Highschool of the Dead

Jul 18, 2011

Introduction:

Guns, boobs, baseball bats, zombies, romance - it has it all. Highschool of the Dead felt like a refresing adventure in anime world. I was getting tired of watching traditional romance, drama and shounen all the time so I went for something different. Enjoyable and simple so I don't have to strain my brains too much.

Story: 6

HOTD started quickly, a slight introduction to characters and the adventure may beggin. A zombie gets into school grounds, infect one person and the infection spreads faster than you can say 'epidemy'. The whole school is a bunch of zombies and only few dozens of people are still non-brain eaters.

The story concentrates around a group of highshool students and their air-headed teacher to get through the infected city, meet up with children parents and get to the safety. That's the problem - while the series were interesting to watch if I think about story, it's above average at best.

To make things worse neither does the anime explain how the infection started nor does it have a proper ending. It's like someone ripped a middle of a book and while it has plenty of interesting parts in it, it feels incomplete.

Animation: 9

When it comes to animation it's great. HOTD is a new anime so it's not big of a suprise. The movements were smooth and action scenes exciting. The colours ranged from dark themes to bright, beautiful colour schemes.

Sound: 9

The Japanese voice actors did outstanding job and every voice seemed to fit each character respectively. Opening and ending songs were beautiful, in fact, opening song even made it into my I-Pod's playlist.

Characters: 7

Overall, I think characters were good and finally we get a main protagonist who actually acts like one! I'm sick of indecisive, dull, boring protagonists and luckily HOTD didn't have one. Takashi KOMURO was desicive, quick, well-hearted and protective. He didn't hesitate to smash his best-friends' brains out once the guy turned into zombie. He protected the girl he liked and helped others in trouble.

The cast is cosists of big variaty of personalities, you get tsunderes, angry nerd, dumb teacher with big breasts, strict father, slimy bastard...everything. Just what an entertaining zombie movie, game or anime needs.

The anime is only 12 episodes long so don't expect any huge character development though.

Overall: 8

Watch it. It's an interesting action anime with zombies and ecchi. It's a great entertainment and doesn't really require much thinking. I considered it as a summer blockbuster movie.

I've seen a wide variety of opinions and rating for this anime. Some rate it 10, some rate 6 while someone else rates it 3 out of 10. Clearly - if you don't like ecchi, fan-service or any of that stuff then don't watch it. People who hate ecchi watch few episodes, dropps it and rates it 3. It's an ecchi - what did you expect?

While I would give HOTD 6 as an independent anime and 10 as an zombie, action, ecchi piece, it gets score of 8 overall.

6/10 story
9/10 animation
9/10 sound
7/10 characters
8/10 overall
