A collaborative effort where classic Studio Ghibli themes are turned metal. Hell yeah motherfuckers!!
When I heard about this news I thought WTF? Would Miyazaki really allow this? His family friendly, heartwarming (apart from say Grave of the Fireflies :|) movies bastardised by Lucifer himself? But seems he has, and to the benefit of metal/anime/music fans like myself everywhere (we're like a niche within a niche).
I have to say the music sounds pretty damn freaking awesome. Quality arrangements and musicianship as well. The recording quality is professionally metaltastic. A key is that the main melodies of the original songs are kept intact, making the metal versions easily recognisable, but infused with metallic energy, super riffage, crazy drumfills and face melting solos. Love it.
If you're not a metal fan but are open-minded enough you may learn to appreciate it. That said, I'm sure there are many that will consider it a travesty. For me it's a no brainer, so freaking awesome!!
The project was under the direction of Coroner Records, an Italian record label. The main bands which cover the songs are Italian (Disarmonia Mundi and Destrage to name a couple) and Japanese (Blood Stain Child).
Currently my favourite tracks are: Tonari No Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) - Disarmonia Mundi feat. Sophia Aslanidou, Gake No Ue No Ponyo (Ponyo On The Cliff) - Destrage feat. Yoko Hallelujah, Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) - Living Corpse feat Yoko Hallelujah and Nausicaa requiem (Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind) - Neroargento feat. Yoko Hallelujah.
I strongly suggest you check this out! It's brilliant!
Saw that on ANN, the Totoro theme made me smile :p
