Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

BASED ON 25 OF 25 EPS WATCHED
8 APR
2011

Story: The story follows Lelouch Lamperouge, a teenage schoolboy that lives in Japan, which is now known as Area 11 after the Holy Britannian Empire, the dominant empire that rules almost 1/3 of the world, took it over after a short destructive war. It was because of this war that a young Lelouch declared that he would destroy Britannia to his friend Suzaku Kururugi. The story picks up after Lelouch discovered a girl in a ball that Suzaku, now part of the military, and the Britannian Military, except a secret force under Prince Clovis la Britannia, the third prince of Britannia and viceroy of Area 11, think is full of toxic gas. It is this girl that gives him the power of the kings, the power Geass, that allows Lelouch to escape certain death at the hands of this secret force.  With this power, Lelouch can follow down the path to his ultimate goal, to over throw Britannia. Though even with his power, Lelouch finds himself having to gain the support of a rebellion group in Area 11 as Zero, the man that will change the world. With trying to keep his normal life as a student and his sister Nunnally, who he wants more than ever to live in a world that will not look down upon her, away from his movements as Zero, it leads to a whole lot of sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, most of the time entertaining adventures.

Characters: The characters of Code Geass all have their own personal vendettas that makes the story well written but possibly not to original. Characters like Lelouch and Suzaku, main characters that allow us to see two sides of the story. Nunnally Lamperouge the sister of Lelouch, her eyes were permentaly closed and she is unable walk after a traumatic event involving the tragic death of their mother. She is one of the main reasons behind Lelouch’s motives to over throw Britannia. Kallen Stadtfeld is one of those in the rebellion, who is actually part Britannian, which she uses to go to school at Ashford Academy, is one of the main characters in the rebellion along with Kaname Ohgi. This rebellion uses machines called Knightmare frames, a mecha. The creators of these Knightmares are the Holy Britannian Empire that used them to take over Japan, as stated before, but is has continued to update thanks to their scientist like Lloyd Asplund. Their current highest Knightmare frame is 7, a experimental Knightmare frame called Lancelot, which is piloted by Suzaku. Along with the rebellion there is what they are fighting against, as spoken of before the Holy Britannia Empire. In Area 11 the viceroy, which was held by Prince Clovis at the beginning, but after an unfortunate circumstance with Zero, was passed to another member of the Royalty, Princess Euphemia li  Britannia, the third princess of the Holy Britannian Empire, who was helped guided by her sister Princess Cornelia li Britannia, the second princess of Britannia. The story also involves certain characters from the school, Ashford Academy, mostly from the student council. Milly Ashford, The school president, Rivalz Cardemonde, a close friend to Lelouch, Shirley Fenette, who has a secret love for Lelouch, and Nina Einstein, who is quiet but brilliant. There are of course many other characters that will play minor roles in the storyline.

Music: The music for the openings and endings were well done. The openings do their jobs in getting you pumped up to watch the episode, and the ending also does their jobs in letting you know, and have that feeling, that the episode is over. With that said, there is the normal background soundtrack that makes moments in the episode more powerful.

Artwork: The artwork is awesome. It is done by two of my favorite studios Sunrise, and CLAMP. From the backgrounds, to the battle scenes, to even the character models, were all well done and look awesome.

Ending: Without spoiling anything, the ending to R1 is tragic, and yet leaves on a cliffhanger, making it a tough wait to watch the next season. This makes the ending perfectly done.

This is a bland explanation of the story and some of the characters. But I do not want to spoil anything, and hopefully this explanation will help you decide to watch this series for the first time, or if you have already watched it, to watch it again.

This series gets the Zer0 Pendragon shield of approval.
