Nice D. Gray-Man ava you got there =3
We should make this review thing a habit. At least for worthy or laughable or even terrible animes worth watching.
Today I'll share with you my review of Welcome to the NHK.
I must say: Brilliant characters, all of them really unique and non-cliché, except perhaps the purururururin guy next door. One thing I like is that they're all messed up, immature and failures, even Misaki. One thing I also loved was the fact that it didn't feel like an anime at all during a lot of the time. Felt like some european noir and weird animation making fun of japanese clichés, but it kind of fell for the anime standards somewhere along the way: that's why I had to remove half a star... I know I rated 5 stars some others that had those same anime clichés, but this one started by mocking them and distancing itself from them, but then, it turned out like the thing it was once mocking. The ending didn't feel quite right either. I like the fact that not too much changed but he's still making progress, but all the others' happy endings and his acception of it made it seem... out of character (half star removal supported by this). Animation wise, it was most of time pretty decent, even impressive sometimes but somewhere in the middle it became extremely inferior to what it once was, and then it improved again but never again was it as awesome as I felt is was in the beginning. The comedy however stayed pretty much always top notch and that was the high point of this series. I don't remember laughing out loud as much as this since Seto no Hanayome or Hayate. The music was tailor made for this anime, no doubt about it and I even found myself singing Purururururin in the middle of the street. I basically liked a bit less since the end of the suicidal "arc". The way he got in there was hillarious, but everything after kinda went downhill, story wise. To sum it up was a great experience and, at least the beggining was better than the manga, thanks to all the animation, color, visual and audio aid granted by it being in video and the brilliant staff. (yes, I had already started reading the manga, but only a few chapters. I'll read it in a couple of months). To sum it up, it's a brilliant idea, produced brilliantly at the beginning and pretty decently in the rest of the time, great music and animation and divinal comedy. A must-watch without a doubt and probably the best of the genre I ever saw. And while I think about how much I laughed, I guess I'll give it an enjoyment level extra and give it back that half star. Brilliant is the word of the day and the word for it. Actually it's to good to be true. Must be a conspiracy after all. NHK gets my godly stamp for the amount of fun the first half delivered. So much I feel compeled to forgive the rest. 5/5
I'll have to take a look at it. If you rated them that high, I suppose they can't be bad.
Now, about the other two:
Candy Boy is cute. I can't think of anything else to say, it's extremely cute and heart warming: it's not bad but I can't say it's good either... It's just, cute.
Blue Drop: it has Yuri so that's an instant recommendation, but in a more objective look, it's probably the anime with the most screwed up priority placing I've ever saw. Such moments include (trying to avoid spoilers) a massive end of the world scene followed by impending genocide in which the girls won't leave the school to go for shelter because they're sad since the school festival and play in which they put soooo much hard work is ruined. Or when a huge ship is departing and heading to almost certain death in a brutal battle for the sake of the world's survival and the love interest of the ship's captain is trying to catch up with the ship because she's worried the captain might be sad. That's just the start of it. You figure out the few mysteries that show up before the characters even notice them, their reactions to everything are so lame that it even gets sad and the dramas they face are so stupid, superficial and obnoxious that the only impression and comment towards the characters consistent through out the story is: those stupid obnoxious selfish brats. AND to make things worse, one of the characters is a big fat ugly girl. However, it does have Yuri... for 2 seconds if you consider yuri more than stupid girls' friendship. On a more technical stand point, the production values are pretty decent, the action isn't bad, music is ok and there's a scene when the main character, Mari (the one that I hate the most) is almost strangled to death, so... watch at your own risk.
I finished it, indeed. So let the bashing start:
One thing I really liked about it is that it didn't feel adapted from a manga. It had a pretty original feel, and it actually feels as good and some times even better than the manga (already in vol.6, way ahead of you :P). The animation in the earliest episodes was a lot better than the rest, especially Teresa's "final" scene. And I still Teresa's the best and Claire (or Clare, I don't really care) looked so fugly after kissing Raki and while telling him to live. A bit scary actually... The Gore was one of its best features, although I think it was used a bit too much. It got a bit underrated. And Clare should've stayed with only one arm for a while longer: I didn't even have time to start to care. The art was great and in the manga, it's even better. In sum, it has an incredible amount of potential, just like Priscilla, but in this case, Teresa does chop its head off once in a while (it has some bad moments). The concept itself is actually brilliant but the ending was a huge disappointment, which I hope the manga corrects and makes justice to such a great story. And I do remember you recommended it to me, so thanks man, definitely worth watching and, although not perfect, I'd say it is a must watch.
Claymore - 4.5 stars
I'm forgetting something... OH YEAH! Raki. My hate for him knows no limits and I dream about killing him at night by chopping off his limbs and tongue, blind him and watch him squirm for a few days and just before he loses it, to kill him in the most painful of ways. So...
Claymore - 4.0 stars
