead of having just one tear-jerker towards the ending, Clannad AS made me emotional during almost the entire second half.
Having that said, I also get why some people dislike it. Although they absolutely weren't in my book, certain plot twists can be seen as bad. I guess it all matters what kind of series you prefer. For me, Clannad AS was a mix of very sad and happy moments.
That was exactly why I enjoyed it. If I'm feeling depressed, I sometimes really feel the need to watch something like that, while when feeling all happy and positive, I might want to watch something equally positive, guess I'm strange like that :P
Anyway, if you liked 5cm but disliked the way it ended, you might want to give Place Promised a try. It gets a bit more boring towards the mid, but it's pretty much equal to 5cm, minus the ending.
Thanks for the comment, you strange person :P jk
If you're into the drama/romance kind of anime, I think you'll love 5cm. Go for it! ^_^
Konnichiwa!
