He is My Master

Jan 2, 2010

-Story- The story of He is my Master is largely repetitive and boring. The same thing happens in practically every episode with little variations in between them. The only thing that seemed to drive the story was making the main character of Izumi suffer, weither it be through sexual harasment or having an increase in her debts. The premise is horrible to begin with, and just sets up a predictable anime. An Otuku middle-schooler who has wealth coming out of his ass, hires some cute, underaged girls to be his maids, and he forces them to wear compromising outifits. You can see where this is going from a... See full review

Suzuka

Apr 12, 2010

-Story-The story of Suzuka was driven mostly on the idiocy of the characters. There were some unique moments that I found enjoyable, but they were far outnumbered by the stupid parts based mostly on the stupidity of the characters. The most the love stories get is an awkawd love triangle between seemingly mismatched characters, and it has a missing length to it belonging to Suzuka's dead Sempai. The story would have probably been half way decent if it wasn't driven by the sheer idiocy of all the characters. There were few touching moments, or funny moments, or any moments that gave me a major emotional... See full review

Mitsudomoe

Sep 28, 2010

-Story-Mitsudomoe is a good comedy anime, with several hilarious jokes. There were several times when I would burst out laughing. There were some running gags, as there are in any good comedy series, but there was one that annoyed me a bit. Mitsudomoe had a tendency to rely too heavly on misunderstanding jokes where two people are having a conversation but they are talking about different subjects. One character would almost always be talking about something sexual, and the other would talk about something innocent. These kind of jokes were funny at times, but they would dominate all the jokes in parts of... See full review

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Mar 11, 2012

Recently I have really gotten into the works from Studio Ghibli, and Castle in the Sky was on my list so I decided to watch it. -Story- The story is very interesting and intense. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with the action, but it is also endearing for the heartwarming scenes that it has. Throughout the film I felt very emotionally invested in the film. I cared about the characters and what happened to them, which is the mark of an excellent film. The story starts out with this boy named Pazo who catches a girl who floats out of the sky named Sheeta. The story follows these two as they go on an... See full review

Girls Bravo

Apr 11, 2011

-Story- There were some good things with the story, and there were some bad things. I did like how crazy things got throughout the series with the antics of the various characters, especially Miharu, and I also liked how even when the series did a common episode theme that seems overdone, like the hot springs episodes, they were able to spin it in a new way that was interesting. However I did find that the story was moved along by fanservice far too often, and the fanservice got way to formulaic. Its not that I think that there was too much fanservice, its just that its not good when it is the only thing... See full review

Whisper of the Heart

Apr 21, 2012

-Story- While I feel that the story was not as good as some other Studio Ghilbi films, it was still a decent plot and an interesting story. It was a story that was based more on real life than most Studio Ghilbi films, but it was excecuted well. Its basically a story about growing up as we follow the Junior High student Shizuku as she deals with issues of love and finding out more about herself. This is also one of the few Studio Ghilbi films that has romance as a critical part of the story, and for the most part it was excecuted well, except the romance got complicated with all of the crushes the side... The Secret World of Arrietty

Feb 27, 2012

When I first saw the poster for this movie in the lobby of my local movie theatre, I was excited to see another Studio Ghilbi film. I went and saw the movie while I was home on Spring Break, and I was not dissapointed at all by The Secret World of Arriety. -Story- I found that the story was quite interesting and for the most part it was able to keep my attention. The main plot is about this boy named Sho (Sean in the English dub), who is very sickly, so he goes out to the country to his mother's old house to get some rest before he has his surgery. Meanwhile there is a family of Borrowers living... See full review

Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu!

Mar 5, 2011

-Story- Overall the story and jokes in Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu were quite good, and largly keeping the spirit of the first season. In fact in some cases the jokes here were better than the jokes in the first season, as they had a wider variety of topics, and I felt that the jokes were just funnier in general. In this season we also get to explore the universe of Mitsudomoe a bit deeper, as we get to meet othere teachers, and explore the relationship between the triplets and Sugisaki and the other girls in the class. In many ways this season is an improvement and an extension of the previous season. However... See full review

Princess Mononoke

Jun 14, 2010

-Story-The story in Princess Mononoke was a very entertaining story, and it had a very important message about our impact on the environment. The Story did seem a little too slow in some parts, and other parts were boring, but for the most part it was good. I like how no one really is the bad guy, but all the characters are serving the interests of themselves or their own kind. There is no good and evil, just opposing sides in a conflict. -Animation-Absolutely a work of Art. the backgrounds were stunning, the characters were great, and all the little things made it look like a living and vibrant... Eiken

Apr 22, 2010

-Story-There was a storyline? really? The storyline of Eiken is hard to follow or even be aware of due to it being interfered with the constant fanservice. I find the problem with most ecchi animes is that they focus too much on making sexual jokes and situations, and they forget about the story. Sure, they ecchi moments are nice, but without a story to put them in context, It becomes a "lets see how many panty shots we can fit into 30 minutes" contest. That is the problem with Eiken, it has a decent story, but it is drowned out by the constant fanservice. I think that if the fanservice and ecchi... See full review

Green Green

Apr 21, 2010

-Story-Green Green is an anime that was designed specifically to get a young male audience, and no one else. The only thing that drives the story elements is the possibility of ecchi moments, and what plot that they try to put in there is largely forgotten in the first half of the series, and it doesn't make it into the series until the last couple of episodes, which are the only good episodes in the entire series (excluding the ever elusive episode 13). I also knew that the story was weak when there where 12 "real" episodes, and one of them is a crummy clip show. The only redeming quality to the... See full review

Strawberry Marshmallow

Dec 8, 2009

-Story-In Slice-of -life animes, the plot is not as critical and is more dependent on comedy instead of leaving the audience on the edge of their seats. So it may seem that the plot is non-existant in Strawberry Marshmallow, but it doesnt need a big and grand plot to be good, it needs great humor, which Strawberry Marshmallow is not short on at all. There were some instances when I just cracked up laughing at the antics of all the girls. Most of the jokes were quite funny. Also the stories in each individual episode portrayed simple things which can be a welcome change to plot driven animes as opposed to... See full review

Ghost Stories

Sep 8, 2012

-Story- I'd like to start by saying that I watched the ADV gag dub of this show, and my review is based on that version. I found that the series started out very funny, but as the show drug on, I found it less and less funny as the same jokes were made again and again. The lack of variety of the jokes really hurts the show in the later episodes. I laughed a lot in the first episode, but hardly laughed during the last episode. The gag dub format of the show works well in the begining, but the writers kept making the same jokes. If I was able to laugh as much as I did in the first episode throughout the... See full review

Otaku no Video

Mar 10, 2012

I had been wanting to watch Otaku no Video for a little while now, but it was never really high on my "must watch" list. I had heard that it was a pretty good mocumentary of otaku culture, so I gave it a look. -Story- While the story was interesting and had a great concept, it just seemed to fall flat for me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really that good either. It starts out with our main protangonist Kubo meeting an old friend he had in high school named Tanaka. Tanaka introduces Kubo to the otaku culture and he becomes addicted to the culture. This has some consequences on his life but he... See full review

Girls Bravo: Second Season

Jul 17, 2011

-Story- I will start off by saying that I enjoyed the second season of Girls Bravo a lot more than I did the first. I thought that the second season was a bit funnier than the first season, but there were only a few scenes that actually had me laughing histerically. I did like how it took more of a "slice of life" style to it in this season, and that it put more focus on the main cast of Yukinari, Miharu, Kirie, and Kazuharu. I still feel that a lot of the fanservice in the series in unneccesary and sometimes got in the way of the story, but it was an improvement over the first season. I however... See full review

Popotan

May 28, 2011

-Story- My main quarrell with the story of Popotan is that it has an extremely slow start in my book. I felt that the series didn't really get interesting until around episode 6, which is about half-way through the series. Also for a show that claims to be a comedy, I did not find it very funny. Most of the "jokes" were about the breast sizes of the various characters, and they all fell flat (no pun intended).  I was also a little upset by how there is little to no way to tell what time period the characters are currently in, which is more of a curse than a blessing in this series. I'm just... See full review

School Rumble: Extra Class

May 12, 2011

-Story- I felt that this OVA for School Rumble was pretty good and it kept with the things that make the rest of the franchise so likable. There were certainly moments that made me laugh, which the rest of the franchise is known for, but it seemed that there were just too few gags to make it as good as the first season. -Animation- The animation style is pretty much the same as the rest of the franchise, which is pretty good with no major complaints. -Characters- As with the rest of the School Rumble Franchise, the characters are the workhorse of the series. This show is good because of the characters... See full review

MM!

Dec 30, 2010

-Story- MM! proves to have a very creative plot, and it made me laugh out loud a lot at the hilarious situations that the characters find themselves in. I found the premise to be quite funny. However I did feel that it did get repetitive with the same gags covered multiple times by Mio beating up on Torou is simular fashions quite a bit. Also there were some sequences that did not seem to fit at all in the universe of the story, especially concerning the inventions of Noa. It goes from one moment everything seems completely plausible in our world and then, blam, we have things that would never happen in a... See full review

Highschool of the Dead

Oct 4, 2010

-Story-The story of High School of the Dead is you basic zombie survival story that has been done so many times already. It really is not the most unique thing, but I still found myself liking it. The action scenes were awesome, which is a very pivitol role in any zombie survival story. The scenes inbetween the actions scenes with character growth were not all that great and some of the lines were not that great. These scenes are almost like Star Wars love scenes, they just suck and it does not work there. Fortunately for High School of the Dead, these scenes don't matter a whole lot in the genre they are... Pom Poko

Jul 2, 2010

-Story-I felt that Pom Poko has an excellent story to tell and I enjoyed the documentary style that some parts of the movie were portrayed as. I also liked how there were not confirmed good guys and bad guys and there is no single triumph by any one side that decides everthing, but rather it is portrayed as a war were both sides had gains and losses. However in the end neither side really won the battle. The racoons lost their battle in some ways, but then they won in other ways. I also enjoyed how the environmental message was portrayed. It was different from the usual "You humans are assholes for... See full review

Big Windup!

Jan 18, 2010

-Story-The story of Big Windup is for the most part entertaining. I was glad that they made the whole game that they were playing entertaining, and not just the 9th inning. However there were times when the story seemed to get repetitive, and the story itself moved at an incredibly slow pace. Despite the plot being entertaining, I found it to be nothing special. There was little in the way of depth to the story either. Despite this there where times when I laughed, and times where I really felt the moment that was being presented to me. Overall, the story is entertaining, but it is a bit thin and it moves... See full review

Kino's Journey

Dec 29, 2009

-Story-Just as a word of forwarning, if you are looking for an anime with a developed plot that stretches through the entire series, then I would recommend you look to another anime than Kino's Journey. However, if you are looking for a charming, thought provoking anime, then you have found a great anime for that. Kino's Journey is a slow-paced anime, because the story is the only thing that doesn't move. However it does not need to have a developed plot. Kino's Journey has enough charm to suffice for the lack of developed plot. Kino's Journey can be viewed one episode at a time, and it is not entirely... See full review

Murder Princess

Dec 4, 2009

-Story-The story in Murder Princess was very action packed and kept you on a thrill ride throughout all six episodes. However this thrill ride did have its problems, which I felt that the series needed more episodes to properly explain and portray the plot line given. I was kinda iffy about the whole cross genre aspect of the story, combining elements of fantasy, medeval, Science Fiction, and action. This may have provided a stunning story, but it did get a little too complicated. Supossedly Murder Princess takes place around 600 years after the earth was "Burned to the ground" Which I interpreted... See full review

Hand Maid May

Nov 29, 2009

-Story-I found the plot of Hand Maid May to be interesting, yet it seemed to be on shakey ground and somewhat predictable. The plot itself is broken down into two main story arcs, one when May was a small Cyber-doll, and one when May was a life sized Cyber-Doll. I found that this split made it feel like I was watching two different Animes and it gave me two conclusions, and two climaxes. After the 5th episode it felt like the anime should have ended, but it continued on. At first I thought it was going to be like the Melancoly of Haruhi Suzumiya, and offer me some lighthearted and fun episodes which could... See full review

Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts

Mar 13, 2012

-Story- I found the story of Baka and Test to be both hilarious and entertaining at the same time. There were several moments that I was laughing quite hard about. The concept of the show was also interesting. The students take placement exams and based on those they are sent to different classrooms based on ability. The best classes get the best stuff, while the worst classes get the worse stuff. If students don't like their stuff, they can challenge another class to a "Summoner Test War" to get their stuff. I feel that this premise was presented well. Mixed in with this sort of sci-fi theme... See full review

Maken-ki!

Jan 18, 2012

-Story- Maken-ki! is an anime that was never really sure what sort of show that it wanted to be. It started out as a ecchi harem anime, that tried to change into an action anime, but it ultimately failed at this. I did not find the story of the show to be all that interesting to begin with, mostly because I have seen the premise before done a whole lot better. It tries to do the "magical" harem show where all the girls have some sort of power with the guy either not having the abilities or really sucks at it. This has been done in both Maburaho and Sekirei. Another aspect that didn't work with... See full review

After falling in love with the Hetalia series, I had been wanting to watch this movie for a long while, but much like the second season of Haruhi, It kept getting pushed back and my life got busy which prevented me from watching it. But for Christmas I got the DVD for the movie as well as the first 2 seasons, so I finally decided to watch the movie. At first I was not sure how well a series of 5 minute mostly non-sequitor webisodes could become a feature length film, as it seemed like a stretch to me. Unfortunately this makes UFO Man lose his powers and now the girls have to become giant monsters themselves to fight evil monsters. Personally I did not find the story to be very entertaining at all. There weren't really any high points for me in the story and I found it to be quite dull. Humor did not do much to save it, as there was only one scene that I though was funny. Sekirei

Aug 30, 2011

-Story- I did not find the story of Sekirei to be all that interesting. Sure the action was pretty good, but I feel that the series fell short in other areas. One place they fell short on is the harem aspect of the show. I felt that the harem aspects of the show were pretty darn generic and other shows have done it a lot better. The harem parts also were really cliche as you had a lot of the standard character types in the show (The loser guy, the first girl, the lolita girl, the tsundere girl). I also felt that the parts that tried to be funny were not funny at all, and relied too much on fanservice and... See full review

I enjoyed the action that the series had as well. The story is also extremely touching as you dive into the story and learn all of the backstories of the characters and find out why they are in that world. The emotion of the story felt so real, and you could feel the hurt that the characters were feeling. I also liked how Angel Beats! made me think about life and death as well as God and religion.
