Ghost Stories

on Sep 7, 2012

-Story- I'd like to start by saying that I watched the ADV gag dub of this show, and my review is based on that version. I found that the series started out very funny, but as the show drug on, I found it less and less funny as the same jokes were made again and again. The lack of variety of the jokes really hurts the show in the later episodes. I laughed a lot in the first episode, but hardly laughed during the last episode. The gag dub format of the show works well in the begining, but the writers kept making the same jokes. If I was able to laugh as much as I did in the first episode throughout the... See full review

Whisper of the Heart

on Apr 21, 2012

-Story- While I feel that the story was not as good as some other Studio Ghilbi films, it was still a decent plot and an interesting story. It was a story that was based more on real life than most Studio Ghilbi films, but it was excecuted well. Its basically a story about growing up as we follow the Junior High student Shizuku as she deals with issues of love and finding out more about herself. This is also one of the few Studio Ghilbi films that has romance as a critical part of the story, and for the most part it was excecuted well, except the romance got complicated with all of the crushes the side... Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu

on Mar 12, 2012

-Story- I found the story of Baka and Test to be both hilarious and entertaining at the same time. There were several moments that I was laughing quite hard about. The concept of the show was also interesting. The students take placement exams and based on those they are sent to different classrooms based on ability. The best classes get the best stuff, while the worst classes get the worse stuff. If students don't like their stuff, they can challenge another class to a "Summoner Test War" to get their stuff. I feel that this premise was presented well. Mixed in with this sort of sci-fi theme... See full review

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

on Mar 10, 2012

Recently I have really gotten into the works from Studio Ghibli, and Castle in the Sky was on my list so I decided to watch it. -Story- The story is very interesting and intense. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with the action, but it is also endearing for the heartwarming scenes that it has. Throughout the film I felt very emotionally invested in the film. I cared about the characters and what happened to them, which is the mark of an excellent film. The story starts out with this boy named Pazo who catches a girl who floats out of the sky named Sheeta. The story follows these two as they go on an... See full review

Otaku no Video

on Mar 10, 2012

I had been wanting to watch Otaku no Video for a little while now, but it was never really high on my "must watch" list. I had heard that it was a pretty good mocumentary of otaku culture, so I gave it a look. -Story- While the story was interesting and had a great concept, it just seemed to fall flat for me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really that good either. It starts out with our main protangonist Kubo meeting an old friend he had in high school named Tanaka. Tanaka introduces Kubo to the otaku culture and he becomes addicted to the culture. This has some consequences on his life but he... See full review

The Secret World of Arrietty

on Feb 26, 2012

When I first saw the poster for this movie in the lobby of my local movie theatre, I was excited to see another Studio Ghilbi film. I went and saw the movie while I was home on Spring Break, and I was not dissapointed at all by The Secret World of Arriety. -Story- I found that the story was quite interesting and for the most part it was able to keep my attention. The main plot is about this boy named Sho (Sean in the English dub), who is very sickly, so he goes out to the country to his mother's old house to get some rest before he has his surgery. Meanwhile there is a family of Borrowers living... See full review

Maken-ki!

on Jan 17, 2012

-Story- Maken-ki! is an anime that was never really sure what sort of show that it wanted to be. It started out as a ecchi harem anime, that tried to change into an action anime, but it ultimately failed at this. I did not find the story of the show to be all that interesting to begin with, mostly because I have seen the premise before done a whole lot better. It tries to do the "magical" harem show where all the girls have some sort of power with the guy either not having the abilities or really sucks at it. This has been done in both Maburaho and Sekirei. Another aspect that didn't work with... See full review

Ginmaku Hetalia: Axis Powers - Paint it, White (Shiroku Nure!)

on Dec 25, 2011

After falling in love with the Hetalia series, I had been wanting to watch this movie for a long while, but much like the second season of Haruhi, It kept getting pushed back and my life got busy which prevented me from watching it. But for Christmas I got the DVD for the movie as well as the first 2 seasons, so I finally decided to watch the movie. At first I was not sure how well a series of 5 minute mostly non-sequitor webisodes could become a feature length film, as it seemed like a stretch to me. My exerience with these kind of movies being adapted from shows (mostly 30 minute shows though) to be kind... See full review

Ultimate Girls

on Oct 30, 2011

-Story- Ultimate Girls starts out when three high school girls get killed in a giant monster fight, and they are resurrected by the "good" guy UFO Man. Unfortunately this makes UFO Man lose his powers and now the girls have to become giant monsters themselves to fight evil monsters. Personally I did not find the story to be very entertaining at all. There weren't really any high points for me in the story and I found it to be quite dull. Humor did not do much to save it, as there was only one scene that I though was funny. They also tried to put in a romance story, which had no appeal to me at... See full review

Sekirei

on Aug 29, 2011

-Story- I did not find the story of Sekirei to be all that interesting. Sure the action was pretty good, but I feel that the series fell short in other areas. One place they fell short on is the harem aspect of the show. I felt that the harem aspects of the show were pretty darn generic and other shows have done it a lot better. The harem parts also were really cliche as you had a lot of the standard character types in the show (The loser guy, the first girl, the lolita girl, the tsundere girl). I also felt that the parts that tried to be funny were not funny at all, and relied too much on fanservice and... See full review

Angel Beats!

on Aug 28, 2011

-Story- I really enjoyed the story in Angel Beats!. I loved how there were sad moments and happy momments, and how they worked together to make this story great. I enjoyed the action that the series had as well. The story is also extremely touching as you dive into the story and learn all of the backstories of the characters and find out why they are in that world. The emotion of the story felt so real, and you could feel the hurt that the characters were feeling. I also liked how Angel Beats! made me think about life and death as well as God and religion. This show has a lot to say about these things, but... See full review

Puni Puni Poemy

on Aug 16, 2011

-Story- I was brought to watch Puni Puni Poemy after I finished watching Excel Saga. For the most part I felt that Poemy was pretty funny, and I found myself in various spots laughing out loud. However, I feel that too much of the humor relies too much of refuge in vularity in order to be funny, and not enough on the crazy random crap that made Excel Saga so great. I did like how the show hung a lampshade on their use of fanservice in the show, which scored some bonus points for me. -Animation- Overall the animation in Poemy is on par with that of Excel Saga, but I feel that there was a bit less effor in... Excel Saga

on Aug 9, 2011

Story I really liked all of the humor in Excel Saga, which I felt to be clever and original. I loved how seemingly random the whole thing was and there were many times when I just busted out laughing. The antics of Excel and Hyatt never cease to entertain and provide humor. I also loved all of the lampshade hanging that took place throughout the series which allowed it to get away with a lot of things by making them funny. Excel Saga even made 2 clip shows hilarious and original. Plus the diverse cast made for even more humor that could not be provided by Excel and Hyatt alone. Animation I felt that the... True Love Story: Summer days, and yet...

on Jul 23, 2011

-Story- The story of True Love Story centers around a regular guy named Yuuta, and a girl who has a crush on him. The overall story is really weak, with no redeeming qualities. The dialogue was terrible, the story was not that original, and everything just seems like the story was half-assed. Most of the story is driven by Yuuta's sister dragging him places to meet girls that she knows, and even that is boring. It is not something that is pleasurable to watch. There was nothing that made me interested in the story at all. This show tries to be a harem show without having the proper time requirements to... See full review

Girls Bravo: Second Season

on Jul 16, 2011

-Story- I will start off by saying that I enjoyed the second season of Girls Bravo a lot more than I did the first. I thought that the second season was a bit funnier than the first season, but there were only a few scenes that actually had me laughing histerically. I did like how it took more of a "slice of life" style to it in this season, and that it put more focus on the main cast of Yukinari, Miharu, Kirie, and Kazuharu. I still feel that a lot of the fanservice in the series in unneccesary and sometimes got in the way of the story, but it was an improvement over the first season. I however... See full review

Strike Witches TV

on Jul 1, 2011

-Story- Overall I thought that the premise of Strike Witches was pretty decent. I found the war against the Neuroi thing to be quite fascinating, and I have always been a fan of alternate history. However, the story seemed to take to much of a light hearted tone in the middle of the series, and then it quickly changes into a deadly serious piece, which didn't seem to fit as well with the rest of the show. Other than that the story was pretty good. -Animation- I felt that the art was quite good throughout but there were some things that I didn't find visually appealing. In parts of the show, it seemed... See full review

Popotan

on May 27, 2011

-Story- My main quarrell with the story of Popotan is that it has an extremely slow start in my book. I felt that the series didn't really get interesting until around episode 6, which is about half-way through the series. Also for a show that claims to be a comedy, I did not find it very funny. Most of the "jokes" were about the breast sizes of the various characters, and they all fell flat (no pun intended).  I was also a little upset by how there is little to no way to tell what time period the characters are currently in, which is more of a curse than a blessing in this series. I'm just... See full review

Clannad

on May 23, 2011

-Story- I found that the story of Clannad was very interesting and it was able to combine almost perfectly the balance between comedy and drama. The entire series was an emotional thrill ride, from the brink of tears moments with many of the female cast, to the jokes at the expense of Sunohara. I also liked how the series made it so that the viewer would be able to connect with the characters and feel the emotions that they had. I also liked how the ending had a solid conclusion that did not feel like a cop-out, but there are enough loose ends to make me want to watch more. -Animation- One can quickly... See full review

School Rumble: Extra Class

on May 11, 2011

-Story- I felt that this OVA for School Rumble was pretty good and it kept with the things that make the rest of the franchise so likable. There were certainly moments that made me laugh, which the rest of the franchise is known for, but it seemed that there were just too few gags to make it as good as the first season. -Animation- The animation style is pretty much the same as the rest of the franchise, which is pretty good with no major complaints. -Characters- As with the rest of the School Rumble Franchise, the characters are the workhorse of the series. This show is good because of the characters... See full review

Hetalia: World Series

on Apr 25, 2011

-Story- Even though I still found the story to be entertaining with all of the jokes and historical references that I love, it just did not seem to measure up to Hetalia: Axis Powers. I feel that Axis Powers was better than World Series. I felt that this was because of the exploration of the other countries in the series other than the main Axis and Allies characters, while it was good, it made me wish that I could watch more of the Axis and Allies. Also the jokes didn't seem to be as funny as the jokes in Axis Powers. I felt that World Series was a decent series in its own right, but it fell short of my... See full review

on Apr 24, 2011

-Story- I found that the storyline of Shuffle! to be extremely entertaining, and quite engaging to the audience. In the series there are two types of episodes, serious ones and humorous ones, and both kinds are entertaining, which I feel is a testament to the versatility of the series. In the serious episodes, the audience is immersed into the story, and the feelings that the characters are experiencing seem legitamite and real. In the humorous episodes, I found myself laughing throughout them. I also liked how the series addresses the emotional issues about harems that seem to be neglected in other Harem... See full review

The only thing that I can really say about this is that it is strange in a bad way. It seems like something that a group of art students made that were trying to make some sort of deep profound message about humanity or society or something of that nature. Your milage may vary on this one whether or not you get it or not, but I certainly didn't.

-Story- There were some good things with the story, and there were some bad things. I did like how crazy things got throughout the series with the antics of the various characters, especially Miharu, and I also liked how even when the series did a common episode theme that seems overdone, like the hot springs episodes, they were able to spin it in a new way that was interesting. However I did find that the story was moved along by fanservice far too often, and the fanservice got way to formulaic. -Story- The story of Kiyokoi is a simple love story about a high school girl who is extremely shy, who eventually overcomes this shyness and makes friends and finds love. It may not be the most original story line in the world, but the overall story was cute and somewhat entertaining. There were a couple of moments that did provide some humor that provides one with a light chuckle. Even though I did find Hiyokoi entertaining, it wasn't really that entertaining for me. -Story- The stories that make up this series, are a group of short romance stories, where the female protaganist always wears glasses. The individual stories were pretty entertaining to watch, as the story reveals the nature of each couples relationship. I would have to say that the stories did peak my interest. There were moments when the stories did seem cliched and predictable, but overall they seemed to avoid this. -Animation- The animation here is not that great, but its not that terrible either. Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu!

on Mar 4, 2011

-Story- Overall the story and jokes in Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu were quite good, and largly keeping the spirit of the first season. In fact in some cases the jokes here were better than the jokes in the first season, as they had a wider variety of topics, and I felt that the jokes were just funnier in general. In this season we also get to explore the universe of Mitsudomoe a bit deeper, as we get to meet othere teachers, and explore the relationship between the triplets and Sugisaki and the other girls in the class. I can forgive all of the dirty jokes because thats what this show is about, but I did not laugh at them all, which does hurt it in ways. The over arching story seemed interesting at first, but as it drug on it seemed that some story elements were repeated a tad too much, but this is only slight due to the emergence of other major plot points later on. -Animation- The art in Panty and Stocking is something that is unique as... However I did feel that it did get repetitive with the same gags covered multiple times by Mio beating up on Torou is simular fashions quite a bit. -Story- At first I thought that the premise to 'My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute' was pretty interesting, but as the show progressed, it kind of let me down. There are couple of things that I didn't like, like how Kirino is a total bitch to her brother despite all of the nice things that he does for her. I also did not like how Kirino writes a novel and has it made into an anime series in two episodes, but it is hardly mentioned after that. Plus I hated how the trip to America by Kirino premise was sprung upon us at the last minute when it was rarely mentioned before that she was a track athlete. The... See full review

Shukufuku no Campanella

on Oct 11, 2010

-Story-I did not really find the story of Shukufuku no Campanella all that good. At first it seems like a lighthearted fantasy story that one falls in love with for being charming, but halfway through it tries to become a story that leads up to a final showdown, which just didn't work with this series. It also had one of those annoying endings with some lame sappy morale that all of the characters learn in the end and then everything is peaches and cream from that point on.
