Texhnolyze

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Gilgamesh

Both Texhnolyze and Gilgamesh have the same kind of dark atmosphere in them. In both the characters are drawn to be slightly "ugly", or perhaps more human, and there is the future world where everything has somehow gone wrong, so wrong that the tired people are just about to lose the little hope they have.Gilgamesh isn't quite as dark as Texhnolyze, neither it is I daresay as intelligent. With superhumans and all Gilgamesh is a bit like a mild version of Texhnolyze: not quite as dark, depressing or mindteasing, but not nearly as good either.

Texhnolyze

Witch Hunter Robin is a dark anime and Texnolyze is even darker. The colours and animation are also similar. Neither really has humor, but there is some depht with the characters, and there is a feel of something real in both of these. As a warning, even though I highly recommend Texnolyze to any With Hunter Robin fans: Texhnolyze is heavy, dark, and twists your brains out. Really. But that's what we love, right?

Berserk

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Gungrave

There are plenty of similarities connecting these two fine series, Gungrave and Berserk. The main characters of both are remarkably similar, altough their silences and attitudes to fighting (which is important part of each of their lives) differ somewhat. Also, both Gungrave and Berserk are stories of friendship between two men (and adult men at that, no kiddies running around and acting like heroes in these series. Which is great, I tire of always watching highschool kids steal the show). Animations are not identical, but similar in, for axample, that aspect that everything is somehow made to look quite real. Not realistic, exactly, but there is dirt ja no fancy bright-coloured costumes anywhere (excluding a slip or two into that in the latter half of Gungrave). Still, both are far from being glossy, altough they do look good. All said, these two are excellent animes and if you haven't seen either, go and watch now.

Perfect Blue

The world outside your window is dark...and watching it you suddenly realize that you can't truly tell apart the world in your head and the one that is said to be real. This is the feeling a watcher can find in both Lain and Perfect Blue. Never ceasing suspect in the back of your mind that someone is deceiving you, that the truths you have gained knowledge of are false. I must say I didn't personally like Perfect Blue as much as Lain, it felt like Perfect Blue was trying a little bit too much. Still, they are both good, Lain excellent actually, and have too much likeness not to recommend one to another.

.hack//SIGN

It is clear that there are many similarities in the animes of the same studio. Still, it doesn't change the fact that these two have a lot in common. There are the gorgeous musics and similar animation style of course. Also the colours used resemble eachother. If not talking about the technical details, the one similar thing is the way both of these stories take their time. Both stories are original enough, though admittedly different. Still, the way either of them gives anything ready-on-plate to the watcher is quite enjoyable.

FLCL

Paranoia Agent

It's always hard to recommend either of these series to anything: they both are too original. Still, in both of these series you can find something rare and always as delightful: sunny, nice and at the same time very intelligent anime. FLCL and Paranoia Agent both have their share of humor and they both have limitless layers one can interpret the way one wants to. In that aspect Paranoia Agent is a bit easier to follow though, it explains a lot more than FLCL.

.hack//SIGN

.hack//SIGN and Lain are both so called "intelligent" series; that is in both of these you get to use your brain and enjoy an original story. Though it may not seem so in the beginning, the worlds and themes of these animes have many common points, like the difference between virtual and real and the idea that everyone always builds their worlds in their head and so every world is virtual. And by the world that defines us and us that defines us the essence of "me" is also pondered. .hack//SIGN is slower and much lighter in animation and mood, but if you liked one the other might be well worth a try, at least.

Shadow Star Narutaru

Paranoia Agent

Now, there aren't too many of animes like these two around. I love how in both of these the colour themes are happy enough, how the characters are likeable and fun and how both of these still clearly belong to the group of "intelligent animes". Lain is not the only way to make an anime that provoces some brain cells, though it sometimes does seem like most of the viewers and the studios think so. I'm not saying that neither of these doesn't have its darker moments (especially Narutaru), but one gets to see something else than the usual shades of black for a change. And gets a laugh at times.

Trigun

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Hellsing

Well, there is, for one, the remarkable similarity in animation that connect these two series. And both have the same strange mixture of humor and seriousness. The main characters of Hellsing and Trigun are both one-of-their-kind great suberb thingies, that are in reality looking for someone as good as them to duel with. And they are cool, I loved Vash's high moral as much as I loved Alucard's immorality. One thing that increases the coolness and similarity of these caracters is the age, they both look young but have a lifespan of centuries as their curse (or blessing?).

Noir

Firstly, I must say I didn't much like Kite, it was a bit too hentai. You won't find that in Noir and this isn't the only difference between the series. Still, in both of them, the killing is beautiful. The animation is different, but great in both. Noir and Kite tell of people that has grown to live a bit outside the society and their attemps to feel like normal human beings can sometimes make your heart ache. The themes behind the story are similar, but the atmosphere is not.

Witch Hunter Robin

These two series seem to begin in the same kind of situation, but they develope in different ways. Still the same themes remain, like the question of what is the difference between the hunter and the hunted. They both also have their own version of the imaginary today world, not only a normal world where the magic is suddenly found. Oh, and then there is the dark atmosphere and colours, of course.

Ayashi no Ceres

Angel Sanctuary

I'm not really sure if I should recommend these two series together as I, to be honest, loved Ceres but didn't much care for Angel Sanctuary. Still they are similar in many ways and my dislike might only be because of the stronger incest theme of Angel Sanctuary. The animation of these animes resembles each other, also the setting of mystery, magic and love in the ordinary today's Japan. Both animes are greatly stories of fighting against one's destiny.

FLCL

Looking from one point of view FLCL can in my opinion be seen as a kind of parody of NGE. From another point it is very brainmelting, funny and strange and certainly very different from the NGE. Still, because of the link this seems to have to NGE you might find it worth to watch. I liked them both, but then again I like many different kinds of series that have naught to do with each other at all ^_^

Shadow Star Narutaru

These two surprised me in the same pleasant way (as I while watching NGE was still so n00b that i didn't know what it was about...) The both seem to be quite harmless, done in quite classical way, until: hail the weirdness! The pleasant mysteriousness, originality...and above all, the sudden need for viewer to use his/her brains.

Lunar Legend Tsukihime

Hitsuji no Uta

Shingetsutan Tsukihime and Hitsuji no Uta are both beautiful quiet animes. They are both a bit dark, but not depressingly distressinly so. Neither of these awake any great feelings and the plots are quite simple, so unlike many a bit darker anime neither of these require any great brain-efforts. Which is sometimes fine, I'm not saying every anime should be like Lain.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and Kenshin - Reminicense are beautifully drawn darkly romantic stories with a convenient amount of great looking action blended in. Plus they both have a tragic and legendaric main character with a dark past...enough to steal a heart of any anime fangirl ^__^

Escaflowne

Though there are many similarities in the storylines, Vision of Escaflowne and Fushigi Yuugi aren't necessarily an obvious pair. The atmosphere in Fushigi Yuugi is quite different to Escaflowne's as are the characters. Still, there is much same in animation and themes, so even if it's not certain I WOULD think that a person liking one of these would like the other too.
