Anime reviews #3 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu and Higurashi no Naku koro ni

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is an anime produced by Kyoto Animation. I will come right out and say it. I have absolutely no idea why Haruhi is so damn popular. It is seriously a mystery to me. It's totally true though, like every single website related to anime (including this one) has something Haruhi-related on it. I think it may be a conspiracy... Don't get me wrong though, this anime is quite enjoyable. The art style is fine, nothing special. The characters are okay too, although the ever present archetypes are alive and well. The plot is...interesting, to say the least. My summary of this anime would be tsudere girl plus man-bitch guy plus big-boobed moeblob and megane girl plus aliens and time-travelling and cosplay and school life. This anime is perfectly adequate, and important to watch for those who aspire to be well versed in anime/otaku culture. This being said, I think that the popularity is sort of undeserved, there are plenty of much better anime out there. The biggest thing bugging me about Haruhi is how I HAVE NO IDEA WHY EVERYBODY LIKES IT. (It's a government conspiracy)

Higurashi no Naku koro ni

I'm going to do two reviews here.

Higurashi no naku is produced by Studio Deen (which generally does pretty mediocre work). I surprisingly enough actually really liked this anime. The reasons for liking it lie pretty much wholly on the plot and characters. This is because despite the good story and such, the art is pretty atrocious; this is pretty much Higurashi's only drawback. The plot is horror/drama/mystery/demon stuff; especially in the first season. Since I enjoying indulging in good horror every once and a while, Higurashi turned out to be just my thing. It must be warned though that the drama and horror stuff can get pretty intense at time, especially because a lot of it is emphasized by paranoia. Some of the killing scenes are really quite gruesome too. To top it off, this I have often seen this anime be called "the psycho loli killer anime", which does speak some truth, as many of the characters are quite loli-esk and said lolis either kill other characters or are themselves killed or kill other lolis. (People who like their lolis innocent might not enjoy this). The way the anime flows is rather strange though, as in the first season whenever a story arc is completed the world resets, with no explaination (until that second season). This anime does have two seasons, plus some OVAs. I liked both pretty equally, if not the second season a bit more. The first season focuses on characters killing other characters while the second focuses more on the characters "trying to change their fate". I found the second season was actually really powerful and sad. It changed my view of the anime from being that which was just gory to one that was almost profoundly sad. I would highly recommend this anime to anyone who has a stomach for horror stuff and likes unique plots.
