1. FIRST & 2. FINAL COMMENTS
1. First Impressions
For the first time ever I've decided to give my opinion on the first 1 or 2 episodes of some of the Summer 2013 Anime along with a rating. Read on for Free!, Silver Spoon, Hakkenden 2nd Season, The World God Only Knows, WATAMOTE, Makai Ouji, Gatchaman Crowds and many more!
Free! Iwatobi Swim Club episodes 1 & 2
Episode 1 and 2 are great. Never once did I look to see how many minutes were left of the episodes. Looking at how many minutes/seconds are left is usually a sign I'm not loving an anime. I really like the animation (KyoAni are brilliant! <3), art, music (OLD CODEX - Rage On OP <3), characters and cast... (Mamoru Miyano as Rin Matsuoka <3) It's almost simply perfection. I just hope story wise it can deliver fully. I'm liking the direction it is going in so far though so I'm definitely in this to the very end unless it goes downhill fast. I doubt it will though!
I might be getting too ahead of myself but this could be a solid 8 not a 7.whatever/10. I'm not sure if Free! will be able to get a 9/10 from me though. It isn't quite Kuroko no Basket standard yet. Ugh, I hate to mention Kuroko no Basket and I don't want to compare them but that's an anime I have rated 9/10 and it's the only one that I can use as an example to give you guys an idea of what I think of the show. I can't really compare it to Death Note or Code Geass, can I? :-D
I recommend people watch Free! as it is awesome. I know some guys and girls may not want to due to the fanservice but I put up with it in some shonen/harem when girls can be used simply for that. It isn't all that in your face with Free! I don't think. After all, swimming does require people to take their clothes off, right? Normal people don't swim in their clothes, do they? Well, they have swimwear which are clothes but you get the idea... *shakes head at my own rambling*
Also people, how amazing is the ED Splash Free!? Catchiest song EVER! I think I'll write a more in depth review for Free! Iwatobi Swim Club in the future. I really am loving it so far! I could go on and on about it... And I'm not even a fangirl (Honest!).
Silver Spoon episode 1
The first episode of Silver Spoon was good! It's strange watching it because I've been reading the manga but I'll get used to it. It's really great to see it all in colour and animated with sound too. I like the casting of Ryouhei Kimura as the main character Yugo Hachiken. I just hope it can live up to the manga. 7.4/10 for the first episode. I rate the still ongoing manga 8.7/10 so far. If you didn't know that an egg came from the arse of a chicken then you may get put off eggs like Hachiken!
Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East 2nd Season episode 1
There isn't much to say about this. I LOVED the first season and gave that an 8/10 and I love this season so far. I miss the old OP and ED though but I'll grow to love the new ones. 8/10
The World God Only Knows: Goddesses episode 1
I. Am. Confused. It looks like I'm going to have to read The World God Only Knows manga since a lot has been skipped in the anime. I'm not pleased. I can't believe they skipped like a whole season worth of material! So now I apparently have to read from around chapter 42 to around chapter 114. TWGOK isn't something I fancy reading though...
-sigh I feel sorry for all the girls who didn't get their intro animated. I bet they are really jealous of the others now! Fight, fight, fight...!
Recorder and Randsell Mi episode 1
It was fine but not the funniest episode. The animation is different to the previous two seasons but I'll get used to it. I didn't like the non-animated ED but oh well. I still find the episodes too short but it'll be a fun 3 minutes each week. I only recently watched the first two seasons actually. The police constantly arresting Atsushi gets old after a while and I feel really sorry for him (I actually want to shed a tear for him!). You'd think his parents would have talked to the police about this by now! 6.4/10 A short and fun anime that is worth a watch if you are looking to kill some time. It isn't anything special though.
WATAMOTE and Sunday Without God were two I wasn't expecting to like. But from the first episodes, I may end up watching all of both. WATAMOTE was surprisingly amusing and Sunday Without God has interested me and was not on my radar before the summer season started so it could be a dark horse. 7/10 for both!
So, the anime of this season I've DROPPED like sacks of shit so far are: Servant x Service, Uchouten Kazoku and Gifuu Doudou!!: Kanetsugu to Keiji (2/10). The first two I didn't even get through episode 1 so I can't really rate them but they just were not my cup of tea. Servant x Service was boring, and her problem with her name looked like it would be a crap gimmick. The third... was bloody BORING! It was so manly that it wasn't, if that makes sense. I really did not like the animation, art and character designs... The only thing I could tolerate was the OP. Oh, and I'm close to dropping Dog and Scissors too!
On the Fence
Like I just said, I'm close to dropping Dog and Scissors (4.1/10), it just isn't my thing and I don't find it funny. I also think the first episode of Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist (5/10) was meh but I think it could get better. Gatchaman Crowds (6/10) episode 1 was okay. The main character Hajime Ichinose is a little annoying though. I haven't watched the original so this is my first time in the world of Gatchaman.
2. Final Thoughts
Goodbye Summer 2013 Anime!
Just some mostly brief final comments as well as my final ratings on the 2013 summer (and spring leftover) anime I watched. This has been my favourite season for anime I think!
Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
This was on my radar before we even knew it was happening! I don’t think there is any need for me to say much about Free! other than that it was GREAT. Not BRILLIANT just GREAT.
Kyoto Animation are godly when it comes to animation (the water…!) and if every other element of the show had been complete and utter shit it would at least have the animation to redeem itself with. Of course, those of us who watched it know it was more than just a good looking (in both animation and character designs) anime. I had concerns just before the anime began airing that the fanservice. I worried that it would be OTT and therefore possibly spoil it rather than enhance the enjoyment of it like it’s supposed to. However, it was done just right and wasn’t too distracting.
Moving on to the music… POSSIBLY ONE OF THE BEST OP AND ONE OF THE BEST ED OF SUMMER 2013! I love OLDCODEX - Rage On and STYLE FIVE - SPLASH FREE. I’m surprised I haven’t overplayed them yet. I'm not a huge fan of Ever Blue, if I'm honest. Sound wise (music and seiyuu), Free! was great.
The issue I had with Free! was the pacing. Particularly, the pacing of the last episode. It went from Rin kicking off to Rin crying over Haruka and then everyone being happy, happy, happy when they do the relay. I really respect Rei for letting Rin take his place though. Forgetting about the pacing and other tiny plot related problems I had Free! was great but it could have been brilliant. I think it should have been longer with more time back story animated. Also, a more serious focus on swimming and proper development of the Samezuka team among other things would have made the anime better.
So yes, overall Free! has some flaws BUT you cannot deny this anime had heart and there is nothing like a story of friendship. See you next summer!? 8.4/10
Gin no Saji
Silver Spoon is an enjoyable and uplifting slice of life anime. I didn’t think the animation was anything special at all and it could have been a lot better but it wasn’t awful. The music in it was nice and suits the anime and I likes the seiyuu in it. I’d like to say that through watching and reading Silver Spoon I’ve learnt a few things about agriculture that I didn’t know so it was good to watch/read just for that bit of knowledge. It is a pleasure to watch every week and while I prefer the manga I do really like this anime. I’m looking forward to season 2 in January! 7/10
Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince
It had an awkward start I felt but I’m glad I persevered with it. It's had its ups and downs throughout and the humour I found to be hit and miss but it improved greatly towards the end and turned out to be a pretty decent and occasionally emotional mecha anime (Team Doberman :’-[). If there is a second season, I’m ready and waiting!! 6.4/10
Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi
I found this anime to be quite interesting at times. I loved the idea of God abandoning the world and there having to be gravekeepers. The twists throughout the story were done fairly well too. I think everyone will agree when I say that this anime was one of the most emotional anime of the 2013 summer season - maybe even in the last year. Of course, the emotional scenes were aided by the fantastic ending and insert song Mikako Komatsu - Owaranai Melody wo Utaidashimashita. In my opinion, this is one of the best songs of the summer 2013 anime season. If you do not want to watch this anime (why!?) then at least listen to this beautiful song. I did have some problems with this anime but not enough serious ones that I’m going to go off into a rant. Overall, it was a surprising anime and was not something I had even planned on watching. 7.3/10
Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist
I’m not sure how to describe this anime. It was pretty average in everything (animation, story, characters, music…) and I really did not like the festival episode at all. Still, I’d give it a 5.3/10 It’s definitely not the worst anime I’ve seen but there are plenty I could name that are miles better. Basically it’s not a bad supernatural/fantasy/demon anime but I’ve seen better. If you’ve run out of fantasy anime to watch then go ahead and check out Makai Ouji but if you have a list of others to watch then stick Makai Ouji somewhere in the middle. It’s a bit MEH but I’ll admit I had a grin on my face when Dantalion came back at the end
Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai: Megami-hen
After dropping the second season in October 2012 I decided to give it another chance. I picked it back up again in July and then moved onto the third season. I was confused because I hadn’t read the manga but I watched the Tenri-hen OVA and persevered. I really liked this season of The World God Only Knows at times. I thought the final episode was great and I now really want Keima and Chihiro to be together. An enjoyable and surprising anime. The reason it’s surprising is because I was expecting the third season to be the same as the previous two but the change was a pleasant surprise. I hope they decide to animate more of the manga, if not, I may check it out sometime. The kind of anime that isn't usually my cup of tea but turned out not to be half bad. 6.9/10
Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!
This is one of the best comedy anime I have ever seen. I loved Tomoko Kuroki and her attempts at becoming popular. Even though quite a few of the things she did were obviously really bad ideas and made me cringe like hell I still felt for her and wanted her to succeed. Many people will find it easy to relate in some way to Tomoko and understand how she feels. I respect Tomoko for never giving up. The ending was good but I’d really love a second season. I think I’ll read the manga now. If you haven’t seen WATAMOTE then I suggest you watch it! 7.8/10
I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m not a fan of Senyuu. The comedy is just very hit and miss with me. If there is ever a third season (apparently Alba is going to be in jail for 30 years for punching the King so I doubt it...) then I probably won’t watch it. It wasn’t a terrible way to kill 5 minutes a week though. 4.3/10
Recorder to Randoseru Mi
Like season 1 and 2, Recorder and Randsell Mi is a fun short anime. If you have 3 minutes to kill then watch an episode! I’m glad Atsushi is had a lot less trouble with the police this season because that joke was getting very old. The new characters were fun and brought with them fresh jokes and I enjoyed some of the more slightly serious and touching scenes. This season of Recorder to Randoseru seemed kind of final…? 6/10
This anime presented quite a few interesting ideas. I loved the use of technology to fight and to help people. The GALAX system is really cool. At first the protagonist Hajime was annoying but I slowly warmed up to her as the anime progessed. I loved the character designs and the characters in general were good. I absolutely loved Mamoru Miyano as Berg-Katze; I thought he was fantastic!
The ending was a little too open and left questions unanswered which I didn’t like and I can’t see there being another season so that let the series down. Something that didn’t let down the series was the music! I really love the OP White Ash - Crowds. I like it so much I have the full length on my iPod! Overall, Gatchaman Crowds is a vibrant and pretty enjoyable anime which could have been better. 6.9/10
Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun 2nd Season
I loved the first season and I love this second season too. I am disappointed that there was no proper conclusion and I hate the fact that it is likely we will never see one. I seriously hope someone is translating the manga! It is irritating how long it took for everyone to assemble and realise that they are all connected because we all figured it out in the first season. Still, I do really love this anime. I admit, it isn’t anything ground breaking it is just an enjoyable anime with pretty good characters, story, music and animation. 8/10
At times I enjoyed this anime and at other times I found it too silly and boring and could not help but wonder why I was still watching. The characters were not amazing; I didn’t grow attached to any of them but they all stood apart from each other and made a cast that was not bland at all which helped the anime in terms of enjoyment and humour. I thought the main characters were sufficiently developed but I have to admit I’m getting sick of the typical idiotic male protagonist that’s only useful when it comes to fighting which many series seem to have nowadays.
Overall, it is an average action/adventure. There wasn’t anything particularly stand out about the anime that was either good or bad accept the ending which I thought was actually pretty good. While it wasn’t neatly tied, it was still resolved well but left a few strings for if they fancy making another season in the future. However, if that doesn’t happen viewers will still be satisfied. 5.4/10
Shingeki no Kyojin
I don’t have to say anything, do I? Attack on Titan is fucking EPIC. And I am so going to pick up the manga soon because I cannot wait even a second to find out what happens next. 9.3/10 Why is it missing .7 you ask? Well, am I the only person who isn’t a big fan of Eren? I found he was one of the problems I had with Attack on Titan. Really, if I'm honest, all my problems are little nitpicking things related to the characters. It is still one of the best anime I've seen this year though.
I would say that Summer 2013 was a great anime season! So far, I don't think Autumn is going to be able to top it!
