Wait I just remember that I cried in Saikano as well.
That is such a coinsidence! You sound pretty awsome Kousagi. I see that you have Saikano on your stalled and just wanted to let you know that that has a surprise ending. You may like Ayashi no Ceres. Its dramaish. You want things that make you laugh or cry...I laugh at a lot. But It takes a lot to make me cry too. Ones I cried in: Code Geass, Clannad After Story, probablly would have in Naruto if I hadn't had a spoiler lol, I think I might have cried in Kannazuki no Miko (that is a tragic romance), and then Wolf's Rain (which is just plain out tragic reality). I may think of more recommendations when I actually have time since I should be doing homework right now haha.
I know perfectly well what you mean since even nowadays, i tend to close an eye for certain shows that somehow moved me even though it lacked something more or less important. I usually view with a critic eye the so called "blockbusters" of certain seasons. Winter 2010 was ok, had 2 animes i appreciated alot like Dance in the Vampire Bund and Durarara!! which were worth watching. Spring came then, and i was actualy looking forward to Angel Beats! but it disapointed big time however Kaichou wa Maid-sama succeded in stuff that Angel Beats! didn't. And a few hidden gems, Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan totaly took my breath and even now I remained loyal to this thought-provoking series and Senkou no Night Raid, which presented another important turn point in Japan's history same like Hakuouki. What i want to say is, every show has something that it lacks, compared to other ones, but what i wana point is that for certain shows, it worths overlooking them and just be honest with your feelings for once.
Like in football, a referee to be good needs to go unnoticed, an anime show to be good, needs to go unnoticed as well. The one who brings discussions usually is controvertial, some will like it others won't. And from my experience, the shows that were really unnoticed were the biggest surprizes of certain seasons.
I have experience in anime shows and especially in the so called "overrated" ones. Usually whats overrated is not the best and these past 2 years there were alot of examples, Angel Beats!, this one, even HOTD and one more that comes to my mind is Fairy Tale. I'm a fan of HOTD but viewing it as a critic, it doesnt have what it need to be so big rated, but here sales and ratings talk, and opinions count less. Angel Beats was an abomination, i never seen a more sneaky anime that could get so easily such big ratings, good reviews just because there is a tear-jerking ending while other aspects lack in consistency. Fairy Tale as well, being a copy of OP but this time without an eye-sore animation, i view it as a bad taste comedy, its so not entertaining, but with good ratings. As for this one, like you said "you know where i come from".
Thats the thing ya know, i don't like parodies, or stuff that make fun of other thing. I don't have anything against the anime itself but against the producers, when i heard that Gainax hired americans to do this, i was sure it would be a failure. And believe me i am not the only one. I'm part of many anime comunities and you know what? The ones that are less unexperienced praised it but the ones that seen as many as i seen and has my experience in the anime industry, completely rejects it.
Until now i rejected one anime because of its art and that is One Piece, now i have to add another one on the list. This one lacks many stuff that an anime should have in my opinion, if at least it had a "decent" animation design, directing i would've give it a shot.
