True Tears

Jan 5, 2015

Well then. After watching it, I find myself confused and on the fence as to whether or not I'm glad I spent the time watching it. After the first couple of episodes, I was really excited that I had found yet another emotionally torturous series (I've got an unhealthy obsession for those). I thought this show had good potential but just fell completely flat at the end. I will be keeping this review relatively short because quite frankly, True Tears just ain't worth my time after that ending.

STORY: As I already stated, the beginning held good (not great) potential to draw some feels. I won't really dive into the middle of the story at all because at this point to me is trivial. What came at the end left pissed for trying to become attached to the show. Don't get me wrong. I am crazy for emotional rollercoasters and depressing, tragic endings because they are moving. They leave me satisfied because they have significantly moved my emotions. Though "tragic" may not be the best word to describe this stupifyingly anticlimactic ending, True Tears not only ends [*insert lesser synonym of "tragic here*], it did not make a significant impact on me in the slightest. I would much rather be emotionally scarred from a miserably painful ending such as that of White Album 2, which silently destroys you from early on and then delivers a fatal blow that you feel like you see happen in slow motion. THAT is a story worth some "true tears", not this.

ANIMATION: I was fairly pleased with the animation. The characters were fairly attractive, though Aiko was by far the most beautiful character. I was not particularly fond of Hiromi, there was just something very blank and vacant about her eyes (though there were a few moments where other characters mentioned her eyes). I found it very atmospherically pleasant during every scene in the bamboo on the way to the jetty and the jetty itself. I also found scenes by the chicken coop to be very peaceful, which hit home for me when I visit my chickens in their coop. I was very pleased with the animation of Raigomaru and Jibeta (the two chickens). They always gave me a huge smile.

Sound: Didn't make or break for me. Pretty neutral. Chicken bu-gocks and clucks were very true and very adorable.

Characters: I quite often (but not always) find the male leads to be quite bland. Shinichirco wasn't any different. I was not fond of Hiromi, despite there being most character development focused on her. I am ususally extremely fond of the quiet, dark horse female characters, but something about her rubbed me the wrong way. Not sure if I was on Shinichiro's mom's side though, she was a little crazy. His dad was a cool dude though. Despite shipping Noe, I saw it coming that Hiromi would end up as the winner. They kept teasing the chance that Shinichiro would confess his feelings for Noe but that never happened and Noe was left pretty empty handed other than that "Shinichiro could fly". I liked Noe, she was a little odd but way more charming than Hiromi. In the end, I was happy for Aiko and Miyokichi, because out of all th characters, I actually cared most about their feelings. Too bad they only made it in as such secondary characters.

Anyways, I'm done, I already feel like I've spent too much time writing this review. Watch it if you like, its a fast and easy watch. Just don't expect any profound ending.
