Didn't get into anime until my third year of college, while pursuing a humanities degree with a film emphasis, so I tend to think about anime differently than most. Taught English in Japan for a few years - anime accelerated my Japanese listening comprehension and given me some insights into Japanese culture - though it led me into misunderstandings as often as not!
