Welcome to my profile stranger!

Me and anime had an almost accidental encounter back in 2007. At the time my life was undergoing a slight transition, certain habits had to change and I was in dire need of a distraction. One friend of mine suggested I watch "Robotech". I once caught a glimpse of it on TV and liked it so I went ahead and watched the whole series. I moved on to the original Macross series and then to Ghost in The Shell since Sci-Fi was and is one of my favorite genres. And after tha I just kept watching. I do not consider "Robotech" an anime, but it was what got me started.

I discovered Anime Planet sometime early 2008, at the time I was searching for sites with anime related content. I started building my anime list since then, using the recommendations to try new (completed) shows which I watched at steady paces until recently. These days I mostly watch ongoing series as soon as they are released, sometimes too soon! This habit of mine eventually lead to me getting involved with Anime Planet, something I was not really expecting, with the help of Twitter which brought me in contact with Sothis.

Which brings me to the community here. My social skills aren't very good, so it's difficult for me to make friends. As far anime goes, I prefer watching them rather than posting a comment in endless threads and although sometimes I do want to make a comment, I prefer Twitter for that job. Hence, made no friends in AP despite being here a while.

One other thing that happened because of anime, I started listening to anisongs (anime OP and EDs) a lot. The past couple of years 90% of what I listen to are comprised of anisongs. My iPod is full of them and so is my cell phone. I listen frequently to anime-nfo radio and I never miss a weekly anime song radio show on a UK streaming radio station with a real presenter! You can also find me on last.fm:

As far manga goes, I follow a few of them, mostly mainstream stuff. I keep my main list on manga-updates so my list here is probably not up to date, but I intent to sync them from time to time.

Other than that, I know a few seiyuus and a few major anime studios but I do not delve in the otaku land more than necessary. You will not find collections of figurines or stacks of limited edition DVD/BDs in my place.

What you will find, are DVDs of shows like Star Trek and Babylon 5, shows I loved at the time they were airing (expect the original Star Trek, I was not born yet!). I'm a big scifi fan and most shows I watch that are not anime are scifi US shows. My other interests are the IT world, personal computers and smartphones. I sleep in the same room with a running PC for 15 years now, then only thing changed is that the PCs are 2 now. When I'm in no mood for anime I usually end up messing with my Linux server, trying to improve it.

As you have already guessed, I have no life. I'm just another nerdy otaku with few friends, and if you made it this far reading this boring tl;dr profile you must be really bored yourself!

Huh, that's interesting. You don't consider robotech to be an anime? Why not? How about the original Macross series?

Hi there Charlie! I just thought you sounded like an interesting character, and figured I'd introduce myself. I haven't actually used MAL yet, except for the random review every once in a while, but I've found Anime-Planet to be quite enjoyable so far during my relatively short stay here.

Aye, I agree with you on that. The issues on MAL really are becoming a problem, but I'll keep using it until it stumbles and falls or Crave Online Media decide to get their fingers out of their collective arses and fix the site. I know several people who've come over to AP from MAL, but a few have gone back for exactly the reasons you mentioned - AP isn't a social network.

Unfortunately the lack of a viable alternative will send more and more people here to AP, but like you say, it's not set up to be anything like MAL. I started out using AP as well, but I switched over to MAL because the database is more complete and they don't do things like compile all of the Kara no Kyoukai movies under one heading (which is really weird given that the movies are a series of standalone stories, kind of like Ghost in The Shell and it's sequel Innocence).

It'll be interesting to see how AP develops in the wake of MAL's current troubles.

Time to make add this site to my favorites and add it to the top bars.  So sad, it goes in front of MAL but, I need a list that I know I can depend on.  Still though, I'll try and keep my list current on MAL too.  How about you?
