Elfen Lied

Feb 24, 2010

Elfen Lied is a prime example of an anime that owes it's generally good scores solely to hype. People like it because they are told they will like it. It's a phenomena which, though it occurs in other cases, truly shines through with this anime above all others. I'll start with Elfen Lied's story. Diclonius, unique human-like entities that have slight abnormalities such as horns, and invisible hands that can shred humans with ease, exist in this world. We are treated to our main character sporting her Diclonius power when she breaks(and then walks) out of a facility. She butchers the whole armed force bent... See full review

Mushishi

Jun 6, 2010

Story:In a different world, where forests dominate the landscape Ginko a wandering Mushishi travels place to place either seeking out where his services are of use, or being called on by individuals inhabiting scattered villages. Mushishi are masters over the mushi which are the most basic of life, also affecting the world profoundly though only noticed by a select few. The beautiful feel of the setting, attitude of the characters, and often the music all combines to create a great atmosphere with a strong theme of natures power and importance. However despite all the great, and amazing things about... Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Oct 25, 2010

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is one of the longest anime I know of, and the longest I have watched in it's entirety. It is a highly rated series and before tackling it I had yet to see a single poor review. Now I understand why. It seems only scifi junkies(such as ones who find themselves intruiged with star wars/Trek just on the merit they are in space) tend to complete the series, and others drop it so immediately it's not worth endowing with a review. Story The general story is that two titanic forces are clashing in space while a third neutral party lies in the middle of it all. A basic set up for... See full review

Le Chevalier D'Eon

May 25, 2011

Story Le Chevalier's story is difficult to review, on merit of it's nonexistence. That being said, what the developers mistook for a plot was indeed terrible. Allow me to lay the formula for every episode in the series: 1. A. Issue presents itself(zombies)/B.sit around speaking of nothing(order may vary) 2. The main character turns into a female posthumous super saiyan(their sister) 3. Episode ends, nothing has been accomplished. 4.Repeat 25 times. The break in this pattern, is the conclusions ritual, in which once more characters do nothing while the zombified king sits in his very cool bed(which I must... See full review

Berserk

Mar 1, 2010

Story:Finally, I get around to review Berserk. While nothing is wholly perfect, the parts of Berserk that are, can only be described as mind blowing. When you sit there having watched Berserk, it really hits you how signifigantly you've graduated from DBZ. If for some reason you watched the first episode and it turned you off. No. Turn back around and watch the next episode. I would recommend skipping the first episode, just like Berserks brother Gungrave. Although watching the first episode won't destroy your experience, your experience will be enchanced by jumping right in to episode 2. Berserk is epic... See full review

Boogiepop Phantom

Apr 6, 2010

I will only give boogiepop phantom an overall rating, as it is not the kind of anime that would benefit from an in depth analysis of every aspect. It is also the worst anime I have had the displeasure of viewing(Update: No longer the worst!). I won't lie and say it doesn't have it's interesting aspects, but it is an overall unrewarding experience. Boogiepop phantom begins with a mysterious beam of light, which takes place a month before the series begins to be fleshed out, and 5 years after some serial killings. I'll say now that this whole beam of light, nor the following events are really satisfactorily... See full review

Texhnolyze

Mar 3, 2010

Edit: I won't edit the review, as this is how I felt initially, but after subsequent rewatchings this is certainly one of the best, if not THE best anime out there. Nothing else is as raw, atmospheric, depressing, yet hopeful. Watch it an give it a chance. Rewatch it later and let it sink in. Story: Texhnolyze is one of the best anime's out there. It IS profound in many ways, at least as much as an anime can be. It is easily the best scifi anime I have seen, and most likely one of the best, if not the best out there. But it is not for everyone. Texhnolyze starts off at a crawl. The first episode has... See full review

The Place Promised in Our Early Days

Feb 28, 2010

Story: I would not wish to spoil the plot for anyone looking forwards to this, somewhat hyped movie. It is a very, very slow movie. If you are not a fan of 98 percent actionless movies that deal with day by day activities you will not like this. I must stress that that is not why the score is a 5.5, I am a fan of slow anime in many instances. Where a place promised in our early day loses points can be attributed to many things. First they don't give you a very solid hook, even by standard of slice of life animes, the first portion progresses at a crawl and has an unpropotionally small amount of the... See full review

Ergo Proxy

May 25, 2011

Ergo Proxy, while having its moments of promise, ultimately reveals the poverty of designing a series to fit a particular length. With an attention demanding initial episode, and some standard of quality until episode 3, it can be hard to stop watching, even as the series reveals that it didn't really have an idea where it was going after all. Story: Ergo Proxy takes place in an interesting world, where societies are maintained within domes dotting the wasteland the earth has become. The beginning episode of Ergo Proxy promptly inspired me to continue to the second, as it set a distinctive feel... See full review

Death Note

Mar 15, 2010

There are anime that are easy and fun to watch, and then there are anime that are deep and profound. Death note is the hands down best of the former type.Story:Ah finally I get around to rewatching and reviewing Death Note. The story for the first portion of death note deserves nothing less than a ten. The concept is so unique and different than mainstream anime that it can and will engross any viewer. Rather than intense fights death note displays battles of wits, applied to very out of the ordinary situations. I would never spoil the great elements of the plot, but let it serve to say, probably a few of... See full review

Sword of the Stranger

Feb 28, 2010

Story: This movie is one I went into having heard some great comments about it. However, as I usually do with animes I intend to watch, especially movies, I avoided reading any reviews. On the other end of this movie, I really have to say, I don't know what there really is to rave about. The story begins with an excellent action scene, and continues at a pretty good pace from there on. However, there isn't much story to be had along that decently paced road. The plot isn't all that well put together(or rather its put together in the most cliche and predictable way possible), in the first scene we know... See full review

The Vision of Escaflowne

Feb 24, 2010

Though it has been some time since watching Escaflowne, I remember going into it expecting something decent, and being dissapointed. However I must say that once the initial sadness of it being a worthwhile anime wore off, I quickly began enjoying the anime as a comedy, laughing at the cliche riddled storyline, hilariously bad characters(not all of them persay), and the constant weird trips that come on suddenly throughout the series. Escaflowne is not by any means a painful anime, unless you came into it looking for a ground-breaking epic. It just boasts everything you can come to expect from a standard... See full review

Gungrave

Feb 23, 2010

This is a spoiler free review written after two full viewings of the subbed series and one of the dub. STORY 8/10 Keep in mind a few things when regarding my 10/10 rating for this series. The first and most important is that the first episode is unforgiveable in the sense it is essentially a copy and paste from one of the most lackluster episodes later in the series, and furthermore the most difficult segment to understand. But worse than that it gives away details of twists that would otherwise serve as huge surprises, which also means as the series kicks off you immediately realize where things are... See full review

Serial Experiments Lain

Nov 12, 2010

Serial experiments was an anime I really thought I would like. It was from the maker of one of my absolute favorites, Texhnolyze, so I figured chances of me enjoying it were high. Unfortunately Lain is very far from being a substantial anime and it's story/characters suffer from the overcrowded story. Story: On one hand Lain explores some interesting ideas, of godhood, human evolution, what memories are and more. However it delivers these messages in a very bizarre manner, being very abstract at every point possible, to avoid actually needing to build a believable world or characters. One of my distinct... Neon Genesis Evangelion

May 9, 2010

Evangelion is one of the most average anime I have watched. Is that bad? Not really, considering the surplus of poor ones it surpasses. Story: Evangelions story at its core is pretty interesting. The second impact wiped out a vast majority of humans, and fifteen years later angels begin striking once more. Why are they attacking? Why do they not work together? Why are they coming to one area? What are the eva's? There is a lot of mystery to the series, and you cant help but be curious about what will happen next, on some level. A lot of questions are actually answered, though some are more apparent than... See full review

Monster

May 9, 2010

Ah monster, I will be so bold to say it is the only good long anime, and not only good, great. Story:The story follows wrongly accused Doctor Tenma on a quest to clear his name of the serial murders he has been accused of. Well More accurately, to kill the real murderer who he operated on and in a way, allowed to continue his spree. As the story unfolds over the length of 74 episodes questions of justice and the equality of lives are posed. There are no filler, however at one point the anime does unfortunately become almost episodic(around ten or so feel this way). The anime does maintain an incredible... See full review

Cowboy Bebop

Apr 20, 2010

Bebop is a good anime, next to anime like death note as one of the best gateway anime. It has likeable characters, a great atmosphere, and a musical soundtrack that has stuck in my head for years. That all being said it is also one of the most overated animes out there, though for understandable reasons. Story:Cowboy Bebop follows a loveable crew of space traveling bounty hunters and their adventure throughout outer space in the distant future. The atmosphere is somewhat dark, but humorous themes and characters often break this up. As far as story goes however, it is episodic in format. This is the series... See full review

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Mar 2, 2010

First of all, if you are not a big GITS fan, turn back now, this is not a movie for you!   Story: Innocence is bad. I watched it back to back with the original GITS movie, which is longer, but felt like it was over in an hour. Innocence however dragged on endlessly. It's pacing is the absolute worst, and as the mediocre story pans out we are forced to endure a needless torrent of quotes that in such quantity, eventually become redundant. The only points this gets is for the scene of Batou's home, which was done well, but can hardly be considered story. Discussing the plot further would be an insult... See full review

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Mar 1, 2010

Story:Ghost in the shell follows section 9, led by the cyborg major Kusanagi as they investigate a very interesting case. The story plays out well, and at no point leaves you bored, although perhaps a little confused, though it is not trippy or intentionally ambiguous like some other anime. The story takes place in a believeable(although perhaps not in the given timeline) scifi world. We see the new technologies and how humans have 'evolved' in the time, and how criminals operate, including new ways crimes can even be comitted. It is worth it to note that the catcher in the rye is referenced quite... See full review

5 Centimeters per Second

Feb 24, 2010

I didn't know what to expect from 5 cm per second. From the trailer I knew that I was about to be blown away by the animation, and get treated to a love story. To what end I had no idea, but here on the other side, I am somewhat glad I decided to sit down with the film. The story begins as a basic enough love story, but certainly gives us details on the two as the story unfolds. It is divided into three parts, the first two of which I thought were done quite well. They are certainly slow, and if you are looking for any kind of gunslinging action you will be sorely dissapointed. For a romance it sure does a... See full review

Redline

Nov 9, 2017

Unless you are frothing at the mouth for a serious movie, Redline is just about the perfect anime movie.  Let me emphasize that you do NOT need to like racing or have the remotest interest in cars for this to be an enjoyable watch. For awhile I avoided watching Redline because I wrongly thought that the racing was the core of it, as opposed to the over the top excelently animated spectacle. And thats what youre signing up for with Redline- A fast paced, over the top, outright ridiculous story that comes out of the gate fast, gives you a moment to breathe, then doesnt stop until the movie... Gilgamesh

Aug 29, 2013

I've finally found it. The holy grail of bad anime. A vacant wasteland where you wander , desperately seeking characters, only to find utterly vacant shells blankly staring at one another. A land so stagnant that motion itself is a rarity, with most moments being comprised of still shots. Every episode the same fight recurs between the same factions, with the same resolution. Nothing. To even call these scenes fights is a discredit to even the most poorly coreographed productions. They involve all the characters using the same abilities without any creativity or variation, making it difficult to tell... See full review

Basilisk

Jul 10, 2013

Naruto where people die... Alot. I'm the kind of person who enjoys anime with depth, character development, and powerful themes. None of these are present in Basilisk, but because I dove into it knowing what it was as opposed to hoping for some masterpiece, I was able to relax and enjoy nearly every episode. There is something morbidly exciting about a bunch of super powered characters being introduced, wondering how they'll kill or be killed and not worrying about character development. As a matter of fact, the funny thing is that basilisks biggest weakness is trying to develop characters as opposed to... See full review

Fate Zero is many things. It is one of if not the prettiest anime out there. It has some of the best characters. It has an interesting premise with a compelling enough narrative to demand you devour it in one or two sittings. It also, unfortunately, is tethered to a terrible series which holds it back from being a legendary title. Story:

Welcome to the NHK!

Nov 9, 2012

Welcome to the NHK is one of the most unexpected treats I've stumbled on in recent times. It follows a hikikomori (think a live at home WoW addict) named Sato. He lives alone in a tiny apartment, is unemployed, and a bit mad, under the impression there is a grand conspiracy against him. Shortly after his introduction he meets a young girl who promises to help him fix his reclusive ways. What follows is a series which addresses some of Japans recent issues in a manner thick with dark humor. The earlier episodes err on the side of funny while the later are downright depressing.  The most... See full review

Aoi Bungaku Series

Jul 26, 2011

Aoi Bungaku was a series which I knew nothing going into other than that it was short stories in anime form. It passed all expectations I had forged and has proven itself a must watch, well rounded in all categories.   Story Aoi is made up of several short stories spanning 12 episodes. I will give a review of them each individually though I must say that even the order in which these stories are placed is excellent. The first is an intense and heavy, nearly smothering experience which is followed by a story which begins much more lighthearted. Then a brilliant psychological but not lighthearted or... Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

Jun 20, 2010

Story: Gankutsuou is an odd bugger. It puts a spin on a classic novel that took place in the past and shifts it FAR in the future. First thing's first, the setting is neat. The beginning of the series paints a cool atmospheric setting where we meet diverse generally high class people, and it becomes clear going to a different planet is like a plane trip. I really enjoyed this very interesting new universe, and the series was atmospheric, but unfortunately rather than doing anything with it they kind of forget the established setting and do nothing with it, so it eventually loses it's edge. The pace is... See full review

Wolf's Rain

May 31, 2010

Wolfs Rain was my surprise of the year as far as anime series go. I began watching it with very low expectations but slowly it grew on me, despite many gripes. Story: From the beginning you get the feeling the world of Wolf's Rain isn't quite right. The city we begin in is a gloomy place. Living is a harsh routine in an isolated city that simulates normal skies beneath a dome. The feeling that this city is very disjointed from the rest of the world become clear, and the existence of a class known as nobles, who have access to flying crafts are of evident contrast to the low class civilians. Shigurui: Death Frenzy

Story: Shigurui doesn't have a great story. In episode one the events of the episode lead up to a climactic and controversial battle between two characters we don't know much about. It is done fairly well and pulls you in nicely. But, hate to break it to you, the story doesn't ever reach that point, and only gives a hint at how things escalate to that first episode, but it's not done well. The story itself then is presented as the inner workings of a dojo, and it's reltion to other dojo's. Later I guess there's something of a twist but it is hardly that, and makes it so we hear less of an enjoyable... See full review

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig

Mar 7, 2010

Story:Ghost in the shell 2nd gig's story is presented infinitely better than the first gig. I say that because, where the first was littered with absolutey horendous filler the eats up half the anime, 2nd gig has fewer filler, much more appropriately placed, most tying in and not breaking up the seasons flow, and just much better in terms of enjoyability. For example in season one where we would have a random out of place story interupting and poorly executed standalone episode about a random villain we could not care less about, here we are treated to funny and well executed shorts like if a member of...
