Hi,

I'm actually more of a tea person. I like to take photos of birds among other things. I live a modest life, happily getting by on a day-to-day basis. I've spent hundreds of hours travelling on trains. I am a music fan before anything and I also enjoy classic literature and foreign cinema. Food is also one of the best things in life.

I volunteer as a character and people moderator here on Anime-Planet so it's possible you're reading this because I left you a comment in regards to a submission.

I'm hoping to use the blog feature here more frequently in the future. I like to submit reviews when I can though I don't expect many to read them as they can be very long. I could make typing an Olympic sport.

My star ratings are based on a system of absolute jack shit.

I kind of figured they were some preliminary ratings, but my need to be obnoxious got the better of me.

I agree that Chihayafuru and Ano Natsu are both dissapointing. I expected more from both of them and they showed promise in the early episodes, especially Chihayafuru. Chihayafuru's general tone is a bit too straightforward (can't think of a better way to describe it right now) and I feel that it's been lacking tension (bad thing in a sport-style anime, methinks) for quite a while. Lately it's really just been one drawn out arc of Chihaya finding her style of karuta (or whatever) while playing a bunch of women who are forgotten the next episode. I suspect that they're planning a second season and want as much material saved up for that (I think there's more than enought material for a second season, there's like 16 volumes out right now).

If a second season comes I really hope that something will come out of the main trio's relationships because they are all pretty damn boring right now, and I don't think they have enough time to create or resolve anything worthwhile during the last three or four episodes. If they're going to focus on the karuta in the putative second season they'll have to really kick it up a few notches and utilise the supporting cast better for it to remain interesting.

As for Chihaya, I did like her character when they were in elementary school, but after the time skip I mostly just think she's boring and mostly a plot-making device (?) for the cast to gather around instead of the lead characer she should be. She has some motivations and some flaws, but I think they're mostly irrelevant in the long run. At least the some of secondary characters are there to keep some of my interest for the show intact. I'd hoped for the Queen to be something more than just some ominous boogeyman, though.

Still, I like the music, character designs, how they animate the karuta matches (and some of the matches) and other stuff that I can derive enjoyment out of if other elements are lacking.

I don't have as much to say about Ano Natsu except that I really find almost all of it so very dull. The characters, character interaction, the love polygon, the alien thing, the fanservice and Remon's trolling (I grew weary of her laugh about three episodes in). I kind of like Rinon though. And it is pretty nice to look at. Not as much as Chihayafuru, but still. It picked up some slack in the end of episode 10, but I don't think I'll be giving it more than three stars. Chihayafuru's prognose has dropped from four stars to three and a half stars as of late, but they might be able to salvage it by giving us one kickass ending.

P.S. I'm really digging Penguindrum and I think – by this point – that it's safe to say that it's going to end up in my top 5 series. I really, really like almost every aspect of it, but especially the characters and how they're developed. It makes the commotion around Steins;Gate seem entirely unfounded in comparison. Okay, I thought it was a bit unfounded before watching Penguindrum, but my point still stands. Hope you'll be able to join us in our Brother, Dear Brother group, it's always good to have you in a buddy group. D.S.

So, while doing my traditional Sunday stalking I noticed that you rated Ano Natsu de Matteru higher than Chihayafuru (outrageous). Do you really dislike karuta that much or what?

Thanks for your comment on my Angel's Egg review!^^

Yeah, the whole movie is very confusing and I have a tendency to avoid movies that get to caught up in their symbolism since I usually consider them to be pretentious. With that said, I still enjoyed the movie immensely and I'll probably watch it again and see if I can figure out more from the ending. As it is now, it still confuses me.
