Penguindrum

on

It's been a while ! But here is the final review of Mawaru Penguin Drum. I'll start by saying that the point of this review is to inform people of the series in question and I will not debate with people who thinks without valable arguments that Mawaru is crap. Mawaru Penguin Drum is one series that can ignite so many fires in arguments ; some like it some don't. I will try to be as objective as possible, but seriously I doubt that I will be able to do so. I just have to pour my unrequited love into this. The story is something so imaginative it is really difficult to even try to explain Ikuhara mad... See full review

Zombie-Loan

on

Zombie-Loan, based on the manga of the same name by Peach-Pit....A story I began to read 2 years ago, in 2009, and that fascinated me back then. I never had the opportunity to watch the anime before...and now it's done, my thoughts are a bit mixed about it. The story of the anime spans the first 4 or 5 books of the manga and it does it quite well for a 11 episodes series. It developped the major parts well and I liked it. the manga itself had good plot ideas and developpement but was slowed down by it,s horrible realization. Everytime you read a Peach-Pit work, you feel...well like drugged by all the messy... See full review

Towa no Quon 2: Konton no Ranbu

on

This a review of Towa no Quon ( Towanoquon) movie 2: Konton no Ranbu. If you're looking for the first movie review, it is available on my reviews page and I do not intend to rewrite it here. The story hasn't evolved much since Utakata no Kaben. We still can't figure the whole premise. Instead the creators decided to insert some sort of side story. I can't say it was impressive but it was not lame either. I enjoyed it. I just hope that in the next movie, we'll be able to actually see something worthwhile. The animation is yet again produced by Bones. In comparison to the first movie, the animation wasn't... See full review

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu

on

Baka to test to Shoukanjuu, a series that got a huge hype and is considered a really good series by some people. Someone recommended it to me saying it was darn funny, but seriously, I didn't laugh one minute. On the story side, Baka and test is...weak. It tells some stupid premise and uses some stupid jokes that are a remash of anime humor that I have seen in tons of different other series. So in general, the humor of the series was not original and uninspired. It was supposed to be a hilarious silly comedy, but it didn't make burst with laughter, not even close to a grin. The animation, still not the... See full review

Sailor Moon

on

In 2011, Japan celebrated the 20th anniversary of the classic Sailor Moon manga by Takeuchi Naoko. Getting the vibe, I also wanted to retaste this utter classic by reading it, but inconveniently I could not find the original manga volumes. So I decided to go with the anime. This is the review based on the first 46 episodes and NOT the entire series. Who doesn't know Sailor Moon? Hey, I mean it's a classic every good otaku should have read or seen once in their life. It tells the story of Tsukino Usagi, a clumsy and crybaby who gets, one day, to meet Luna , an envoyee from the Moon. She then gets to... See full review

Towa no Quon 1: Utakata no Kaben

on

Towa no Quon ( or Towanoquon, depending on the translation you're watching) is a 6 movies franchise produced by Bones Studios. This is the review of the first movie, Towa no Quon : Utakata no Kaben. As it a movie series, the story in the first opus is vague and a bit unexplained. I believe it could act as an introduction to the series, I guess. Otherways, it looks like an simple science fiction story with ressemblances to Darker than Black. It is way too soon to epict a judgement on the story as it is not developped enough to see the large picture. Bones did it again on the animation. Fluid, colorful and... See full review

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou

on

Last summer, I had the chance to watch Natsume Yuujinchou, Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou,s prequel, and my verdict was that it was a really charming series with heart and love into it. I also said that i was hooked enough to take a look into it's sequels, and that I did. The story of 2008's Natsume Yuujinchou ( or Natsume's Book of friends) is continued in the same line of thinking. It expands where we left out delivering in some small one-episode (for most of it) stories exactly as the first one did it. I also found these stories refreshing, calm and unbelievably poetic; I absolutely adored that. It stayed true... See full review

C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

on

When I heard that a Noitamina series focused on economy and money will air, I was definetely intrigued and wanted to find out more. As I said the story of C: The Money of soul and possibility control evolves around economy and money. It follows the struggle of Kimimaro Yoga and his persononal asset, the colorful Msyu ( or Mashu) in the financial dristcit where all sorts of people try to win back money, either for their personal gain or for other deeds. The biggest flaw of the series is that, as a Noitamina series (11 episodes) it is way too ambitious. I felt that there were lots of loose ends that could... See full review

Chrome Shelled Regios

on

When i started watching Chrome Shelled Regios, or Koukaku no Regios, I was highly anticipatingan excellent story of well made science fiction according to the coments I read. What I got was an absolute feast......of mediocrity. Here is the reason why I finally dropped this series. I couldn't stand it much longer after 10 episodes ( it gave me some sort of nausea to think there is still half the series unwtached, but seriously enough wasting my time on this horrible series). You may call my review biaised but I don't give a damn. Enough of this ****. I'll start by the story. The base premise could have been... See full review

Amatsuki

on

From now on, I will be putting what I call On-the-go reviews for those series that don't really need explaining ( or because I'm way too lazy to do it completely). Amatsuki, based on the rather unknown manga of the same name, is a other series that attemps to develop a story on yet again the supernatural side of feural Japan. It it succeds? In a way yes. It is able to represent a lovable cast without emphasizing too much on the main characters. They feel natural and realistic, I liked that. The animation though was just bland and way too simple. But still, it's a studio Deen production so I knew what to... See full review

Star Driver

on

One my favorites animes of Summer 2011 is Mawaru penguindrum, so when I found out that the director of the latter worked on Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto I immediatly wanted to see it for myself. And boy it was so cool! The base story of Star Driver is a mecha-driven plot. At first I was reticent to continue to watch it because of that reason, but I soon learned to see Star Driver for what it really is. For me the series is defined by a slice of life series parodying the mecha and magical girl sub-genres. It is deliberatly ingenous, creative and original. And I had no idea mecha could be as fun since... See full review

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

I won't start by telling FMA or Fullemetal Alchemist' history. I reckon almost every otaku out there know at least this franchise by name alone. I haven't seen the original anime series and I haven't finished reading the manga so I won't compare brotherhood with it's predesessor. Instead I will review rationnally and will not diverge in fanlove. If I am a Fullmetal diehard fan? No. If I loved Brotherhood? HELL YEAH. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood tells in a space of 64 episodes the tale of a 28-volumes manga series. At first I didn't believe that the creators would be able to pull out such a feat... 07-Ghost, based on the manga by the same name, is one of those series you have to take with a pinch of salt. I did not read the original material and thsu I will not review this series as it should have been but exactly as I saw it. The story, at base is an effective one with plenty of good plot ideas. Don't get me wrong: the original base of the series is solid, but the character developpement ruined it all.The series is overwhelmed whit negative issues; some of them orchestrated by the lousy and cheap animation but most of the by plot issues that REALLY bugged me off. One major one: the main villain of... See full review

So here is the first complete in a long time folks! When looking in the Noitamina credit sheet, as always, I found this title, Hataraki Man. I decided to give it a go. My first surprise was the character design. It was evidently made by none other than Ano Moyoco. Her mature womanly style also ravished me because I knew right away that this show is gonna be something. I know Ano's style can turn away people but the lady here is a genius that I absolutely adore. She can write about evry type of story and any king of genre and she actually succeeds at it. Excellent song that truly fits the Death Note atmosphere. The visuals are purely genius work. They managed to represents all the important keys of the series without feeling like a slideshow. And the subtle symbolism here and there? Absolutely marvelous. One of the best openings I have ever seen executed with mastery and intelligence. 2) What's up people? by Maximum the Hormone. Chobits

on

Chobits is one of Clamp's most famous works. Apart from the romance it tells, it also teaches a great lesson of philosophy. The story is simple and quite well thought. Chobits is an old show of 2002. Still, Madhouse still win with it's nimation. Nowadays, Chobits animation is ok, but in it's original time it should have been simply gorgeous. The sound is ok. An effective techno pop soundtrack with solid voice-acting. Sugita Tomokazu, even if am no fan of his, offers an exceptionnal prestation. His co-star, Tanaka Rie offers a excellent prestation too. During my browsing in anime stores, I felt attired by the bright palette and interseting design of the cover. So I decided to check the movie out to discover that it made quite a buzz in animation communities. And then came the time to buy it to see if the quality was there or it was again something with more air than skin. And here is finally the review. First of all, the story of Summer Wars is told from two different point of views: the real world and the cyber community's. It also uses completely different animation to distinct those two worlds apart. In the real world, it is a classic anime style and... See full review

Chi's Sweet Home

on

Chi's sweet home, adapted from the manga of the same name, is an atypic anime. It comes in a atypic presentation of 104 episodes of less than 3 minutes each. So everything runs fast. It is also difficult to review. The story here is quite simple. A lost kitten, Chi, is found and taken to live with the Yamada's who happen to live in a building that doesn't tolerate pets. Yup, that's a resume of the entire story. The viewer follow the little life of Chi who slowly become part of the Yamada's family. Pandora Hearts Specials

Pandora Hearts Specials consist in 9 small episodes of three to five minutes bonuses of the DVD releases of the series in Japan. I will not extend on the series story and atmosphere because I already covered that point in my Pandora Hearts review. These small animation bonuses add to the humor provided in the series with comical relief. It uses the characters antics ( almost every important character from Oz to Gil, passing by Break and Cheshire to Vincent and Echo are shown in these specials in totally different ways). It uses almost new setting like modern-era school to show the bond between characters... See full review

Pandora Hearts

on

Pandora Hearts, based on the manga of the same name by Mochizuki Jun, is often stated as Black Butler's sister series. It uses the same state of art, shabby characters and even their setting is exactly the same. Nonetheless, Pandora Hearts strikes as a highly creative series that surpasses even the ''mighty'' success of Black Butler. For me, it is way better. The story is quite elaborate even if it looks rehashed at first sight. If you give it enough time, the crappy first part with the lousy explications reveal one heck of a story with so much Alice in Wonderland references. It takes small hints instead... See full review

Having heard that there will be an OVA suite to the acclaimed Gainax's production, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, I was delighted to sit in front of my computer, happy to watch it. And oh the disapointment. There is not enough room in this 8-minute animation to fit in a story but in the actual series they manage to crawl in amusement for about 10 minutes the mini-episode. So why not here? I felt that they simply did not have a good idea to start. They simply filled the air-time with non-funny jokes of about 1 minute 30 each. A complete waste of time, money and production. Still, the graphics, though... See full review

I My Me ! Strawberry Eggs is one of those underrated anime that people usually avoid to watch. A shame because this little series highly surprised me. The story is rather simple. Amawa Hibiki disguises into a woman to provide lessons at the nearby all-girls professorate school. In this genre of premises, you usually expect some sort of ecchi crap with a pervert main character. Surprisingly, in this series, the main character is NOT a hentai otoko. The comic relief was well made and I passed a good time watching it. I particularly liked the otaku room and characters ( is it me or the anime that the two girls crave on looks like Host club?!) It is a serious serious with a deep tone but that's the series highlight and what the series does best. The story is researched. XXXHolic Kei works as the continuation of the fisrt season. It spreads on 13 episodes instead of 24 like it's predecesor. It develops manga chapters from volume 8 to 13. And again, like the first season before it, it completely put aside the links with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. In the paper version, both series have important links to each other. XXXHolic is one of the first manga I ever read. I started it 5 years ago and I am proud to say that I'm still one impressed fan. It is one of the most notable from it's creator, Clamp. It was with adversion that I started watching the animated version. And I say I am surprised. The story consist here of small cases of one episode ( and rarely two episodes). You star and finish the little case in one single episode. It is great for me who don't really enjoy case-driven series. At the end of the series last episode, fans will rejoice because one OVA was set out to be released.
