Clannad

Dec 6, 2013

A couple of weeks ago I was questionned if my name was some kind of Clannad anagram. He then proceeded to flame me on the forum for some unknown reason at the time. After the twerp decided to get lost it made me wonder about Clannad because I hadn't personally heard much about it. I was pleasantly surprised with what I got but I've seen some mixed reviews based on this title. So without hesitation lets dive in.

Nagisa and Tomoya

--STORY--

So we start off with our main protagonist Tomoya who is pretty much a generic delinquent but with an impressive amount of wit. Going to school one day he comes across a lonely ditzy girl called Nagisa and they develop a strong friendship after a while. She loves drama and wants to get involved but the drama club needs to be re-established for this to be a relaity. They incorporate the help of other students and begin to find out more about each other and their issues in the process of starting the drama club.

I already know what most of you are thinking, well how generic can this one possibly become, and yes it has been done before. But the way in which we learn gradually about each of the characters really kept me in touch with this anime. More about that later but the story itself wasn't bad in itself, just a bit generic. Don't get me wrong it was mainly for character development to form the basis of the after story, and the character Fuuko's story is a little hard to grasp but that doesn't affect the story as a whole.

               --ANIMATION--

This is a key feature to this animes success The backgrounds, the effects and the character art is tremendous. Although I have heard some issues with the character design, particularly the eyes. Yes they are huge and drawn a little differently but honestly that didn't bother me that much at all. I did in fact have to adjust myself a little because of it but It was quickly unnoticed. Half the time I was being consumed by so much cuteness, honeslty I haven't seen an anime with the girls as cute as this. You get the best background and effects in the 'other world' and in the introduction sequence.

                                                                             --SOUND--

"Dango, Dango, Dango, Dango", was I the only one that struggled to get this song out of my head. I don't know how a song with little balls with eyes can stick in your head so much (pun not intended). Not only is the melody catchy but very soothing and ideal for a slice of life anime like this. The sound effects themselves were very accurate too, you can see this in the basketball game for example where it is all quite realisitc in the sounds and effects. Whilst the intro song was not as catchy as the outro it still did the job well and deserves some credit.

--CHARACTERS--

This is by far my favorite part of the series, the characters were all so memorable and I wanted it to go well for all of them in the end. The best characters would include in my opinion: Tomoya, Akkio, Sunohara, Kotomi and Tomoyo. The others were still good just not as good. The lead female role Nagisa lacks a spine and whilst to her credit is supposed to be her personna but sometimes I found myself losing my patience with her due to her moany voice, ditzy looks and lack of common sense on some occasions. Due to her good heart and ability to overcome these flaws later on I do not dislike her at all. In terms of character strength however Tomoyo and Tomoya take the top spot.

--SUMMARY--

This anime is great but it merely acts as a warm up for part two, which I'll review later on. As a slice of life it explores different aspects of life and how issues are overcome chronically. Successful though it is in doing this, you won't find yourself nearly as impressed as you will in the after story.

If you liked this try: Kokoro Connect, Clannad Pt.2

(Bear in mind my opinion may differ from yours but if you any feedback or constructive critisim I would appreciate it :D.)
