Planetes

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Wings of Honneamise

In WoH, the world is still young and daring to reach for the stars. Most people see space as some crazy dream. In PLANETES, the world has conquered space and Earth is soon to become the loser's refuge. Both shows are very amiable social sci-fi, with earthy, everyday characters you can easily identify with.

Dragon Ball Z

One Piece

Both animes follow the fight-arc plan, but in One Piece the storytelling is more refined so when they are not fighting, it doesn't mean nothing is happening. All the fighters in each anime are close like family, in One Piece especially with the concept of 'nakama' (kindred spirits, so to speak). Both animes have a similar drawing style, (although obviously the animation in One Piece is vastly superior, with excellent and well-placed use of CG) and are set in a sort of 'fantasy world', where special attacks can defy the laws of physics.

Berserk

Parallels can be drawn between Ippo and Gattsu. Both fight every fight as if it was their last. Ippo uses his fist, Gattsu uses a sword. They both fight against insurmountable odds and rise to the challenge. They both start off under the yoke of a stronger, more experienced leader (Ippo with Takamura, Gattsu with Griffith) but become equally powerful and start to forge their own legacy by the story's end. At time of writing both are still being continued in manga form, so if you like a nice, long well-crafted story then either will satisfy nicely.

One Piece

On the face of it, both shows (Ippo and One Piece) are highly contrasting. But if you dig deeper, both main characters have a dream which they are striving to realise and willing to fight tooth and nail for. They are surrounded with strong people who help them along the way, and provide different 'rivers' for the story to flow along. You form an emotional attachment with each character, coming to understand why, what and who they are fighting for. Both shows are masterpieces of storytelling. Don't dismiss One Piece as a kiddie's show, because Ippo isn't just a sports anime, is it?
