That's actually sort of interesting, as I consider Voices to be Shinkai's best work. 5cm suffered somewhat from an abbreviated, undetailed final arc, and Beyond the Clouds had all that boring sci-fi verbosity bogging down its middle. Don't get me wrong - I love all his stuff to pieces, but to me Voices has always been the one where he didn't fuck anything up.
Don't know if I'd call Aishiteruze horrid. It was slow, trite, poorly animated and occasionally boring, granted. However, the show sold itself on Yuzuyu being adorable. And she was. Honestly, pretty much all three of the stars I gave it stem from that fact alone.
Wouldn't necessarily recommend taking my ratings too seriously, though. While my tastes are not utterly bizarre and indecipherable, they aren't particularly trustworthy either.
That's alright, just because you don't frequent Fort Collins that often doesn't mean we can't bond as fellow Coloradans! There's plenty of stuff to talk about.
My star ratings tend to be kind of personal, which is generally fine until I double them and try and use them for reviews. As for 5 Centimetres Per Second, it bothered me. The animation was superb - definitely the best I've seen - but the story just failed to move me. Perhaps I wasn't in the mood, or perhaps I couldn't really relate, but I don't like it when an anime is clearly trying to make me feel some way and fails to do so. Because more often than not, I actually try and allow myself to be affected. I've lost count of the number of anime that have made me cry, if only a little.
Same goes for Kanon (2006). Technically it's exceptional (in terms of animation and soundtrack at the very least) and it's widely humped by fanboys. But because it didn't really affect me - despite trying oh so hard - I couldn't give it any more than a 7 in my review in spite of its merits and the fact that it was very much my kind of show (at least at the time, although tastes have changed a little).
Anyway, I think that about explains that. *insert dusting off of hands here*. You should watch something completely off the wall and review it.
Seriosuly though, PLEASE, PLEASE write your own GM review so I can remove mine. ^_^; that's review #2 ever - all of my old ones SUCK and I definitely n eed to remove them (but would prefer not to unless there's a better one to put in its place!)
