2. ULTIMATE ANIME RANKING

Includes some anime I've dropped, but overall I try to only include anime that I feel I can give a "fair" rating. Reasons are a work in progress.
1 Spirited Away
Spirited Away

Every time I go back to watch it I love it more, and I've seen it at least 10 times.

2 Kimi no Na wa.
Kimi no Na wa.

Makoto Shinkai's masterwork that combines the best of his entire repertoire. It lives up to the hype.

3 Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop

Everything you could ever want in an anime from science fiction to comedy to drama. Something for everyone to enjoy.

4 Clannad After Story
Clannad After Story

Haters gonna hate the ending, but this is an anime that reflects my life values while providing incredible entertainment in all aspects of its production.

5 Steins;Gate
Steins;Gate

Amazing characters and a rivetting story. Some of my favorite character designs of all time from any work of fiction.

A heartbreaking tragedy that you can only watch every so often because otherwise its just plain depressing.

8 The Anthem of the Heart
The Anthem of the Heart

Slice of life at its finest, showcasing some of the best character animation ever and music that pulls at your heartstrings.

9 The Wind Rises
The Wind Rises

Miyazaki's swan song (until he unretires again) that showcases the real life of an engineer and manages to make it one of the most entertaing movies of the decade.

10 Wolf Children
Wolf Children

Another values oriented movie that shows the strength of single motherhood and the struggles of finding where you belong.

11 Monogatari Series: Second Season
Monogatari Series: Second Season

The best arcs in the Monogatari franchise that feature one of the best villains in anime.

12 Toradora!
Toradora!

The anime that almost killed the slice of life genre because no anime could live up to its standards.

13 Sakamichi no Apollon
Sakamichi no Apollon

Yoko Kano of Cowboy BeBop fame returns to her jazz roots with the music of this coming of age story. Easily the best music anime of all time.

14 The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

The best adaptation of the best story from the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise. Don't worry that there's no sequel to this movie; you didn't miss much.

15 Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist

A classic that's been overshadowed by the more recent 'Brotherhood' adaptation, but still excellent in its own right.

16 Durarara!!x2 Shou
Durarara!!x2 Shou

A character anime that cannot be described in a few sentences without failing to do it justice. Just watch it.

An anime that personally spoke to me as a classical musician while delivering some of the best animated music performance scenes of all time.

One of the definitive works on otaku culture and hikikomori that also manages to entertain with great characters and story.

20 Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Movie 2: Eien no Monogatari
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Movie 2: Eien no Monogatari

The deconstructive magical girl franchise flows better as a series of movies rather than a television series. The third movie, which features a new original story, isn't included in this.

Could have been as good as Wolf Children had it not been for the insane ending.

It finally came out and it's completely worth it. Can't wait for the other parts.

The Monogatari franchise's character development is unparalleled in that they made Kanbaru one of my all time favorite characters.

Possibly the most underrated Studio Ghibli movie of all time.

26 Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Destroyed any chance of a played straight magical girl anime ever being made.

27 Voices of a Distant Star

The best thing anyone's ever made on a Mac by themselves.

28 5 Centimeters per Second

Just the first part would be in contention for the best movie ever. The other two parts dragged it down quite a bit.

29 When Marnie Was There

One of Studio Ghibli's more underrated works, it's another coming of age story with great character designs and simple animation.

30 Aria the Avvenire

The Aria anime we deserved, but didn't receive enough of.

The movie adaptation of the best arc of Nanoha which flows much better than the TV version and has better production value.
