Highschool of the Dead

Oct 4, 2010

-Story-The story of High School of the Dead is you basic zombie survival story that has been done so many times already. It really is not the most unique thing, but I still found myself liking it. The action scenes were awesome, which is a very pivitol role in any zombie survival story. The scenes inbetween the actions scenes with character growth were not all that great and some of the lines were not that great. These scenes are almost like Star Wars love scenes, they just suck and it does not work there. Fortunately for High School of the Dead, these scenes don't matter a whole lot in the genre they are... Mitsudomoe

Sep 28, 2010

-Story-Mitsudomoe is a good comedy anime, with several hilarious jokes. There were several times when I would burst out laughing. There were some running gags, as there are in any good comedy series, but there was one that annoyed me a bit. Mitsudomoe had a tendency to rely too heavly on misunderstanding jokes where two people are having a conversation but they are talking about different subjects. One character would almost always be talking about something sexual, and the other would talk about something innocent. These kind of jokes were funny at times, but they would dominate all the jokes in parts of... See full review

Hanoka

Sep 18, 2010

-Story-The story in Hanoka is a jumbled up mess and it is really incoherent. It is also a sterotypical story about a war between humans and aliens over a planet. There were a million moments in which the story followed cliches to the letter. There is minimal originality in this story. Also the ending has got to be the worst ending I have ever seen to an anime series. Terrible does not even begin to describe Hanoka. -Animation-Hanoka was the very first full fledge anime series to be animated completely in Flash. This is a terrible mistake. The flash makes the animation look unnatural, especially when viewing... See full review

K-On!

Aug 23, 2010

-Story-With a series like K-on!, there is an over arching story, but the focus is more on the individual episodes, which I really enjoyed. There was some pretty good humor too and the adventures of the light music club were really great. K-on! kind of reminded me of Lucky Star in some ways, with its episodic feel and its light, humorous tone to it. One thing that I didn't like was sometimes when there was an episode that felt a little too simular to another one in the series, mostly the 2 episodes where they went away to a beach resort in the summer, but other than that it was pretty good.-Animation-The art... Otoboku: Maidens Are Falling For Me!

Aug 1, 2010

-Story-While the story did have its few funny moments, they were rare and made me rarely laugh. The story itself did not seem to have any focus at all, with it switching between episodic and linear story. Also the main point of the plot in the beginning of the series is completely lost by the end of the series. I was also upset by the random super-natural element in the story, when there is no reason to believe that the super natural have any hold on the world of the series, and the ghost seemed completely out of place in the show. I also got tired of the antics of the series by around the 3rd or 4th... See full review

"Bungaku Shoujo" Kyou no Oyatsu: Hatsukoi

Jul 25, 2010

-Story-The story in this OVA was a simple yet very satisfying story. It explored the greatness of literature and fiction stories, and made it good. The story is about a boy and a girl in the literature club, and the girl has an "appetite" for stories, and the boy delivers the goods. The conversations that they have leave the audience wondering what their relationship is, which is very entertaining. Sometimes the simplest plots are the best.-Animation-The animation in Bungaku Shoujo is very good. It takes advantage of the symbolism which is absolutely neccesary in order to tell the story. In a way... See full review

Stellvia of the Universe

Jul 11, 2010

-Story-I found the story of Stellvia of the Universe to be very compelling, especially in the last few episodes. Before that however, I felt that the creators had trouble deciding on if the series was a slice of life type story in space or a hardcore science fiction, and it felt that the storylines for both aspects got in the way of each other and prevented either one from growing to a meaningful level. I feel that the hardcore science fiction aspect had the stronger story to it, and that the slice of life in space should have played more of a secondary role in the series. However, I was pleased when they... See full review

Working!!

Jul 8, 2010

-Story-One of the best things about the story of Working!! is that is has several small stories that work in harmony with each other throughout the series. There are several continuing stories that some may call running gags, but it all works together. Another strong thing is that the series is quite funny in several places, unlike some shows were there is only two or three laughable moments in the entire series, Working!! is a laughing riot. The comedy is great and I found myself laughing out loud during my viewing of it. -Animation-There are certainly better animated and artistic shows, but the style of... See full review

Romeo x Juliet

Jul 2, 2010

-Story-To say that RomeoXJuliet is based on the play Romeo and Juliet is just sheer insanity. There are only two things that this series and the play have in common is the characters and that it was a tragedy. But even with this series, and knowing that this is a completely new story, the story itself did not hold up well. I felt that when it was made, they changed the storyline at least a dozen times and that the story introduced in episode 1 has very little corrilation with the conclusion at the end of the series. This series suffers from severe plot ADD, with constant jumping around with very weak links... See full review

Pom Poko

Jul 2, 2010

-Story-I felt that Pom Poko has an excellent story to tell and I enjoyed the documentary style that some parts of the movie were portrayed as. I also liked how there were not confirmed good guys and bad guys and there is no single triumph by any one side that decides everthing, but rather it is portrayed as a war were both sides had gains and losses. However in the end neither side really won the battle. The racoons lost their battle in some ways, but then they won in other ways. I also enjoyed how the environmental message was portrayed. It was different from the usual "You humans are assholes for... See full review

Kiki's Delivery Service

Jun 21, 2010

-Story-For the most part the story of Kiki's Delivery service was pretty good. There were a few things that I did not like about the story. The pacing was very slow in an almost unbearable way. They seemed to drop an important plot element right in the middle of the story, which was when Kiki lost her powers, and I felt that the ending was not vey satisfactory. However I did find that the story was for the most part touching, entertaining, and it gave an important lesson. It also show a very rare conflict that is portrayed in all media forms and that is the struggle that Kiki has with her own self... See full review

Yamada's First Time: B Gata H Kei

Jun 19, 2010

-Story-I usually do not like ecchi anime, but B Gata H Kei does the one thing that will make me like an ecchi anime, and that is to make it funny. I was laughing throughout the anime. The jokes did not get stale over time as there where constantly new jokes throughout. I did not like how the anime diverged from the original idea of Yamada having sex with 100 guys with the introduction of Kanejou as a rival to Yamada, and Kanejou trying to steal Yamada's boyfriend. I also did not like how the role of the Childhood friend was delegated to such a minor role. I would have much prefered Miyano and Yamada... See full review

My Neighbor Totoro

Jun 17, 2010

-Story-The weakest link in the movie My Neighbor Totoro is definately the story. For the first half of the movie, I was completely bored out of my mind. I don't mind a little slice of life anime, but it either has to win me over with humor or charm, which My Neighbor Totoro, does not deliver on. However, things get interesting towards the second half of the movie, and the second half ultimately saves the film for me. The story that was set up so boringly in the first half of the film comes alive and takes on a form of its own and it tugs at the heartstrings. If they made the first half of the film more... -Story-The story in Princess Mononoke was a very entertaining story, and it had a very important message about our impact on the environment. The Story did seem a little too slow in some parts, and other parts were boring, but for the most part it was good. I like how no one really is the bad guy, but all the characters are serving the interests of themselves or their own kind. There is no good and evil, just opposing sides in a conflict. -Animation-Absolutely a work of Art. the backgrounds were stunning, the characters were great, and all the little things made it look like a living and vibrant... Strawberry Marshmallow OVA

Jun 1, 2010

-Story-This series makes an excellent continuation of the original anime. The Strawberry Marshmallow OVA is a very entertaining series to watch, and it makes a perfect choice for a short, quick, series to watch. It is full of humor and made me laugh out loud at some points. I also feel that it kept in spirit with the original series. However we have seen this sort of stuff done better in the original Strawberry Marshmallow series and this OVA does nothing to enhance the franchise itself. But I was entertained and is well worth the watch.-Animation-The animation in this OVA was nothing to rave about but... See full review

Barefoot Gen

May 24, 2010

-Story-This is a very depressing story. It is a story about a boy who lived in Hiroshima in 1945, so we know from the lessons of history that this is not going to be a happy story. When the atomic bomb is dropped, Gen experiences the untimely deaths of his father and brother and sister, leaving him and his mother to try and survive the living hell that is post atom bomb Hiroshima. This is a very deep story, and it really makes one think. It makes one wonder "Why did the United States drop the atom bomb?" and "Was it really worth all the suffering that was caused by it?". Throughout the film, we get to learn about the past of all of the main characters, and what happened to them that caused them to be homeless. There are several very touching moments in the movie and there where also some parts that made me laugh. This tale is littered with touching moments and miraculous occurances. The story was very good. Some parts of it where slightly predictable and there where a few cliches, but other than that it was a very good... See full review

Sleeping with Hinako

-Story-I thought that Training with Hinako was a boring as it could get, but boy was I wrong. Sleeping with Hinako has got to be the most boring anime that I have ever seen. I thought that exersise was boring, but watching someone sleeping is just as boring as it gets. Sure we get to see a dream or two of Hinako's, but most of the time we are just hearing her sleeping. Training with Hinako

Apr 26, 2010

-Story-Even though I cannot give my usual complaint of the fanservice getting in the way of the plot, which I cannot because the fanservice is the plot. But beyond the fanservice as the only thing that gives Training with Hinako a reason to exist, it was extremely boring. I could not believe how boring it was. It was more boring than the "In to the West" unit I had in my A.P. American History class, and believe me that was really boring. I find excersise boring to begin with, what makes them think that it is going to be any more entertaining watching some faceless female character with large boobs... See full review

Apr 22, 2010

-Story-There was a storyline? really? The storyline of Eiken is hard to follow or even be aware of due to it being interfered with the constant fanservice. I find the problem with most ecchi animes is that they focus too much on making sexual jokes and situations, and they forget about the story. Sure, they ecchi moments are nice, but without a story to put them in context, It becomes a "lets see how many panty shots we can fit into 30 minutes" contest. That is the problem with Eiken, it has a decent story, but it is drowned out by the constant fanservice. I think that if the fanservice and ecchi... See full review

Green Green

Apr 21, 2010

-Story-Green Green is an anime that was designed specifically to get a young male audience, and no one else. The only thing that drives the story elements is the possibility of ecchi moments, and what plot that they try to put in there is largely forgotten in the first half of the series, and it doesn't make it into the series until the last couple of episodes, which are the only good episodes in the entire series (excluding the ever elusive episode 13). I also knew that the story was weak when there where 12 "real" episodes, and one of them is a crummy clip show. The only redeming quality to the... See full review

-Story-Since Cat Soup is such a non-sequitor and expiramental anime, it is hard to review in conventional terms. There really is no story to rate, but Cat Soup is so interesting and entertaining, that holding the lack of story against it is a crime unto itself. Cat Soup is probably the strangest thing that I have ever seen, even more so than Fooly Cooly, which is extremely tame in comparison to Cat Soup. Fooly Cooly is a housecat, and Cat Soup is a female tiger in heat with an extremely bad case of rabies. Suzuka

Apr 12, 2010

-Story-The story of Suzuka was driven mostly on the idiocy of the characters. There were some unique moments that I found enjoyable, but they were far outnumbered by the stupid parts based mostly on the stupidity of the characters. The most the love stories get is an awkawd love triangle between seemingly mismatched characters, and it has a missing length to it belonging to Suzuka's dead Sempai. The story would have probably been half way decent if it wasn't driven by the sheer idiocy of all the characters. Apr 10, 2010

-Story-The thing that I love about Hetalia is that it takes the stories of History, and gives it to the characters, and makes it funny. Hetalia is one of the few Web Animes that I actually find really enjoyable. Most of the story is about history portrayed through the personifications of the nations of the world. Since it is a web series, it has to make due with 5 minutes of time for each episode, which proves to be a great amount to make each episode a joy to watch. The humor is great through out the series, and provides a good laugh into some of history's darker times. The series focuses around the... See full review

It makes the you feel like you are a part of the story of these characters. It may be a sad story, but it makes one ponder, especially if you are an American like me. For an American audience, it brings a new prespective of World War II to us. It makes one realize the kind of suffering brought on by the war, and the firebombing of Japanese cities. -Story-The story seemed to be pretty good for the most part, and provided me with some good entertainment. I did like the idea of Humanity fighting for its survival, even though it is not an original concept. However I did not like the rogue scientist idea, and thought that it had been overdone and stereotypical. What bothered me the most was how ridiculous the enemies of humanity looked. I would have prefered it if they had not been shown. -Story-The story in So-Ra-No-Wo-To is just simply amazing. It successfully made the series episodical while at the same time keeping them in the same story line that had a satisfying climax. The premise is not original per say, but the way that they portray it is. I found the story to be quite brilliant. It kept the audience engaged, and it was full of energy. -Story-The Story in Azusa will Help! seems on the surface to be a half way decent story, but a closer look reveals how it isn't that great. There where several key moments in the plot that just happended for no reason. It seems to me that the story was hurried through at some parts, and it makes it less comprehensible. However, there was a decent plot that was given enough time to make sure that it was explained well enough so that you do not have to stop and say "What the...?". This results from the fact that the main character Nayu, is completely obsessed with underwear, and having to deal with the knowledge that someone is getting turned on somewhere by 7th grade girls, which is really creepy. It explores some of the deepest parts of the human experience, and it makes you think. The concept itself is preey good too, and the idea of corperate warfare seems like it could actually happen one day. The Kildren provide a decent perspective of the human experience, so that we can explore it from a whole new light. However, If you are into lots of action, then this is not the movie for you.
