New to anime, and clueless about what all the different genres mean. I started as a fan of cartoons--some of my favorites include Avatar: the Last Airbender, Batman: the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and Daria--and animated films generally (particularly Pixar and films from the "Disney Renaissance").

My interest in anime began with Hayao Miyazaki films and appreciation of the art style. I suppose studying Japanese history in college also fueled interest in the culture. Now I'm cautiously stepping into watching some anime series.

I'm hoping to watch quality series with character development, engaging plotlines, and fluid animation while avoiding series with Insufferable Simpering Anime Women With High-Pitched Voices. I have a weak spot for samurai, swords, and thrilling action sequences. Anything set in the Bakumatsu or the Meiji Restoration will also pique my interest.

Recommendations welcome.

The original Ghost in the Shell movie is easily one of my favorite anime.  If you like that the rest of the series is more of the same.

Hola! Noticed your profile from another friend on here. I envy you just stepping into anime as there are so many to choose from :D. If you are into carefree, slice of life anime I strongly encourage watching Aria the Animation and it's sequels. Added you so if you ever want to talk about anything I'm always up for it!

You're welcome(:

I'm sorry to say that I don't know any anime quite like Phantom. I wish I did though...

Also, I saw your blog post about anime women generally sucking, and I have to say that I agree. But if you're interested, I know of a couple of shows with very strong female characters. One is Katanagatari, which I see you have in your want to watch list. Nanami Yasuri is a very kick-ass character from that show. There's also one called Shikabane Hime (Corpse Princess), which while heavy on the idea that anime women have to be sexy/look nice, the girls in that show can really take care of themselves, despite having to have a contracted monk provide them energy. One more is called Skip Beat!, which includes one of my favorite anime women EVER. Though at first she is ruled by her feelings for someone who secretly hates her, she doesn't let him destroy her once his feelings are revealed. Instead, she does her best to succeed in the entertainment industry, and ultimately get revenge/throw it back in his face.

Sorry for the long reply, but I hope my recommendations help you out. I'm sorry if they seem a bit childish, or if you feel they would appeal more to someone younger than you. Often times I forget that not everybody is 17 years old..Heh (:

Wound up on your page after review hopping, and I saw you mention taking recommendations. I think (looking at the animes you've seen) you should give "Last Exile" a chance. It's my all time favorite anime, and despite a lackluster ending, it is incredibly unique, brilliant, and fun :]
