For all that I heard of how great The Rose of Versailles is, I was bored. I felt a bit bad being bored at a show that everyone else on the internet seems to love (as usual), but watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes has taken away this guilt by doing everything that Rose of Versailles was trying to do but better. (In other words, it is not that I can't appreciate what Rose of Versailles was aiming to do, but that it wasn't doing it well enough for me to enjoy it.)
For you see, Rose of Versailles is overblown in its narratives of political intrigue. When characters are shocked, we get the dramatic freeze frame. LOGH doesn't pull any of this crap, it just tells the story. Its the same deal with the way that LOGH deals with its themes of the injustice of a monarchy and the ways that power corrupts the nobility. LOGH does it subltler, so that I, as the viewer, don't have to roll my eyes every three minutes at the dramatic piano chord that plays as the camera zooms on Oscar's face.
Just an observation.
Oh, and war. War makes things interesting too. But my point is that LOGH is better than Rose of Versailles even comparing them stictly in terms of the themes and plot devices that they both contain. Madame du Barry from Rose of Versailles and the Marquise de Benemunde from LOGH play similar roles in their respective shows, and yet I enjoyed Benemunde's arc much more despite having seen almost the same arc in Rose of Versailles, due to the aforementioned lack of freeze frames, and also to the fact that LOGH introduced and did away with her in one episode, as opposed to Rose of Versailles, which spent a large portion of its first half just on Madame du Barry, who, important as she may have been to that time period, was not that important.
