Paranoia Agent

Feb 11, 2011

I have been making my through the work of Satoshi Kon one by one (though not necessarily in order of their creation), and just when I think he can't get any better BAM! Paranoia Agent came into my hands. Although a mere 13 episodes long, the sheer amount of storyline and depth that is packed into them is just phenomenal. The series can be split into two relatively equal and fairly distinct halves, the first half involving Lil' Slugger (as he is called in the English dub- Shonen Bat in the Japanese version) bashing seemingly random people over the head with a golden baseball bat. But the whole time... See full review

School Days

Oct 6, 2010

This is a weird choice of anime for me to watch willingly, because I'm usually not into romance-based storylines. The reason I did watch it, though, is because the reviews I read told that it wasn't your typical romance series, and it has one HELL of an ending. I'm here to tell you that those reviews are right. I was actually surprised how much I got into the storyline for the first half of the series. As I said, I don't normally like romance plots but I found this one to be particularly engaging. It's basically guy likes girl, girl likes him back, another second girl who is friends with both of them... See full review

Millennium Actress

Oct 5, 2010

Brilliant movie! This is the first time I have watched anything by Satoshi Kon, one of the most well-respected directors in the industry, and I can safely say that I've fallen in love with his style already.I have to admit, I didn't entirely understand the storyline. It's execution is far more complex than its premise will have you believe. The story is basically two documentary-makers interviewing an actress, Chiyoko Fujiwara, from the olden days of cinema about her life. What makes its it all the more interesting is that the interviewers are quite literally immersed in the flashbacks, often taking on... See full review

Fullmetal Alchemist

Oct 1, 2010

What an amazing series this was!!FMA boasts one of the greatest storylines I think I've ever seen. Broad, epic and jam-packed with twists and turns it keeps you compelled for the entire 51 episodes. It's a long anime, but totally worth watching every episode. The initial premise is two brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric who go in search of the Philosopher's Stone in the hope of returning their bodies to their original form, which were disfigured in an alchemy experiment gone wrong. But the audience have no idea that the storyline will go where it did. What truly makes the storyline amazing is the characters... See full review

Cat Soup

Sep 17, 2010

Oh my God. Wow. That was my reaction after I finished watching Cat Soup.It is a very weird, very creepy, but very very beautiful short film. The storyline (or what I gathered of it) revolves around two cats, one of whom is very sick/dying/possibly even already dead- who knows? - and the other tries everything he can to make them better. They go on an... interesting... journey to the circus, across the sea, through time and to the ends of the earth, and more. Throughout there is bucketloads of symbolism, mostly extremely ambiguous. I interpreted some very interesting metaphors for nature and how its... See full review

Trigun

Sep 13, 2010

Considered an anime classic, and rightfully so, Trigun is everything you could hope for in a series. If you want to get into anime but don't know where to start, then I highly reccomend Trigun. It's a wonderful introduction to the world of anime. The storyline is, for the first two-thirds or so, episodic but in a way that still allows the characters to move forward and develop- which I think is the main reason for its frequent comparisons to Cowboy Bebop which employs a similar technique. However, around about episode 17, the plot twists in a way that I doubt anyone would see coming judging by the previous... See full review

Cowboy Bebop

Jun 19, 2010

If you like shows that blend all kinds of genres almost seamlessly, you will love Cowboy Bebop. It blends almost every genre you could think of into its story. I wouldn't have been surprised if there was a musical episode somewhere along the way (unfortunately there wasn't :P)If you like shows with loveable, fascinating characters, you will love Cowboy Bebop. The secretive badass Spike, the blunt but kind-hearted Jet, beautiful and insecure Faye, the strange and oddly flexible Ed and adorable 'data-dog' Ein all team up to scour the universe for bounties to collect. They all have such subtle development over... See full review

Hellsing

Apr 26, 2010

Overall, Hellsing is actually a pretty bad and horribly overrated series. But that's not to say it didn't have any redeeming factors whatsoever. It started off pretty well, the storyline was somewhat intriguing for the first half. But after a while, as the series began coming to a close, I felt like shouting "What the hell is happening?!" And then there's the absolute WTF abrupt ending that sort of tries to answer some of the questions very briefly, and then just... stops. The series doesn't 'end', it simply 'stops'.There are only two reasons I can think of to watch Hellsing: the awesome animation... See full review

Ergo Proxy

Feb 23, 2010

Ergo Proxy is a very confusing series, and you have a lot questions even after completing the series. But I think that's part of the magic of it.First off, I will admit the storyline is all over the place, but sort of well-structured at the same time. The first episode makes the series seem like it will be come kind of murder mystery (that's what it felt like to me anyway, knowing very little about it beforehand), but you soon learn that nothing happens like you'd expect. Through Re-L (Real? Lil? How to spell her name remains one of the show's many mysteries...), Vincent and Pino's travels they have a lot... See full review

Spirited Away

Jan 29, 2010

This is the movie that introduced me to the world of Miyazaki, and pretty much all anime. That's reason enough, I think, to call it my favourite anime movie, but I shall go into more detail in this review. The story is weird, imaginative and absolutely amazing. It starts off as the simple story of a little girl moving to a new neighbourhood, but things turn quite complex as her and her parents stumble upon a spirit world. The parents, after eating at the spirit's buffet, inconveniently turn into pigs and the little girl now has to work at a bath house in the hope of returning home safely. I've probably seen...
