I watch entirely too much anime for my own good.
I am a 23 year old Masters student studying Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan. My concentration is on Japanese history, especially the Heian period (784-1185 CE). As such my favorite genre of anime tends to be historically based or anime set in ancient times (in Japan or other countries, especially China).
I'm currently working towards becoming fluent in Japanese, and I spent a year living in Japan during my undergrad. If I were a good student I would work harder at watching anime without subtitles. Sadly, I am incredibly lazy...
My list of shows 'to be watched' currently stands at 138, with several dozen more shows and films waiting to be viewed on my hard drive or on DVD's. My main method of anime viewing is marathoning; if it takes me more than a week to watch a show of 26 episodes or less, then it must not be very good. On the other hand if I ever drop a show midway then it must be quite terrible: I've been known to not even stop watching a 150+ ep show due to my belief that there must be some redeeming qualities that will come out soon, right...right?

Konnichiwa! I hear you - I watch anime in phases myself. Case and point, I watched a total of 2 series between May 07 and January 08, but over Christmas break I plowed through some 18-20 series straight. I basically burn myself out, wait for new stuff to come out, then burn myself out again. XD
And I haven't read the Twelve Kingdoms novels, so I wouldn't know how they compare. I have definitely been tempted to pick it up, though, especially since I heard another one is being released soon (or maybe it's already out?)

You Rock! Twelve Kingdoms as your #1 - awesomeness! I'm actually in the middle of rewatching it as I speak; reminding itself why it's my #2 (could be interchanged with my #1, though) and enjoying every minute. Though a rewatch isn't quite as intriuging as the first run through, reliving the bountiful lore is certainly worthwhile.
Anyway, noticed you've been void of comments for some half a year and I don't know why - stumbled upon your profile upon noticing a few of your recs. =)
