Dragon Ball Z

Dec 22, 2010

Story:5.5/10 Dragon Ball Z is an anime that holds many fond memories for me (and probably for you too, if you're reading this review). As a kid, I found myself hopelessly addicted to the sight of watching two guys blast the hell out of each other while spewing out iconic lines like "Its over 9000!!" After all these years, however, I have finally gotten around to writing a review of this show. It pains me to say it, but after taking a good hard look at it critically, I found it simply doesn't carry the same charm it had all those years ago. Okay, maybe it does...kinda. No matter how much... See full review

Tales from Earthsea

Aug 19, 2020

Tales From Earthsea is notable for two things. One is that it's the directorial debut of Goro Miyazaki, son of the legend Hayao. The other is being the one and only Ghibli film to have garnered a negative reputation among critics. Actually, to fully discern just what went wrong with the film - and there are, indeed, many things wrong with it - it's perhaps necessary to discuss it's tumultuous history.  Back in the 1980's, the elder Miyazaki approached Ursula K. LeGuin for permission to direct an adaptation of her Earthsea novels. Initially she refused, but in the early 2000s changed her... See full review

Zoids: New Century/Zero

Feb 27, 2019

Anyone remember Zoids? The show about a mech combat sport that was on CN's Toonami block? Actually, the one that was first dubbed in the US was actually the second series, New Century. The first season, Chaotic Century, would have to wait a few years for its US release. I guess companies thought a tournament show would be more fun for kids that a show about war.

As a kid, I took a...kinda passive interest in the series. I mean, I watched it sometimes when it was on, and I enjoyed the robots (I actually had a Liger Zero toy when I was young), but it never really grabbed me the way other anime on... See full review

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Feb 16, 2019

With 2017 being quite the messy year, what with the hurricanes in the Atlantic, and the recent earthquake in Mexico, what better time to review a personal favorite disaster show of mine, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. To start, I would just like to say this: if you're a writer looking to do large-scale tragedy, or child characters, this is essential viewing. I am dead serious. Also, don't go near this show if you're not prepared to make a major emotional investment. I am not exaggerating when I say this show, particularly the final episode, gives some serious competition to Grave of the... See full review

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Apr 15, 2011

Story: 7/10 As the word on the ‘net may tell you, Code Geass is about as over the top as anime can possibly get (which says a lot, I might add). A high-energy mix of several genres, from mecha, to war drama, and even high-school drama, Code Geass is, I would say, a major train wreck of ideas and conventions. Unlike many other train wrecks, however, Code Geass possesses enough energy to carry the viewer through its numerous absurdities. To put it bluntly, Code Geass may be a train wreck, but it’s an exciting train wreck. The story revolves around a Lelouch Vi Brittania, an exiled prince of an... See full review
