Winter 2010-11 First Impressions

10 JAN

As always, this season looks like a pretty mixed bag. These ratings are out of 5.

(Most recent at the top)

Beelzebub Episode 2 - 1.5 (Status: Dropped)

The electrocution was funny the first time... in the first episode. After the 7th time in the second episode I was fed up. This episode felt like it finally could have some sort of development, but then just killed it by being plain annoying. Beelzebub, consider yourself dropped.

Gosick Episode 2 - 3

Things are beginning to feel like Umineko no Naku Koro ni. I hope it doesn't go that direction. This episode was interesting, but I felt it was a little overdramatic, almost like it's taking it self too seriously. I'm still not sure where this show is going, but I hope it gets better from here.

Gosick - 3.5

Following what seems to be this season's theme, Gosick brings something seemingly pretty new to the table. The first epsidode seemed a bit... short. The teacher is annoying, but I am hoping that most of the action of this show will take place outside the school, so that shouldn't be to big an issue. The main protagonist seems kind of average, but Victorica has a very interesting personality. And finally some mystery! This show could be good.

Dragon Crisis! - 2.5

Average. Average male protagonist meets supernatural young girl (or "dragon" if you so please) This show could get better, but I doubt it. It has Asura Cryn' written all over it, and I hated that show.

Fractale - 4

It's been a long time since a show like this has come out. The feeling I get from the story is that this will be a real science fiction show, like NGE or Escaflowne. Finally someting not padded with moe, fanservice or cheap gags. I feel that this show out of what I have seen will end up with one of the better ratings overall of the shows this season. it has a very Ghibli feel, but offers something new and interesting.

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? | Are You Really a Zombie? - 4.5

"If you didn't bring me back to life, I would be dead." While he obviously doesn't have the most original lines in history, our protagonist Aikawa Ayumu has an excuse–he is a zombie. In the first minute of this show I really didn't know what to think, but after that all hell broke lose, and I loved it! I don't know if it can manage to keep it up, but this first episode has everything. Zombies, Chainsaw-wielding magical girls, and giant crayfish monsters are only a few of the insane things Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? brings to the table. And most surprising of all, this episode is probably the first time in a long (very long) time that I have actually laughed at a shows fanservice. All around this show has the potential to be awesome, but could also easily go awry fast. Next to Kimi ni Todoke, this is what I am looking forward to most this season for now. Hopefully it holds itself up.

Level E - 4

Simple concept, well executed. The animation is great, the character animation I find particularly appealing, being closer to proper human anatomy. The story could go a lot of ways from here, but it has potential.

Beelzebub - 2.5

Delinquent of delinquents is charged with raising a baby demon lord. Not your every day premise. While the concept of the show is quite interesting, it gets beaten in to your head about every 5 seconds, making the concept seem old fast. The show is pretty random and I had at least a few laughs, but overall the show will likely be pretty average. Why does that baby have to be so annoying?

Shows I don't plan on watching this season:

Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne—!! - Sis-con, not interested.

Cardfight!! Vanguard - Generic card battle game. Yeah, it's pretty much in the name.

Infinite Stratos

Rio - Rainbow Gate! - Pretty much about boobs. Moving along.

Freezing - Magical Flying Girl Harem– No thanks.

Shows I'm looking forward to this season:

Kimi ni Todoke Season 2

Kimi wa Zombie Desu Ka?
