My favorite genre of anime is cyberpunk. It combines elements of sci-fi, but the focus is on individual, and his relation to society through the prism of technology. That's why Ghost in the Shell ranked top three positions.
I also enjoy psychological and horror animes like Gantz and Elfen Lied, which I highly recommend, but not for the faint hearted.
