The Wallflower

Dec 10, 2009

Story: 7 Every high school has at least one female Goth student, but apparently these girls are not born with the Goth mindset. In fact, Yamato offers a great explanation for the appearance of a Goth persona: all it takes is for a guy to tell a nice girl (who probably happens to like him) that she is ugly, and oh by the way, he wants nothing to do with her. This negative response from the guy will consequently send the girl into a downward spiral of introversion, obsession with mannequins, skulls, horror films, and all things dark. The above events underscore Sunako’s transformation from... See full review

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Dec 10, 2009

Story: 9.5 I think I started to watch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya about three or four times, got into the first five minutes of the first episode, and thought to myself how the premise seemed really lame and was generally poorly presented; I also wondered why my brother was so ecstatic when he told me to watch The Melancholy of Haruhi. When I finally forced myself to watch through the end of the first episode, I realized I was going to be in for a humorous and off-the-wall experience to say the least. (In hindsight, if you pay close attention to the opening of the first episode, it is amazingly... See full review

Mushishi

Dec 10, 2009

Story: 9 Mushi, as pointed out by the main character Ginko, have a distinct dynamic with humans: “there are those who fear them and those who like them.” Also, I should add, there are those who can’t see mushi at all – this  leads to the question: which is worse, being able to see something that could potentially harm you, or being completely oblivious to what is quite possibly some of the craziest stuff happening in nature?  Mushishi’s story is entirely episodic in nature, as it follows the travels of Ginko as he moves from place to place to avoid... BLAME!

Dec 10, 2009

Story: 1.5 Honestly, I felt a bit like Towelie as I watched Blame! (man I have no idea what’s goin’ on.) Seriously though, at first I got worried that the lack of story had something to do with me – maybe I just missed something; I mean, it was kind of late when I watched this series. The truth is, Blame! seems to choose some buzzwords (e.g. megastructure,) and string them together, so that we can all pretend that a plot exists.  Unlike other cyberpunk anime which sometimes leave gaps early on and fill them in periodically throughout the series, Blame! leaves its gaps wide open... Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Dec 10, 2009

Story: 8.5 The year is 2030 AD, and the available technology is enough to make me think that it is pretty likely that a non-oil alternate energy source must have been discovered prior to 2030, although that is pure speculation. Watching SAC made me realize that I should not bother with lasik eye surgery, and just find myself a pair of those sweet prosthetic eyes (Yes! I can finally return to 20/20 vision, with a guidance system and some other features to boot.)  The futuristic setting surrounds an elite group of law enforcement agents known as Section 9, headed by Motoko (a.k.a. The Major)... See full review
