Lucky Star

The appeal of both these series is undoubtedly the humour conjured out of sheer randomness and what should be the most unimportant aspects of life brought into the limelight. Where Lucky Star uses a lighthearted, more 'child-like' approach to the everyday questions in life, Zetsubou Sensei takes a much more cynical and self-deprecating path, but to the same high level of hilarious entertainment. Both series have a cast of high school girls, all with their own quirks and behavioural irregularities, and these are often used cleverly as the butt behind jokes. The lack of a strong story arc lends a free and easygoing feel to both series, which will provide hours of enjoyment to those looking for quick humourous amusement without feeling tied down by a more plot-oriented comedy.

Lucky Star

Minami-ke and Lucky Star are slice-of-life comedies based around the everyday lives of the lead girls. Both series turn the normal and usually-forgettable into topics of random hilarity and will remind you of real life situations where the smallest of questions have conjured hugely amusing discussions. These two series never take themselves too seriously, try to be overly funny, nor are they above making fun of themselves. The result is an easy-going and easier-to-enjoy collection of short plotlines where the viewer can pick up and enjoy from any episode. The humour is lighthearted but often heartwarming and reminds you that even the ordinary can be hilariously fun.

Great Teacher Onizuka

YOU MIGHT LIKE

School Rumble

Great Teacher Onizuka and the School Rumble series are based in a high school setting with a large host of quirky characters. The male leads, Onizuka in GTO and Harima Kenji in School Rumble, offer the cliched but lovable delinquent/bad-ass complex with a softer side. Despite the circumstances these two find themselves in, their character developments are natural and genuinely likeable because of their (overly) optimistic personalities and completely irregular methods of dealing with the situation. A difficult thing accomplished by both series is that this quality is not restricted to the leads but evident with all the characters introduced (and there are many). The plot developments are funny and the subtle changes in characters throughout the series always entertaining and absurd. If you enjoyed the sheer crazy humour brought on by the cast in one, you will love the other.

Azumanga Daioh

YOU MIGHT LIKE

School Rumble

School Rumble contains similar random humour to what is found in Azumanga Daioh (although the latter is A LOT MORE random). However, School Rumble is enticing because of its romantic-comedy themes and the sheer spiderweb of unrequited love polygons going around, allowing the writers to offer up many hilarious situations. There are also many cultural and satirical references in these series. These are recommended for their similar insanity for comedic purposes.

Lucky Star

Lucky Star is an anime also based on 4-panel manga, and thus, shares success with Azumanga Daioh in it's simplicity and non-sequiter (absurd/random) humour.Much like Azumanga Daioh, each episode is essentially standalone and filled with the quirky relationships between a close group of high school friends. Each character of the series has a distinct personality that allows for loads of crazy interactions with eachother (albeit slightly less random). If you liked that aspect of Azumanga, this is a must-watch.An excellent choice for those who want to have another lighthearted, slice-of-life series to simply pick up and enjoy without extra baggage.
