So, I remember watching anime before school and on Saturday mornings, when dubs were so painfully horrendous, but I loved it anyway. I remember Pokemon cardboard cutouts from the lunchables packaging, until my brother brought me my first trading cards from his work. I remember finding out what anime was and that I'd in fact been watching it for years. I remember the first friendship I had that started from our common love for it (turned into best friend status). I remember watching the subtitles, loving the voices, but fearing I'd never understand the words moving so quickly. I remember the pleasant surprise of knowing that I actually did. I remember struggling to pick out "baka" in the dialogue (turns out Inuyasha is very good for that sort of thing). And after two years now, I have the silly pride that comes with being able to pick out sentences that a Japanese gradeschooler could understand.
I have a long way to get to where I want to be, but looking back makes feel bubbly inside.
