My Favourite Anime

1 Penguindrum

TBH, everything Ikuhara directed (Yuri Kuma Arashi, Utena and this) could be here - I love them all. I only picked Penguindrum over the other two because I've seen it more times.

All three are ritch in symbolsim, have great characters that are flawed and fuck up and deal with themes anime often doesn't wanna touch.

2 Yuri!!! on Ice
Yuri!!! on Ice

Taught me what it feels like to feel joy again in my icy icy heart.

3 Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

both seasons

4 Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

The one Gundam that avoids the inherent hypocricy of being an anti-war show that also needs to have many very exciting mecha fight scenes to sell you toys. That ending is like a punch in the gut.

Also I really love tragedy. I'm pretty sure a good half of this list is flawed characters ruining their own life.

Do I even need to explain this one?

13 Black Jack OVA
Black Jack OVA

Black Jack is a great character, and this OVA really gets it, despite being mostly original stories (or very loosely based on the manga anyway), not going into his backstory or motivation and adding the Bond girl element that wasn't there in the manga.

Also surgery scenes. The one Black Jack anime that doesn't skimp on those.

14 Attack on Titan

It managed to make me feel sad for a piece of paper. Kudos for that.

17 Patlabor 2: The Movie
Patlabor 2: The Movie

Mamoru Oshii is boss. The appeal of this movie can be summed up with this one scene.

(A part of it copy pasted in case Youtube deletes it:

I share your revultion about just wars! If there ever was such a thing it was the war against the nazis! Our allies, Goto, our allies! But how many millions throughout history have died in the cause of what their lying leaders called 'just wars'? In the end it seems to me that the line between a just war and an unjust peace is very faint indeed. If the just war is a lie, is the unjust peace less of a lie? We are told there is peace, but we look around us and even if we can not give it words our eyes tell us we can not believe what we are being told. In the end every war gives a way to peace, so called. And every so called peace is the dorment seed of war... So it's only a matter of time till the hard reality of war sweeps away our illusion that the absence of war is peace. So I ask you agin: What are we working to protect? We enjoy peace on our TV screens, while just outside the camerashot the war is rageing. We forget we're just a camera angle behind the battle lines. no, we don't forget... We quite simply refuse to remember. That can not go on! Sometime, somehow, we will be punished!)

18 Sword of the Stranger
Sword of the Stranger

Best action scenes ever. Rewatch it often just for those, even if the plot is meh.

19 Gundam Build Fighters

Obligatory guilty pleasure.
