STORY: So far the story is confusing and hard to follow. They introduce characters and then say, " Oh yeah, this character is related to this one with a long backstory that we won't introduce." I also dislike the flow of events. It seems too sudden.
CHARACTERS: As stated above the characters are somehow inexplicable related. The personalities of each character are unoriginal and boring. Also they are all oddly accepting of the main characters crossdressing.
ANIMATION: I just really, really, really dislke the way this is drawn. It looks like paper cutouts with shiny hair to me.
OVERALL: The story is confusing and sudden, all the characters are boring and the people in this anime look like weird people with shiny hair. To be honest, watch this if you like more serious animes that adress social problems in real life; but don't watch it if you like funny anime with straightforward plotl-ines.
P.S. I honestly see no future for this anime in today's society... Meaning I can't see it reaching 26 episodes or releasing a second season.
(Review for Hourou Musuko.)
Jiro does make a point the story is not easily fluent for me, it just skips to scenes and not easy to follow! I am on episode 3 and I still get lost on the plot.
I have no clue what the character relations to each other are and if I missed anything relating to the story. Of course judging by episode 1 is a little too early which is why I am still carrying on watching it. However at the moment I am so lost in the story.
I agree, the anime is confusing, misses allot of introduction and skips many important events...
My advice: READ THE MANGA!.... You really should read the original to understant this, or if you want to get a feel for the characters.
The main reason the anime is so confusing is because it starts during volume 5, in my opinion skipping the most interesting events (and the explanations as to why who feels what).
EDIT: I lied; the ending cinched it for me. It is in my top 3 anime, ha ha! The last 3 episodes were jam packed with emotion.
I agree with Kami. Although the anime IS slow moving (I'm on episode 10 and I can say that it is DEFINITELY slow moving, ha ha!) it leaves a lot of room for character development. Because the plot isn't some big, crazy plot like 'Outlaw Star' or other animes, this anime is relying on character development, which is the reason that it is slow moving. It is also steady paced.
I don't know about you, but I hate it when animes rush through things and then lull through other parts, but this anime has a nice, steady pace. It's a bit on the slow side, but as I said before, it has to be that way because the viewer has to form a personal relationship with all of the characters.
This anime is about the human condition and individuality. In Japan, they place a lot of emphasis on conformity; this is why they have strange sects - like the Ganguro sect, for example; it's almost like the sects are cut off from society and known as their own entity. So, creating an anime about two children who are searching for their own comfort level in a country that places quite a bit of emphasis on being comfortable with the norm is controversial.
IMO, I wouldn't review an anime after only one episode watched. I normally will stomach 6-8 episodes of an anime (depending on it's lenght) before I make my decision. And even then, there have been arcs that will totally change my mind about a series. I guess I just mean that you have to give things a chance before placing judgement.
I will tell you this anime is not my favorite anime and not in my top 10, either. However, I can appreciate the questions it raises and the problems it solves throughout the series.
